I’m hopping on a plane later tonight and have a friend scared I’m going to die. I’m just going to Colorado so I can come back the next day but that’s somehow scarier than the literal dozens of times I’ve sky dived.

My brother is a pilot. My parents will watch those plane crash investigation shows on National Geographic religiously for some reason.
I guess it’s not surprising how quickly things can go wrong for a 700,000 lb box, 30,000 ft in the air, going 800 mph.

People have an irrational fear of dying in an extreme accident. If you asked someone whether they would die by nuclear blast or cancer most would pick cancer even though it is actually a much worse fate, but it's not as immediately terrifying. Same reason why people advocate against nuclear power despite it being orders of magnitude safer in terms of deaths caused by it.
People are bad at weighing a tiny chance of guaranteed death vs. a medium chance of being really badly hurt
