[birdpost] how long do birds live?

As today is my BIRTHDAY, I have decided to make a post about bird birthdays- how long do birds live?

It varies based on species. Some birds may only live 2 to 3 years, while other birds can live up to 100 years!

Aging a wild bird can be difficult. For pet birds, many are raised from hatchlings, so their age can be documented. However, in wild birds, we don't get that chance. Typically, you can determine an approximate age of a wild bird. You can approximate the age by looking at colors, patterns, and wear on the feathers. There are 3 age ranges:

1. Hatch Year: the bird was born this year

2. Second Year: it has been a year since the bird was born

3. After Second Year: any age afterwards

However, just recently, a new aging system called the Wolfe-Ryder-Pyle system was introduced to bird banders, and I HATE it. While it is much more accurate and descriptive, it is SUPER difficult, and has like 27 different combinations to age the bird. It's stupid, but it works.

Here are some stats on bird lifespans:

-American Goldfinch: 2 years

-American Robin: 2 years

-Elf Owl: 5 years

-Ruby-throated Hummingbird: 9 years

-Yellow Warbler: 9 years

-Common Loon: 12 years

-Great Blue Heron: 24 years

-Mallard: 27 years

-Great Horned Owl: 28 years

-Atlantic Puffin: 33 years

-Bald Eagle: 38 years

-American Flamingo: 49 years

-Laysan Albatross: 49 years

And what bird lives the longest? It is estimated that Kakapos, a large, flightless parrot, can live up to 100 years! In 2014, Fred the Cockatoo celebrated his 100th birthday at the Bonogrong Wildlife Sanctuary in Tasmania, receiving a birthday cake from the queen of England! The oldest recorded bird of all time was Cocky Bennett, a Cockatoo that reportedly lived for 120 years, from 1796-1916! When he died, his owner had an obituary printed for his beloved pet.

So there you have it! What bird are you closest in age to? I'm closest to the Great Blue Heron

I was interested in African Greys for a while, since they’re particularly smart birds and pretty cool-turns out that they live up to 70 years in captivity and they get very attached to their family, so it’s like committing to keep the dude for the rest of your life.

They’re pretty cool dudes

Alex was said to have understood the turn-taking of communication and sometimes the syntax used in language.[13] He called an apple a "banerry" (pronounced as rhyming with some pronunciations of "canary"), which a linguist friend of Pepperberg's thought to be a combination of "banana" and "cherry", two fruits he was more familiar with.

When he was put in front of a mirror, Alex inquired the answer to the first existential question ever asked by an animal – “What color?” – referring to himself.

If the researcher displayed irritation, Alex tried to defuse it with the phrase, "I'm sorry." If he said "Wanna banana", but was offered a nut instead, he stared in silence, asked for the banana again, or took the nut and threw it at the researcher or otherwise displayed annoyance, before requesting the item again.

i know, that’s literally how hard it is to tell

Jump in the discussion.

Ok for real, that is informative if that is how it works. I didn't know that.

I can only correlate that to how difficult it is to identify spiders in early instars and how the instar classification works for exoskeletal creatures.

yeah, its definitely complicated, but with the Wolf-Ryder-Pyle system, you can narrow down to different molt stages. If you want to read more about it, look up molt limits in birds.

and ooh that sounds really interesting though!

My dad doesn't understand my switch to Linux or open source software in general. He told me to print a document today, something I hadn't done and never planned to do on Linux since I ditched Windows. I connected the usb cable to my laptop, did an lsusb, it was connected. I went into LibreOffice to print the document, it was undetected. My dad asked, "what can your garbage linux do?" and left the room. After 10 minutes I figured something out and printed the document. I handed it to him and told him my laptop isn't useless. He laughed at me. It almost looked like he proved me right. I knew it wasn't true but something about it just hit me. I don't know why I'm crying rn. Is it because I feel defeated by windows-only hardware or because I'm an incompetent wimp?
