We live in the most restrained and peaceful time in human history, where violence is unknown to the largest share of human population as there ever was throughout history. The fact that we have people advocate against violence against animals or eating them is proof of how luxurious and removed from violence we are.

I can't "prove" it, but I think that communities like old-school r/me_irl created a sort of "memetic depression" - longterm feelings of dissatisfaction that were not caused by a chemical imbalance but rather by continual reinforcement of depressing ideas and encouraging acting out depressing behaviors. I am not a psychologist, and I pulled everything I just said out of my butt, but it kind of makes sense.

If that is the case for things that are physical sensations, what about things that exist (mostly) outside of the physical realm, like emotions? I think that telling someone that they are depressed can be a placebo that causes them to have the experience of being depressed.

For another thing, as anyone that has talked with a depressed person knows (or have been depressed), depression changes the way you perceive the world into something often completely disconnected with actual reality. Another thing that we know is that having a group of people assert something increases our likelihood to believe it, even if it is clearly false. Combining those two facts, if you have a large group of people asserting incorrect things about reality, they are going to further transmit those incorrect beliefs to others in the fold.
