There is a group of subreddit hate groups operators who popularized “power mod” as an idea, to motivate harassment of delegated mods (for instance, a mod who put together CSS for thousands of subreddits). It helped deflect attention from the fact that a group of them controlled hundreds of subreddits orbiting coontown and cringeanarchy. They never got named as “power mods”, for some reason
With the implementation of the Moderator Code of Conduct, Reddit, Inc. made it clear that entire operator teams could be held accountable for the policies and actions put in place by one subreddit operator.
That's the explicit expectation: Mod teams that blacked out subreddits or otherwise contributed to attempts to break reddit — they are to blame.
There were cases of mod team members communicating to reddit admins that they disagreed with the actions of head operators; those still have mod privileges and are still operating subreddits, for the most part.
Some just walked away from operating / moderating one or more subreddits.

Volunteers who soak up the brunt of abuse from running communities on a website that explicitly invited violent neonazis and male feminists to operate on the site … then their cow tools are broken by the same site, after doing a 90% job on ejecting the violent neonazis …

Powermod is a very real term. It describes mods who engage in "competitive subreddit accumulation."
There is a groomercord site for jannies with a bot that you type in a command and the bot can sum the subscriber totals of all the subreddita where you are a moderator. So if you are a moderator at three places that have 10M subscribers, the sum will tell you 30M.
They call this their "e-peen" score.

I think I can sort of answer this one. Luke's like 19 years old, and I'm also 19 years old. I picked up modding as a hobby when I was 13, and was actively modding for almost a year until I got bored with it, and now I just mod occasionally. The difference between Luke and basically every other teenager mod (yeah, there's a lot of mods who are teenagers) is that most get sick of modding after doing it for a year or two. I guess he's still not burnt out after all this time. That's also why those three bots in that list are his, and since he happened to be the one that made those bots that lots of other mods need, he got added to a bunch of subs.
You've just never heard of him because he's just a chill dude who never gets into drama.

reddit says he mods 40 subreddit, but almost all of them are random ten subscriber communities that effectively tantamount to domain squatting.
he mods just three subreddit that get more than one post per day (/r/fuckthealtright, /r/contrapoints, and surprisingly enough /r/thecure). even ahs is pretty much dead at this point.
for someone who dedicated his entire life to this website, he controls a surprisingly small amount of subs. his communities probably generate less than 1% of the engagement someone like merari has.

Closing the SITE for a DDOS wasn't OK. (
I totally realize most people are going to disagree with me here but I feel compelled to say that closing the site for a simple ddos wasn't a very kind thing to do. We have seen TONS of posts from vulnerable populations talking about how this site is a source of support and humor in a dark time. Irony and dirtbagism aside, taking away that support without warning was not okay.
You can say I'm being silly, or humorless or reactionary. Whatever. I love the show and I love this community. But sometimes I come home after dealing with ableism and our nightmare reality all day, and this sub is one of many things that make me feel better. It wasn't a good feeling to find this sub closed for the sake of irony. Maybe that's laughable or pathetic. But for me, it's true.
