90% of online writing advice is geared towards genre schlock regardless. Characters are discussed using quirks and sheets.

I remember being on a writing forum during the first year of undergrad and they unironically believed the Joss Whedon meme.

Unironically, your best advice (other than just writing) is to pick up a classic book and read it. it should be old enough to predate YA and TV Tropes. I recently started the KJV.
