Disney is making a live action remake of beloved cartoon Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and the production has been a mess. The first problem is that there's no reason to make an inferior version of beloved movie, and Disney thought they could make up for this glaring issue by collecting enough woke tokens.
- Disney was afraid to have the dwarves played by dwarves lest they invoke the wrath of Peter Dinklage, leading to very funny casting
- The lead actress, Rachel Ziegler, really hates the original movie because there isn't enough girl boss energy. Disney banned her from doing interviews because people hate her so much.

all the changes this movie is probably gonna make:
- a new boring ballad for the huntsman to sing to "flesh out his character" written by either alan menken or the greatest showman guys
-all the dwarves get love interests of a group of seven girl dwarves
-random new chase scene added
-snow white needs to be more girl powery so she's like an environmental activist now or something
-everything else is the same and some how just these minor changes turns an 80 minute cartoon into a 125 minute live action movie.

Emma Watson as Belle in Beauty and the Beast made $1.2 billion because the casting made sense. Lion King $1.6 billion. Aladdin had controversy because of the music, but it still made a billion. It kinda sucked but Will Smith was still popular and the characters weren't weirdly race swapped.
Lady and the Tramp bombed and Mulan was explicitly aimed at a Chinese audience yet bombed in China and pissed off a lot of millennials eager to sing Be A Man. You'd think PoC girlbosses her way into defeating the Huns would be easy enough to print money, but the director just had to get cute and make a shitty version of a Chinese story no one cares about.
Little Mermaid flopped at $570k on a $240k budget (rule of thumb is to 2x for marketing). This Snow "White" and the seven people shit looks likely to be a flop because Disney won't just print money doing exactly the same thing they did with Beauty. Just remake the cartoon with real actors that look kinda like the cartoon characters it's not fricking hard.

Typically studios spend the same amount reported as "budget" on the marketing budget. So a movie's box office needs to at least make 2x reported budget to "break even." So Mermaid's budget was $240m x 2 = $480 mil. $570m box office nets $90m profit. Not a bomb (a term for an unprofitable movie) but a flop. Compared to Lion King $1.1 billion profit (budget $260m, box office $1.6 billion) and Beauty and the Beast's $940m profit ($160m budget, $1.26 billion box), an order of magnitude smaller profit is a flop.
It's not a hard rule, and a lot of that estimation is probably urban legend, but the cost of marketing is not usually reported and even if marketing was zero on all these movies mermaid made $1 billion less than lion king with the same budget. Flop.

For Mermaid, the race swapping was a big deal. My wife and her chick friends are typical white and latinx female shitlibs and just didn't bother to go see it.
