You are partially correct. It can be interpreted that way but krishna is specifically talking about the warriors on the battlefield being destroyed.
BG 11.32: The Supreme Lord said: I am mighty Time, the source of destruction that comes forth to annihilate the worlds. Even without your participation, the warriors arrayed in the opposing army shall cease to exist.

This translation is pretty good, except for "expert archer" The word used is savya-sΔchin which means ambidextrous (shoot arrows with both arms.

It's a contentious topic. There definitely was a Bharata clan in North India and there probably was a civil war. How much of the war was interpolated into legend and how much is accurate history depends on who you ask. It doesn't really matter imo. The gita is classified as a yoga shastra(philosophical treatise on yoga). Krishna himself is refered to as yogeshvara-Lord of yoga.
BG 11.9: Sanjay said: O King, having spoken thus, the Supreme Lord of Yoga, Shree Krishna, displayed his divine and opulent form to Arjun.
As such most people are interested in the philosophical aspect of the text rather than the historical veracity.

Its quiet odd how close to original the non Hindi IE languages are. Especially Bengali or one of the fringe languages, ours should have been influenced by the SEA languages if we have partially SEA genetics. For 1500+ years almost all our languages developed in relative isolation. Even Assamese is peculiarly IE, for how non IE their population is. Why are bimarus so content with speaking farsi?
