The tipping question splits the antiwork subreddit in two. "If you can’t afford to tip. Stay home. You’re too poor to go out." :usa: :gigachad:

https://old.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/r4khw5/if_you_dont_tip_youre_a_piece_of_shit_and_are?sort=controversial

What about at McDonalds? How much should I tip for a $5 meal?

Wait, you guys haven't been tipping your McDonalds drive-thru cashier 15%?

please explain why Ineed to voluntarily give my hard earned wages to someone else who chooses to remain in this profession?

:marseyhmm:

Tipped workers are the ones holding back wages because they can make much more as tipped workers. And why should the waiter who carries the food to you get 20% of the total, while the cook who prepared the food and the dishwasher who washes the plates and the cleaner who cleaned the place get 0%? This is just ridiculous entitlement.

Yep, thanks guy - there's a reason servers don't fight harder for eliminating tipping. Most days they can barely put in an order correctly, why did anyone ever expect class solidarity?

RIP antiwork

I don't tip, not because of some "hurr employers should pay a living wage" nonsense, but because I just don't like waitresses and want to make their day worse

Jump in the discussion.

Every server expects a small percentage of tables to not tip; it’s not an effective way to make their day worse alone. What you should do:

  • make multiple requests for things, but explicitly not use them. Ask for extra silverware, but leave it obviously untouched.

  • Order a glass of ice along with another drink, let the ice fully melt in full view.

  • Go near the kitchen door, loudly request that you get some service, but get back to the table before they figure out whether you were the one that said it.

  • if the manager walks by, ask them loudly “is our server new?” Don’t worry, the server will hear you.

  • do tip, but make it like $2. The purposeful tiny amount hurts more than none at all.

t. Waited tables at an Outback for a summer. It was a fun job tbh

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

  • When ordering, mumble incomprehensibly. When the server goes “Huh?” and tries to ask for clarification, keep cutting them off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing your hand shut in front of their face.

  • Try to walk out without paying the bill, pretend to be tired and not hear the server calling after you.

  • Keep loudly yawning when the server lists the bill.

  • Ask for a separate bill for every item “to prevent any electrical infetterence" when paying by card.

I met a guy who would wait tables for about 6 months per year at a very upscale restaurant in a tourist destination, clear $75k+ in tips and then spend the rest of the year doing nothing.

There's no point to this story I just want any waitcels who read this to know they're doing it wrong.

I knew a dude who worked in a marina on rich people's yachts. He said it was pretty great, you just fricked around for the 90% of the time the boat wasn't being used. Apparently the richer they were, the higher the chance 1 week into a 4 week vacation the dude would get called back and then you had even less work to do. That being said the engineer-cells who worked on the boats had shit lifes cause salt water is a b-word to anything mechanical or electrical.

Where's the lie?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Not a lie but mostly inaccurate. Servers take the order and deal with all customer service related issues. They get paid minimum wage plus gratuity. At the end of their shift, they tip out the bartender, barbacks, and busboys 10-20% of their earnings. The cook staff typically make at least $5 more an hour over minimum wage and are usually the workers doing full 8 hour shifts instead of the typical 4-hour shifts that servers and bartenders typically do. I've bartended and know people running restaurants and they have a hard time finding kitchen staff while offering $20 an hour plus $1-$2k signing bonus.

Here's the thing with tipping. If you want McDonald's style customer service then never tip because that's what you'll eventually get.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I’ve done neither, but waiting tables and dealing with angry customers has to be a lot worse and has to require less autism than standing in place and washing dishes.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

How exactly does perpetuating low wages via tipping solve any "problems?" Post just reeks of grindmaxx shilling from a mcwagie so I respect it.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I work as a line chef and the amount of servers that are brain dead is astronomically high.

Almost every single day I have an order for a table that has a shrimp allergy and they neglect to let me know until the order has been waiting for pickup about 30-40 minutes later and they've only now realized they didn't ring their order in correctly and they now want it expedited infront of the 6 other tickets that have popped up since i've completed their own.

Servers deserve the wage they get. They're slaves. They're lucky they even get paid.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Line cooks are either

A.) Too r-slurred to be an actual chef

Or

B.) Too socially r-slurred to make more than 12 an hour on the other side of the window.

Tips are a way of enforcing certain standards of behavior when the employee cannot be effectively monitored otherwise (unlike say in a factory where the employees can be easily watched). It’s really not that big of a deal and I hate when people argue it’s “subsidizing the restaurant”. Like your food bill wouldn’t go up (and service probably suffer) if they made a guaranteed $XX/hr?
