COVID rarely spreads in minor passing interactions with strangers, regardless of masking. These are the times when people most often wear masks.
COVID commonly spreads through prolonged contact with friends/family, where masks either would not or could not be worn. Even if you're a grade A coofshitter you still take off your mask to eat, and spending a lot of time around a sick person poses risks with or without masks.
To the extent that infection in public places is a risk, people who believe masks and other safety theater reduce transmission are likely to go out more, and expose themselves to potential infection more. This could reduce or even reverse the statistical benefits of masks.
It makes some sense for workers who spend all day around each other to wear them, but this really should not have been such a big focus for so long.
