Despite the immense poverty in many African nations, the value of the family unit is still strong. Compare African immigrants to many (obviously not all or even the majority) black Americans and you will see a night and day difference in culture and values

They didn't "forget their roots" their culture was stamped out by force during the generations of slavery. I'm not black, but the same thing happened to mine. My grandparents were struck by their teachers if they spoke their first language in school. Neither my father or I speak the language.

Right, and I acknowledged this in another comment I made within this thread. This loss of their culture is a result of generations of disenfranchisement and systematic racism. But that doesn't make it any less true that many of the issues the black american community faces is a result of the culture they have currently adopted.

African immigrants are more likely to hold a college degree than US born blacks and compared to all immigrants that come to America from all over the world, African immigrants are the most likely to hold US citizenship and speak proficient english. Despite facing the same systemic racism that african americans face, african immigrants overall have more socioeconomic success. I would theorize the difference is this: the marriage rate for african immigrants is nearly double that of US born blacks. That's a cultural difference
