You spend any amount of time with them, you can tell some of them apart. But to their raging frothing dismay, it's not the way they want you to see the world.
I can tell you pretty reliably that a person is from Japan, Korea, maybe northern China. As you go down toward the equator they get darker, so you can tell north China apart from south China. But South China I could easily confuse with Vietnam. The Philippines is a bit of an outlier because it's a different kind of people who live there. Like you won't find a pinoy with really squinty eyes like a Chinese.
So all the countries that really hate each other, I can't tell them apart at all. What I can tell is what latitude they're from. The medieval Arabs (I'm using them as an example because this is where I read it, but I think these ideas were common around the Middle East and Europe way back) had a more enlightened view of race than us. They associated certain character traits with latitudes and temperatures. Up in the north (northern Europe, Scandanavia, Russia) people are intellectually dull but hard-working and honest. People in the middle (like the guy writing this) were the perfect balance of everything. People from farther south can't work as hard because of the heat, but they have more magical powers than normal people.

this is literally true, cold climates make you a harder worker and a better person. (Unless it's too cold, then you get autism. Science is still studying why this is) This is the real and only reason Europe was so prosperous compared to Africa and the Middle East, and you can see proof of that in the way the American North is industrious and wealthy and the South is full of lazy inbreds who were so allergic to work they had to import slaves from another continent to do it for them.

And hot climates force people to not work too hard or they'll literally die. I once saw the statistics of the British troops in India in the 1800s. Something like 2% died each year. Probably didn't realize they should have a siesta instead of dying.
