I mean wtf do they want him to say, the inflation stuff is a global issue and has essentially nothing to do with US domestic policy.

Rightoids just want to keep linking it to him because they assume the median voter doesn't understand basics about how the world works, and they're probably right.

Jump in the discussion.

Inflation is being caused by the US keeping interest rates artifically low for like 10~ years which was a bipartisan effort, blaming the pandemic is a good smoke screen though

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Europe does it too, but its much more complex than that. During the covid hysteria many economies in the world went into shut down. Meaning the production rate goes down, despite money being "thrown around". The shutdown is most likely the reason for this

Why are prices on those goods rising, pizza?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

A number of reasons.

A) Deflation during the pandemic due to a rapid drop in demand for goods and services.

B) A rapid increase in the demand for those goods as the global economy opened back up, which means a spike in demand as supply was down.

C) Other factors like the chip shortages causing the price of vehicles to increase, this was about a 3rd:

In its report, the BLS highlighted in particular the sharp rise in the price of cars and trucks (10.5 percent) and said this alone accounted "for more than one-third of the seasonally adjusted all items increase."

Or:

"A significant chunk of the rise in inflation so far has been driven by a small handful of categories most directly affected by the pandemic and recent easing of restrictions—e.g. airfares, hotel room rates, car rental prices,"

Combine this with insane amounts of price gouging people are engaging in to take advantage of inflation ignorance.

The point is prices have gone up for numerous reasons that exist outside of any kind of money printing.

Anyone telling you otherwise is lying to. All I've learned from this is most Americans are economically illiterate and think inflation is only a factor of money printing and nothing else.

They're also just being incredibly misleading, like trying to cite the pandemic low for gas prices as demand was cratered and then using the increase since demand went back up to spam dumb shit about how gas prices are totally up 200%.

I've wondered how much of it is this as well, but why tf would, as they claim, 56% of bsuinesses straight up admit to price gouging? That as a survey seems weird.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

They asked them if they were able to raise prices beyond offsetting costs:

When asked how recent inflation has impacted profitability, 56% of retail businesses responded that inflation gave them the ability to raise prices beyond offsetting costs.

I know, I was more surprised they would openly admit that, but I guess it's anonymized.

Idk, not like they'd be held accountable anyway. I got super blackpilled about American business during the Trump f-35 fiasco. They're willing to just tell absurd lies for political points.

They've learned they can exploit polarization to protect themselves.

Like when walmart fired thousands of workers and then thanked Trump for cutting their taxes so they could "increase wages" and conservatives just praised walmart on social media for a month despite it being an objective lie.

So if you admit the majority of the increases is due to price gouging, then how do you make the argument it's not due to the incompetence of the current administration. Its not like they're aren't rules about gouging during a natural disaster right? You can't make one argument and not accept the other.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Because it's also caused by other factors.

Also knowing they're price gouging and proving they're price gouging is 2 different things.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

So youre saying a administration with millions in resources cant figure out what a adult who's parents wont let him go to Alaska did. Which makes them even more incompetent. There's other factors in play, not just money machine goes brrrr, but i find it hard to believe even you cant see the logical fallacy you just put yourself in. Either way the administration (and its policies) are behind the policies making the inflation worse.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

how exactly do you prove price gouging?

Show me this standard you for doing so. Like, this seems like you being stupid, not me contradicting myself. Your argument "her dur but the government has money so that means nobody can ever get away with anything" is r-slurred.

Outside of very obvious cases proving price gouging is difficult.

To prove you even more delusional, we literally have probes underway looking into price gouging:

USD is now a global currency. It would need to print tons more or lose its reserve status for monetary inflation to occur. What we are seeing is the price inflation of goods and services across currencies (i.e. non-monetary) due to massive shortages as a result of pandemic recovery. If the inflation were monetary one would only see it inside US borders. Instead, the inflation is worldwide and high no matter the currency payments are denominated in.

USD is now a global currency. It would need to print tons more or lose its reserve status for monetary inflation to occur.

What have been the relative change in prices for USD compared to other currencies?

