This old guy is still trolling his fans

https://old.reddit.com/r/books/comments/uph45l/game_of_thrones_author_says_winds_of_winter_could?sort=controversial

Last book came out in 2011 or something like that. I don't remember any of it anymore and just gave up, but he does this once a year to troll us. It's well done. It hit /r/popular.

Tolkien also had enough materials for his kid to release like 3 books after his death as well. Martin is just a lazy bastard whoโ€™s drunk on HBO and From Soft cash he knows he doesnโ€™t need to try anymore.

At this point the fans are in a froth with anticipation, and theyโ€™re especially desperate to see the real ending considering how they hated the HBO finale. Nothing he writes could ever fully satisfy that. Thereโ€™d be a serious danger of nerd outrage like with what Lucas had been dealing with ever since Episode 1.

On the other hand, if he never finishes the story, his reputation will never take a hit, and these same nerds will eat anything he does mention out of his hand.

Plus he hardly needs the money anymore.

Yeah, I think whatever he does with the ending will be ripped to shreds with hate and they will have a meltdown. I don't get the feeling he cares though. He's the male JK Rowling and he has plenty of money and doesn't care if people hate him.

lol GRRM isn't the fan darling you think he is. he was spared a lot of criticism after the show turned to shit, but after it ended people have been calling him lazy, misdirected, sold out.

he can follow the same story beats as the show did but intertwine them with the same quality the previous books had and people would be just fine with that.

There has to come a point where your shit is just so hyped that it cripples you. Itโ€™s so overhyped now that disappointment is inevitable heโ€™ll never be able to write a satisfactory ending.

Especially if the books end along the same lines as the show.

What I'm wondering about is his payment. I know these people get millions upfront from publishers but they have deadlines to meet, so I wonder how this works when it's been over a decade and he hasn't delivered. I can see them not caring if he's a couple years late but it's been over a decade and still hasn't been released so the publisher just gave him money to sit on his fat butt and do nothing.

The ice dragon was an old story he had republished to capitalize on the fame of game of thrones. It was published in the early 80s if I remember correctly. So it's even worse than him focusing on a new story instead of the main one. He's downright grifting his fans.

Dance with dragons sucked and I am glad he will never finish the next book

Jump in the discussion.

i think the problem is he saw how terrible the ending was (and the reaction to it) of the TV show, so he's had to scrap an entire book to rewrite the story.

i'm always going to believe this, based on absolutely nothing other than "yeah that seems like it could happen".

Jump in the discussion.

He made some kind of comments about how the show ending had some things in common with his planned ending, but I think the main implication was just dragon princess going crazy and being a bad guy.

He's an anti-war fat man whose story's ending is almost certainly going to conclude the necessity of war at least sometimes. He has no way to square that circle and, more importantly, square it in a way that makes sense, is interesting, and doesn't just go for the obvious subverting expectations shock value. I thank God every day he didn't make me ASOIAFtard.

Jump in the discussion.

It doesn't impact the quality of the first two books, they were published before the break. The Name of the Wind is still very good fantasy and I would still recommend it (if you go into it knowing the trilogy might never get an ending). The Wise Man's Fear isn't as good (and has a really weird interlude part) but I still liked it.

As for the Twitter thing people would constantly heckle him on Twitter for not finishing the series and he took it really seriously. Like he'd get drunk and try to publicly fight back against anonymous tweets. It was sad to watch.

i'll still read it in 20 or 30 years when it gets finished by someone else after he's died, but at this point i don't care enough to BUY it. i'll just pirate it.

which sucks cause i was so fricking in to those books. i started reading after the first episode aired and then had finished all the released books before the first season ended (that last actually published book came out after season 1). book 4 and 5 were...not great. the whole "i'm just gonna split the characters and only write about certain ones in each book!" thing fricking sucked. i stopped watching the show with the idea of "i wanna read the book first" and still haven't went back to watch the show. the wait has just been too long and now any hype i had is dead.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Pretty much same.

The last few books just sent the whole thing off the rails. First couple were good because the pacing was tight and things were happening.

I think theres a way to rewrite the whole series in 3 or 4 books that ends up being really fantastic. Tyrion gunning down Tywin always felt like the apex of the series. Should have basically been wrapped up after that.

eh, only if you ignore like...basically every other character. if that ended it, there would have been a lot of stuff left hanging.

Yeah because apparently there are like 18 more novels worth of content after that point. Maybe im just pick that event because it's at the end of the last book that wasnt dogshit.

With a redo, I think you can cut out the shitty Dany plotline. Would probably need to cut down the whole supernatural bullshit as well. Cut dorn out and woweee, we just saved a ton of trees and time.

It's sad because it could've been a fantastic story, but he wrote himself into a corner and lost his passion a long time ago. The show would've been his chance to fix it but he just shrugged and let the showrunners drive that into the ground as well, such cases

I think my favorite part of this sneed session are the nerds wholl start recommending all the walmart brand book series

Steven Erikson is my favorite author. Memories of Ice is my favorite in the series, Deadhouse Gates is my second favorite. Book 3 and 2, respectively. Book 1, gardens of the moon, can be a bit rough though. He also has a prequel series, and a sequel series. And series of novellas about a couple of side characters that are necromancers.

This dude just basically described how theres only two books in this TEN BOOK SERIES that are worth a darn, GRRM is finished this time guys!

There is also another series set in the same world, the Malazan Empire series, by Ian C. Esselmont. He's decent, but not as good as Erikson. They created the world together.

Even better, Dollar store GRRM has his own generic brand copycat too
