/r/RedditAlternatives User Tries Going to rDrama.net and is Outraged :marseytroll:

Someone recently made a thread on /r/RedditAlternatives titled "I tried browsing rdrama after seeing it sub banner" [sic]:

https://old.reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives/comments/1fgkkog/i_tried_browsing_rdrama_after_seeing_it_sub_banner/

Wall to Wall Nazis spewing the most vile antisemitism, incels openly advocating for "white women extinction" and routine stalking and harassing of trans women redditors. Plus the usual fire and CSAM you would expect to find on a site infestedwith these types. Don't ever go there.

The replies:

Post poop there. Be the change.

That's what I remember as well

This is what happened after one of reddit's mass-bans. The community came up with some catchy name for this particular one, which I forgot. But its when they hired Ellen Pao to come in and be a scapegoat for white washing reddit. She came in, preached all this "safe space" bullshit. Changed the rules. Banned a ton of people. Then left, taking all the community hate with her. Yes, reddit became more appealing for advertisers. But in this same move, the content quality went to absolute shit. Because controversy breeds uniqueness and new ideas. This was the beginning of the attitude that you get reported and banned on reddit for telling someone they are wrong about something in a slightly assertive tone.

Voat was the big reddit alt at the time. It was AMAZING. Straight up was 2008 reddit in terms of content quality and meaningful discussion. All the quality content people from reddit had already left and were existing very happily on Voat.

Unfortunately the reddit bans kicked all the hate groups off of reddit. Reddit was big enough that these people were diluted to a very manageable and functional level with the rest of the community. But, when they went to the smaller reddit clones, like Voat and rdrama, they totally overwhelmed those communities.

The content on Voat disintegrated almost over night. Their site traffic went up by an order of magnitude. The owners/admins were overwhelmed. They servers were overwhelmed. The site crashed for like two weeks. When it got restored, the buttholes far outnumbered the nice people there and the site became unusable for anyone else. It was like a tactical nuke went off.

I dont think Reddit had the forsight that their sterilization efforts would cripple competitors, because Reddits admins typically dont have any foresight, but that was the accidental effect of that action. Seems to be reddits core business model: Do stupid things and get lucky, but somehow still remain totally unprofitable.

I was pretty heart broken because Reddit has been a shit hole for a long time. I was pretty unhappy with the site, but just like today, there were no alternative. Voat was amazing and Im grateful I got to enjoy it for 6 months in its prime before reddit killed it.

But yeah. The rest of the internet is still struggling with this same issue. Reddit sucks. Its model sucks. The admins suck. The mods suck. It gets noticeably worse about once/year, usually in July. Being publicly traded now means reddit is going to continue to get worse faster.

But any emerging competitor is going to be inundated with alt-right weirdos that cant be on reddit anymore, making the barrier to entry for new player insurmountably high.

This is just another chapter in how the beauty and fun of the internet has completely died in the last 15 years.

Daily reminder: just like how the :marseytrain: imagery on this site keeps out alt-right refugees, the no-no words on this site keep out Reddit soyboy refugees as well. Our refugee defense systems are working exactly as intended. :pepecheers::feelsgoodman:

Also, who the frick is posting CSAM on here? You better not be. :marseypedosnipe:

Anyways...
