I'm honestly not sure about this. I've known quite a few Oregon lefties in my time and a lot of them really have been on the koolaid for decades and they have some inner conflict between being woke and being moral. So they're comforted by freeing a murderer because it's woke but it also reminds them on a very superficial level of To Kill a Mockingbird and what they were taught when they were kids.
And in my personal experience with people in the political machine here when they go mask off, they are semi-aware that they're participating in corruption and enriching themselves through it, but feel it's okay because they don't steal too much and they're doing so many good deeds that the Republicans wouldn't do. So they're always looking for some kind of moral victory to make them feel like they're the good guys. And that leads them into weird paths like this where they do stuff that's politically self-destructive and probably not even virtue signalling, just dealing with their own inner demons.
The other thing to seriously consider though is the network of far-left donors who paid for all the DAs who are just straight-up saying "we like crime". The nicest word you could call them is "accelerationist". They've probably got their people in position in the governor's staff and are gaslighting her that everyone wants mayo murderers pardoned and this will be extremely popular.

This but 100% unironically. The privileged mayo lawyer/journo class who have controlled our justice system against the will of the voters since the 1960s at least never have to worry about incarceration so it's all just theoretical to them. They think it's no big deal, it's like getting detention in high school.
It would be a lot more fair if we had a system where prison sentences get longer the worse the crime until you hit maybe 15 years, then you get the death penalty. And then if your crime is even worse than that, you don't get to die, you get a life sentence.
