I think that put off a lot of non-college men who would otherwise consider voting for them. They certainly didn't want to talk about potentially voting for them with chud coworkers

These voters are economically illiterate, no amount of policy explanation can change that. Personal finance is the furthest they will go, and the average American has awful personal finances.
