I just watched the first 2 episodes of "Foundation"

Why have they done this? Why take one of the most influential and interesting science fiction series ever written and cram it into a young adult novel framework. I'm actually seething right now.

I don't care that they made all the main characters black women. Honestly I think everyone being like a Southpark future 'goobacks' would have been even better but don't give a shit about that very much. But if you're literally incapable of writing flaws into characters played by black women then don't cast them. Shit is so obnoxious. At one point she literally lectures a bunch of presumably the smartest people Seldon can find to organize a galactic encyclopedia about their bigoted assumption of base ten. Having chosen ones in the foundation series proves the show creators didn't read of understand the series.

Didn't read this. Saw emojis and got gist.

99% of Asimov books are men sitting around in rooms talking to each other. What did you expect?

Lee Pace spends a whole episode wandering around the desert with no shirt on. I give it a thumbs up.

Empire's storyline is the best part of the show, and Lee Pace carries it exceptionally.

Yes . Only disappoitment with the three emperors is that I originally thought the oldest one was Nigel Terry from Excalibur.

I was shocked to find out Lee Pace played him too. Make up team did an excellent job.

Isaac Asimov is one of the rare people who has auditory memory, which is why the vast majority of his books are dialogue.

Didn't the Internet show us there really was "talent"? It used to be commonplace belief corporations covered up great music or comedy or whatever. There are too many TV shows for the number of actually-talented people. HBO limits their comedy shows to only people who worked on Seinfeld and they have more hits than Netflix.

Was that honestly a surprise to you? Have you not learned that should be the default assumption for any newly produced American media adaptions? :marseybaited:

I was kinda delusional because of Dune tbh.

That was okay, Villeneuve is great, but it was still too BIPOCy for my tastes. The Kynes kweenification right off the bat for no fricking reason other than to rub it in your face. And then when characters are basically supposed to be space Afghanis they hire mutts and nogs for the main roles instead of you know actual raghead actors. America must die

It didn't really change the story for the casting so I didn't really care all that much.

But I thought he got the general feel for the story and told it in a way that wasn't super dull. I love weird space politics and religion but I know I'm in the minority. I was most impressed that he got across a ton of info in a relatively short amount of exposition but didn't make it a total snoozefest. I hoped that because he had pulled that off, someone would be able to do Asimov justice but I guess it's just not to be.

Yeah he did a great job of condensing the exposition-heavy first half of a very very lore-dense book for sure. Looking forward to pt 2!

The Expanse? You mean baby's first scifi the Expanse? You mean steal a tired theme per book The Expanse? You mean John Snow goes to space The Expanse? You mean run out of money and do half a season in one room before getting canceled The Expanse?

The bar is so depressingly low for this to be the best sci-fi on tv in a decade.

Raised by Wolves?

You mean that show that had an amazing opening only to devolve in to cringey child like discussions on religion? The show that thought dialogue among a large cast of child actors in dusty tents was entertaining? The show that completely retcons itself in season 2?

The show had maybe three good episodes. Yes I hate everything.

I liked the religious stuff because they show that both sides are full of shitty people. I don't see how season 2 is a recon. They clearly show multiple ships leaving earth during the opener. And it's explained that humans have been going back and forth between both planets for a long time and the details of those trips have been turned into the Mithras religion.

I really liked it but to each their own. To me all babies look like Winston Churchill

Jumped straight into For All Mankind after it and the contrast is just so jarring.

Sat there with a cringe on my face all the way through Picard and then going from that to well-written, well-acted sci-fi drama put the nail in the coffin for Star Trek for me.

Thrres clearly talented writers still available, Star Trek just want their shitty direction and there's no getting them off it.

Foundation was dullest shit, tbh, and I like golden age sci-fi (mostly because it’s not so fricking whiny, preachy, or doomerist like modern sci-fi).

Asimov writes neurodivergent characters, with r-slurred Ayn Randesque names (he’s pretty cool but I don’t jive with a lot of his stuff).

Modern IDPol in Sci-Fi stories is stupid, modern races, as we know them, will likely change by 12,000 AD.

Cheddar Man lived 10,000 years ago and had dark skin despite being an ancestor of modern Bongs. If this is good science or IDPol fueled is irrelevant because if The Science says one thing, you should stick with it. Regardless, on the timelines of tens of thousands of years, humans tend to show a lot of changes—look at reconstructed native faces from 15 thousand years ago, they don’t look like modern natives and it isn’t a conspiracy, the group mean shifts.

Anyway they should have made everyone Black based on that explanation but maintained that they were European descendants from Old Earth, just to make everyone seethe.

I think there'd be some kind of convergence in race maybe with a pale drift as population centers move away from areas with high ultraviolet levels and then into space where getting vitamin D from UV is more important than skin protection. Then as the empire sprawls I'd assume divergent evolution albeit with some pretty comment central pressures like intelligence. Trantor could be kind of multi-racial as the empire's central hub but the racial stuff should be more strange than it is.
