Fun fact: Sloth who also goes by Yoshi is a woman (male), but no one knew that she was at first. She and Lars grew close, and she tried to get Lars to crush on her before he found out her identity.

Someone had made a joke about how Sloth/Yoshi could be trans because of their male-coded interests in politics and gaming and their intelligent back-and-forths with Lars. No one actually suspected anything. But Sloth responded to it seriously and admitted they were trans. Blew everyone's fricking minds.

Man that's a whole rabbit hole in of itself. They did share a reunified server for about a couple months in a Golden Age with Lars as their icon - like a constitutional monarchy. What ended up happening is that some of Lars' "edgier" followers became disgruntled on how Lars cracked down on "degeneracy", and started a rebellion called - I shit you not - The R*pe Resistance . The RR propped up a competing icon by the name of Yusa, who was literally a 14 year old self-described p-dophile. The goal of which was to be as edgy and degenerate as humanly possible. It divided the server once again and Lars made an exodus, along with all the muslims.

Lars was the glue that held the community together, so when he left things quickly turned to shit. People started realizing how different they were from each other (turns out Progressives and Nazis do not get along), bullying each other, someone made a joke that got taken too seriously and was doxxed. And then AEO started removing mods on the reddit side of things. It splintered into about half a dozen servers and is essentially in decline now.

There are some major dramatic happenings I could easily write about from this, but I don't think I could weave a coherent and concise story between them. And the individual events can be juicy but none are worth their own post imo.

I wasn't planning on it. I considered this as the peak of Yeagerbomb drama. There's tons of other funny and neurodivergent stuff, some involving the r-sluration of yours truly, but I don't think I can make a post that would be as good / kino as this one.

There's a wide variety of humans displayed, some are indeed wicked and enjoy seeing "subhumans" suffer, other humans take pity on the Eldians and treat them as equals, even going out of their way to help them. There are numerous points in the manga where individuals on both sides were able to take the first step in moving past a history of bloodshed and hatred; recognize that across the walls and over the seas, no matter their race or nationality, everyone is the same.

The problem is that no matter how many of these cases of friendship there are, the history and hatred that has been welling for 2,000 years is simply much bigger than anyone can hope to possibly change. For everyone two people who put down their guns and talk, there are 10 million who will scream and curse the enemy in blind willful ignorance.

Yes, there are, as the series takes place in a mirror-Earth circa the 1920's so it has all the races that we have - Euros, Asians, Africans, blacks even. Being Eldian is determined by the "one drop rule", so no matter your skin color, if you have a single Eldian ancestor, you are Eldian and your whole lineage is now considered "tainted".

But the second theme I also recognize is the inevitability of conflict, the existence of human nature and the futility in attempting to change it to achieve a hopelessly naive utopia of peace and love. Even if we are all equal, and it is possible for individuals to move past their history, the overwhelming majority of people will not. It is in human nature to be tribalistic, to hate, to dehumanize and kill. What made these individuals different was their courage and willingness to question what they are taught. These traits are rare and cannot be forced upon the entire world.

I'm warping the truth for simplicity a bit. The "monster" Eldians ARE humans, but what happened was that over 2,000 years ago, a slave girl by the name of Ymir accidentally made contact with the "source of all organic matter" which is shown in the manga as a strange worm in an underground primordial pool. It gives her blood the the power of the titans, and the Eldian tribe (the name Eldian originally came from the tribe not as a name of a race) used her submissiveness and her power to conquer neighboring tribes, before raping and breeding her so they could have more of the power. Over the next few hundred years, Ymir's blood spread through s*x and r*pe, and anyone who had her blood (one drop rule) became a "Subject of Ymir", although the rest of the world knew them as the misnomer "Eldians". To be a Subject of Ymir was to be spiritually connected to other Subjects of Ymir and made your body and mind be completely under the will of the Royal Family - special Subjects of Ymir who were directly descended from the Eldian king that r*ped and bred Ymir. You don't turn into a titan by will, it's done by the Royal Family to use you as a tool.

Essentially the Eldians ARE humans in every single respect, but they were cursed by being the descendants of the r*ped slave girl Ymir, whose past has been whitewashed so she is worshipped by Subjects of Ymir as a God, and treated by the rest of the world like a Lilith-figure who made a deal with the devil. So the rest of the world makes them second-class citizens, puts them in concentration camps, and indoctrinates their children through the education system to hate themselves and be wracked with racial guilt because of the crimes of their ancestors.

The intelligent titans in the first season that serve as the antagonists - the Colossal, Female, and Armored titans - are actually Eldian children who grew up in a concentration camp and were indoctrinated to be the most fervent believers that their race is evil, and enrolled into a military youth program to become candidates for their country's next titan power-holders which they captured. They attack Paradis under orders from their government, and carried it out because they genuinely believed it to be an island of subhuman devils who deserved to die, hoping that if they succeed in their mission they can be one step closer to absolving themselves of their racial Original Sin and be seen as "one of the good ones" and thus be treated equally. However their own conflict throughout the series is that they realize that the island-dwellers were not evil subhumans, but normal people just like them and the people at home, that the antagonists were nothing but mass murderers that killed innocent humans who didn't even know what their ancestors did to deserve it. So the antagonists begin seeing through the veil of racism.

All of the mindless titans that you see in the first season in the series are actually Subjects of Ymir from across the world who committed crimes so egregious (like insurrection) that they were given the highest punishment, one even greater than being executed. They are put on ships that cross Atlantic/Pacific seas to the island of Madagascar, where they are forcibly made into titans to serve their eternal life sentence. The story begins in walled city in what is Madagascar - but in the series it is called Paradis Island.

how do normal fans of the manga, normal by manga standards, react to the twist?

It was actually pretty well received. Especially because there was a lot of foreshadowing that hinted that humanity still lived. The world building for Attack On Titan is actually pretty good imo. Most of the controversy really comes from the final arc in the series. I think people like it alot because we live in a time where racism is a huge hot button topic, and the series plays with the idea in very interesting ways - original sin, racial guilt, treating different people like subhumans, realizing that everyone is the same but were taught to hate each other, genocide etc.