Most USD is spent within the US. Since US has funded about $1.3T (through tax revenue and monetarily through the Reserve), where do you think that money has been spent?

Jump in the discussion.

What have been the relative change in prices for USD compared to other currencies?

This is the right question to ask. A cursory search shows that the dollar is down a couple points since the start of the pandemic, but not by much.

Most USD is spent within the US. Since US has funded about $1.3T (through tax revenue and monetarily through the Reserve), where do you think that money has been spent?

I think that money has been hoarded by worldwide institutions and largely hasn't been spent.

I think the government stimulus that did precipitate higher inflation was the direct checks, because that money was actually spent in the economy and played a major role in kickstarting global demand after pandemic-related demand suppression. No one's talking about it, but the stimulus checks have demonstrated that any UBI would cause huge inflation, compared to an equal dollar amount of monetary stimulus.

I think you probably should, you literally have no idea what you're talking about.

A) you're not accounting for the deflation that took place during the pandemic.

B) you're completely ignoring, for example, the fact the price of cars and trucks alone is driving a substantial portion of inflation and this is completely unrelated to money printing and more so a factor of chip shortages:

In its report, the BLS highlighted in particular the sharp rise in the price of cars and trucks (10.5 percent) and said this alone accounted "for more than one-third of the seasonally adjusted all items increase."

Or:

Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate, noted that June's inflation would be three percent if it were compared to the same period in 2019, when conditions were normal before the pandemic. Still high, but not nearly as bad as 5.4 percent looks.

We're in the middle of a massive spike in demand for goods coming off of a massive decline in the demand for goods during the pandemic, driving supply shortages:

This spike in demand as the economy returns to normal is putting pressure on reduced supply for some goods and services, which are slower to get back to where they were.

This isn't even getting into stuff like:

Airlines are slower to get their airplanes back into service—hangared because the pandemic stopped people flying—than the rise in demand from air passengers, driving up airfares.

Or:

"A significant chunk of the rise in inflation so far has been driven by a small handful of categories most directly affected by the pandemic and recent easing of restrictions—e.g. airfares, hotel room rates, car rental prices,"

It isn't as simple as "HUR DUR DA MONEY PRINTING IS TO BLAME" The only people under this delusion are poorly educated idiots that don't have a basic idea what they're talking about, or at best have a simplistic understanding of how inflation works.

If you'd like to read more about why you're an r-slur:

https://blogs.cfainstitute.org/investor/2021/04/19/myth-busting-money-printing-must-create-inflation/

Mind the gap between rhetoric and reality, Ted Cruz does not know what he's talking about.

Just because CPA is a bad measure of inflation doesn't mean it isn't caused by printing money. Deviation from long run equilibrium cannot account for more than + or - ~2% inflation. The kind of nonsense you're spouting hasn't been supported by economists since the 1970's when it failed so spectacularly. Inflation is and always has been a monetary issue.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Inflation can be caused by printing money, the issue here is you are objectively wrong when you claim the increase in prices we are seeing is due to money printing, it isn't.

Obviously, if the price for goods and services collapses during a pandemic and then suddenly sky rockets as the global economy opens back up you're going to see an increase in the price of goods and services as supply catches back up to demand.

Jump in the discussion.

A frickload of regional corporate CEOs are rightoid as heck and I wouldn't be shocked if they were intentionally keeping prices high just out of spite.

For the record, the price gouging right now is out of control:

https://globaltrademag.com/more-than-half-of-retail-businesses-are-using-inflation-to-price-gouge/

-56% of retail businesses say inflation has given them the ability to raise prices beyond what’s required to offset higher costs

-Over half of retailers have increased prices by 20% or more on average

-52% of businesses are offering fewer or no discounts this holiday season

-Shrinking discounts and increasing price of complementary products are most popular ways businesses are driving up prices

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

What I don't understand is why they're doing that now? They'd only do it if they knew people would still pay the higher prices at a level that brings in more profit than selling more at a lower price. Do consumers have more money to spend now or is it just something they could have always done and are simply getting away with it now? Even if they're blaming inflation to get away with it, surely there'd be pricing people out of products right?

genuine question I don't understand this stuff.
