I haven't really thought much about the economics of scalping, but I am now and I have to admit that scalpers literally are doing nothing wrong, and potentially improve prices for people with good impulse control. The fact that people are willing to pay absurd amounts of money for something implies that it's actual value is absurdly high. The people that buy the product are essentially paying for getting the product soon.

Once the novelty of having the product early dies, the scalpers are forced to sell the product for below the asking price, because who would buy from a scalper when they could buy directly from the source, unless it is cheaper?

For example, if I am a scalper, and I buy 100 nintendo switches for 300 dollars each, and then sell 50 for 700 each, I have made a $5000.00 profit by selling only half of my inventory. Then (let's simplify the example) if all of the "early buyers" are exhausted, I am left with only "thrifty buys", so I must sell for a reasonable price of $250.00. So, thrifty buyers get a $50.00 discount for waiting.

Naturally the "muh late stage capitalism" crowd will ask what do scalpers offer, because they aren't doing any sort of labor. The answer is that they are taking a huge risk that they will lose their money. In the previous example, imagine that there are only 30 "early buyers". This translates into a $9000 loss! Therefore, being a scalper is basically the same as being a day trader.

The real question people should be asking is, why are there morons willing to pay 200%+ upcharge for early access to a nintendo switch? The answer, as always, is the soys. Which is even more reason to be pro-scalping.

Scalpers don't inflate prices. People decide what that the item is worth to them. MSRP doesn't mean shit. If people want to pay more, then they will. Everyone who's upset at scalpers is just butthurt that they suddenly have to compete with other buyers on price. Though shit. You're not entitled to a lower price just because you want one.
