Journos have been seething about even the lukewarm spin on the binary gendered magic system since the first episode. I don’t have time to explain why none of this shit works but Jordan put together a 4.4 million word series of novels explaining the metaphysics of it. Derail yourself freak.

Do they seriously think that logically the nature of magic would work by gender and not s*x? Cause that would be pretty darn r-slurred, lol

In Amazon's WoT, Rand's answer from the Aelfinn as to how he can avoid going mad from touching saidin was to use different pronouns.

Easy fix for fantasy is always gendered souls or spirits or some such. It's technically truscum, but if you're writing it you can slink around it by having no one self ID in conflict with their soul.

Still r-slurred. And bleeds into another round of "being a train is a lot like this completely contrived fictional situation, and that strengthens its legitimacy because I am neurodivergent."

This is actually canon, Aran’gar gets reincarnated as a joke into a beautiful woman and becomes a mega slut and infiltrates Salidar because none of them can detect moid channeling.

The biggest travesty is having a fantasy series without a single hot foid to waifu over. Gone Girl was hot in her day, but clearly that day has passed. The rest of them look like they should be changing sheets at a Motel Six. It just won't do.

I refuse to learn about any of this because it would require me to be a tremendous homosexual but I believe the original material has a very binary source of magic such that your bussy is indeed distinct from a gussy. Imagine the shock when trains find this unacceptable.

I've read the books, so I can give you some quotes of the article and quips to skim through. Warning though, long article means long comment incoming.

Subtitle: The show’s One Power works differently than in Robert Jordan’s books

Whelp, there goes the entire premise of the 14 novel series being portrayed even semi-accurately in the show.

it is erasing some of the problematic gender stereotypes of the source material.

Were there stereotypes in the books? Oh god yes, and it's great fun to poke at and laugh about them. Are the stereotypes problematic? No, because this isn't real life. THEY'RE FANTASY NOVELS FOR ENTERTAINMENT, YOU FRICKING :marseybrainlet: emoji

Some people have the ability to touch the True Source, to channel the One Power and use it to perform miraculous feats. <snip> the two halves are divided into a strict gender binary, with saidin being the male half and saidar being the female half.

Again, the premise of the entire fantasy world RJ wrote. The One Power is different for men and women, but functions like yin-yang. Deliberately separate, while balanced and complementary. Men and women can work together with the One Power in very specific ways, but are intentionally independent otherwise.

Binary is the point. But oh no, it's "problematic" for Xe. Write your own 14 book series then, something so epic that millions of fans tickle daddy Bezos' bussy into funding a TV show later.

Several paragraphs crying about how women are written as weak/submissive and men are written as stoic/unfeeling, and then contradicting Xeself by explaining how the characters are actually complex and break out of gender roles as they grow and develop

Too many words-words-words. So what's the problem then? Here's an example ...

Rand, meanwhile, is shown to be loving, gentle, and kind β€” more traits that are too often denied to male characters. This tracks with the Rand in the books, but as his story progresses, the focus of the narrative seems to be solely on the burden of manhood and male leadership.

The author is so far up their own butt, it's not surprising they missed this ... Rand (the main character) wasn't struggling with being a man/male. He was struggling with the fear that he would literally destroy the world and everyone/everything he loves, and that he had no purpose or free will due to being a pawn of the Wheel Of Time.

Reincarnation is a fact in the novels, but since the gender binary is literally written into the elemental forces of the universe, it is perhaps unsurprising that souls are said to have immutable genders that do not change from incarnation to incarnation.

Again, someone's been sniffing their own farts so much that they forgot there were characters who were reincarnated as the opposite s*x (a couple of the Forsaken/villains, I can't remember their names offhand and I'm not going to bother Googling it).

only Rand, Mat, and Perrin have the ability to be Lews Therin reincarnated, or what they call β€œthe Dragon Reborn.” Egwene and Nynaeve are never contenders <snip> like all three of the boys are. In a series in which only women can use magic, and do much, if not most, of the heroic work, they are never as symbolically significant as the male protagonists.

Why would Xe consider the women who do magic and heroic work as not symbolically significant? They had actual tangible significance in numerous ways, hence being primary characters behind the main (Rand).

