Turns out Russia is using plastic soda bottles and velcroe'd Nikon cameras in their $70 000 drones :marseyxd:

Firstly, here is the scary :marseyohno: wikipedia page for the drone. And here is a hohol reverse engineering this advanced piece of technology

And here is the transcript for that vid: Title: Bottle inside a Russian "Orlan-10" army drone.

0:01 … We've gathered a number of downed Russian drones for study. We wanted to share examples of the "space age" engineering with our Western partners, but as soon as we've sent a couple of photos they went into a system shock. "Are you f-n kidding us?" they said. "This could not possibly be modern army technology. Dig through this garbage yourselves."

And here we are…

0:20 Let's take a look at the "Orlan-10" drone and check out some of those "super up to date" technical solutions, held together by the notorious "spiritual bonds" so dear to every Russian soul. (cynical)

0:30 Perhaps we'll be able to spy on some technological tricks we can later teach in our middle-school hobby workshops. (cynical)

0:44 Let's begin. This is drone's camera unit. The front plate proudly states, "Made in Russia." But in the back is a "Canon" camera … fastened with Velcro!

1:00 The best feature -- you can unfasten the "Canon" and use it to take selfies.

1:08 The camera (being Japanese) is in perfect working order (even after downing of the drone).

1:10 Take a look, Russians engineers have super-glued the mode-dial, so the camera does not accidentally turn off in flight. The zoom is also fixed. The bottom two lenses are thermal-vision modules.

1:24 There's a plethora of other curious technical solutions which I shall not waste your time on, because I want to show you the most important part -- the notorious "spiritual bond" no modern Russian technology exists without …

1:38 … THE BOTTLE !

1:41 I am not pulling your leg, and this is not a fake. This here says, "Fuel tank," and here "Ignition". And this is a plastic screw cap and a common soda bottle, riveted in here.

2:05 In short, "Without a bottle the Russia can't be Russia."

Couldnt have said it better myself :marseypig: :marseylaugh: :marseypoor:

That they use a consumer-grade photo camera explains why the russian UAV "videos" run at about 1 frame per second - they're literally serial images taken by the camera and then cut together after the fact too look kinda like a video :marseylaugh:

The funniest part is that the the russian army spent around 70k-120k $ for EACH of those puppies.

Given how underfunded each russian institution is you'd think that money would be better spent elsewhere but instead most of it was pocketed by someones nephew and with the rest of it they bought trash tier "military equipment" :marseyxd:

I finished some tech building classes and the main point of those classes was to build a product as simple as possible yet the big companies build products as hard as possible to frick consumers over like inside Xbox series X they use a cut ssd to make sure you won’t be able to replace it with a bigger ssd than they made a special slot if you want to add a second ssd and that slot only read MS made ssd’s

Jump in the discussion.

Or they don't want to have to set up their OS to be compatible with multiple ssds and troubleshoot all the problems of varied hardware. The entire point of consoles is standardized hardware to simplify development and optimize performance at a low price point.

Dude I been very long time in console hacking community. You can play ps3 games from USB and the loading difference will be minimal. Xbox 360 unique hdd (that was 5 times more expensive than regular butt hdd) was slower than regular usb

“ USB (into area) -> Average: 16.82 secs, St. Dev.: 0.32 secs USB (out of area) -> Average: 21.73 secs, St. Dev.: 0.43 secs 320GB HDD (into area) -> Average: 17.19 secs, St. Dev.: 0.23 secs 320GB HDD (out of area) -> Average: 24.71 secs, St. Dev.: 0.60 secs”

I can use any controller or headphones on my jailbroken switch and all controllers have same button mappings because it’s the companies that set those limits so they can sell their merch

SSD are also all standardized like those blue touch controllers the reason you can’t use a regular ssd on Xbox series is because MS made funny shape ssd and they have a block on non approved ssd

Sony forgot to put that limit and you can put a slower than 5500mbs ssd and play without any troubles

So I understand your Reagan but companies don’t really make money from selling consoles but they make money for selling accessories, software and merch

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I'm actually very into the community angry at how consoles work. Here's my biased take

Weird that you need a whole community and support to go what you want on consoles whose entire design theory is that they are plug and play.

Way to ignore all of my points and provide anecdotes. Also, console jailbreakers are all unironic fricking r-slurs, just keep yourself safe and buy a pc LMAO.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

My point is that companies want to sell their overpriced accessories and that they’ll ad stuff to make it impossible to find a cheaper alternative. Am I wrong ?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yes. What they want is a few very uniform products so that they don't have to develop for a million different options.

It's much easier to optimize games to a very narrow range of hardware configurations than it is to make it work with whatever some idiot 9 year old buys on Amazon and slaps into his console.

If you want easily customizable hardware and all of the pains in the butt that come with that, then buy a pc.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

You can use PS5 DS on PS3 without any updates because Sony controllers all have same certification. You can play ps4 games on ps5 using ps4 controllers but you cant play ps5 games with ps4 controllers when the button mapping is exactly the same. Ps5 controller has no new buttons. The only controller that you can buy now for ps5 is Sony made.

Or better case why did Sony started a lawsuit against people that ware selling ps5 faceplates in 2020 ?

They legit want to be the only one who can make and sell ps5 accessories

Myth. The company that patented the particular pen spent $1 million of the R&D to get a patent for the pen, and supplied the pencils to NASA and the soviets for $2.39 per pen. US bought 400, Soviet’s bought 100. They did this because a couple years before the purchase they spent a little over $4k on 35 mechanical pencils.

Imagine being such a snob that you are angry you only got killed by a $70k drone with recycled components instead of a $2m "prestige" drone. SMH, this kind of attitude is why our military is so environmentally unfriendly and wasteful. Honestly it gets me angry how many of our tax dollars are wasted with inefficient massively expensive solutions that create lots of pollution and waste when a lower-cost alternative would do the job just as well.

Why are we even laughing at this? Russia should be laughing at us for wasting so much money on drone presentation and style rather than functionality. For the price of even one of our UAVs, they can build thirty of these things, strap bombs to them, and overwhelm us with numbers. (While simultaneously being more environmentally friendly.) This is literally the whole idea behind drone swarm tactics: quantity over quality. If Hong Kong had used this stuff, they'd be their own nation state instead of a Chinese vassal.

Ukrainians are, shockingly, making shit up once again. The velcro is blocking HDMI output on the camera, meaning it cannot be used for live feed from the drone. They must have another camera in there that actually sends live feed to a controller, not just thermal vision cameras. The Canon is probably used either for footage post landing or maybe high-ish res images in recon - as they're using a prime lens which cannot zoom, I think it's mainly there for low light where smaller cameras fare badly.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Guess you're right, looks like a 50mil. But Im a fujicel so idk much about canon tbh

Jump in the discussion.

Yeah, the lens looks like 50mm 1.8 and the camera is almost certainly 750d/Rebel T6i, the button and button icon layout fits perfectly. It seems to be in video mode, so maybe it's just a backup/alternate footage, though like I said the prime lens makes me think low light photography recon - the switch might've been flipped as it's the mode dial that's glued, but maybe not, maybe it's used for video which is kinda stupid IMO as it can't do 4k. Still should be better in low light than you'd expect from small sensors on drones.
