Tens of thousands of Russkies protested openly in opening days of war in Moscow and St Petersburg how many were arrested? Chinese have tons of protests too. Compare with systemic way in which US govt for eg tracked down ones who breached the Capitol. I'm sure Russian police can do something similar in those cities at least, CCTVs everywhere and everyone has facial recognition software by now. Yeah they'll make examples out of some. But others will be allowed to remain. That's whole point of Russia still being a parliamentary democracy. Let opponents of regime have a voice.

The US had major wars against Iraq (twice), Afghanistan, Libya, Serbia, and didn't lock people up for posting sticky notes in supermarkets. They didn't do that either after 9/11.

Iraq for US or Afg for USSR(or US) weren't really major wars, society wasn't mobilized and they never really posed a threat to core state interests. My point isn't that they aren't repressive, like I said they are tyrants, my point is tyrants know well enough to leave average pleb alone cause bothering them too much is how you get guillotined but average pleb lacks guts normally to actually die trying to unseat some central authority over abstract things like liberty. Their brother getting tortured tho is something else. There have been a few regimes that repressive-Stalinist Russia or North Korea but they're exceptions in most dictatorships if you visit you probably won't have much trouble finding locals willing to curse govt off record. That kind of permanent fear isn't good for modern economy I think, prevents maximized consumption.