The fact that only the male half of the Power is tainted becomes more interesting when the Dragon might be reborn as a girl β€” it would be much easier for the forces of the Light if Egwene or Nynaeve turned out to be the next savior of mankind knowing that the Dragon could have been a girl changes the universe in fundamental ways.

OK, so female power... I get it now! You're just changing the story in favor of foids rising up victorious against the patriarchy.

There is little room in such a narrative for same-gender love, just as there is little room to allow truly brilliant characters to escape the constraints of heteronormativity and gender stereotypes.

Oh here we go, better add some totally unnecessary and tokenized representation of LGBTQWTFALPHABET to appeal to other NPCs.

it has embraced a broader worldview, one that makes space for every type of person. They are not inherently limited by their gender, or their sexuality, or whether they can touch the True Source. And that is fitting, not only because it reflects our real world

Again, it's a fantasy series. Books. Writing. Imagination. Entertainment. IT'S NOT REAL, you darn smoothbrain.

Fair enough, you gotta be into media dramatics to enjoy this particular fantasy setting. Even in the books, it's an investment into the individual characters along with the story, so not for everyone.

I assume they're going to make the TV show into a CW version of Game Of Thrones, so I'm not watching it until I get really drunk on a long weekend away from work.

Totally agree about the journacide though.

These things aren't some cynical decisions made by suits for profit. These people ARE the creative industry, or at least a sizable part of it, and write and act that shit out of their own beliefs. And if not alphabet people themselves, they're at least "a true ally".

two halves are divided into a strict gender binary, with saidin being the male half and saidar being the female half. This creates a lot of problems for the series, and while Jordan manages to subvert them in places, more often, the narrative falls into the trap of reinforcing tired gender stereotypes

So in this book, gender/s*x matching is the rule like 99+% of the time. How brave of the author and totally unlike real life.

Do you guys ever stop, in your posting frenzies of Bog Liandrin this and Bloody Mole that, to consider that when you harshly criticize the extremely minute casting changes, lore changes, dialogue changes, magic system changes, plot changes, characterization changes, wardrobe changes, and worldbuilding changes, nitpicking here and there, saying "oh, Loial should be huge," or "oh, Moiraine should be smol," or "oh, it makes no sense to have fifty different races in a small backwater Andoran village," or "oh, Rand and Egwene shouldn't have had raunchy s*x," or "oh, the Two Rivers should be more like an idyllic hamlet than Skid Row," or "oh, serious writers don't use iPad Pros to develop major series on," that maybe, just maybe, Rafe might be reading what you're saying? Do you even consider that you might be making him feel bad? He worked hard to make this show a reality. It isn't fair that you people just sit here, smug, saying things like "oh, Whitecloaks should wear armor," or "oh, Perrin shouldn't have had a wife," or "oh, the female cast members should be more attractive than 1/10s," while Rafe may very well be reading what you're writing, and crying.

The fricking army? Are you serious? As somebody who was once in the US military, but got the frick out as soon as possible, let me tell you about how truly evil and depraved the military is. During Basic Training, we were forced to this chant before shooting at the rifle range : "If they're brown, shoot them down!" At the rifle range, we fired at both adult sized targets and child sized targets. Half the targets were painted as being armed, and half the targets we were supposed to shoot at were painted as innocent civilians holding flowers. We were supposed to shoot at any target, regardless of whether it was armed or unarmed, whether it was an adult or a child. The only time in Basic Training we were allowed to watch tv was when the news showed reports of Muslim civilians being "accidentally killed" in air strikes. We were forced to scream "yes!" every time the news mentioned an innocent brown person being killed. As soon as I saw how truly evil and depraved the US military was, I GOT THE FRICK OUT. I went straight to the Drill Sergeants and told them I didn't want to be part of their right wing terrorist organization. I told them that I REFUSED to kill innocent people of color, and take part in unjustified wars of aggression. The Drill Sergeants responded by tying me up and beating my with their machine guns for ten minutes straight. They told me that I wasn't leaving and that if I ever tried to speak up against their hate and bigotry again, they would murder me. I took matters into my own hands, and jumped out the window at night while the Drill sergeants were asleep. This was the second floor, and fortunately I landed in some bushes. I ran the frick away from the base I was at, and have not returned to this day. Every Time any American expresses admiration for the military, I fricking VOMIT. I was in for long enough to see that the US military is a white supremacist terrorist organization, just as bad as Daesh.
