Reddit has a massive issue with a lack of advertising revenue compared to their relative size and the fact that the subredit system literally should be incredibly easy to monetize for ads.

The fact that reddit cannot monetize /r/gaming and get companies to buy ad space for the new cool game coming out is ridiculously dumb. The niche subreddits should allow for companies that don't advertise on facebook to come to reddit and get a large number of clicks.

Even doing sponsored top posts or allowing for community reps to interact directly like twitter is a basic monetization strategy.

Reddit is completely unable to do this due to their jannie system. Having a bunch of unpaid volunteers come in and moderate subreddits to their whims and allowing for the jannies to control what the sub is about is the stupidest decision reddit ever made, and the only reason they don't back out of this is because it would cause massive reeeeing.

AEO is meant to fix that. They are trying to roll AEO out as a moderating group to popular subreddits so that they can more effectively monetize them, but reddit, in it's infinite ability to somehow fuck up simple business practices, is not giving AEO the correct scope in terms of job duties, and seems to somehow think that banning extremists on a bunch of niche subreddits that advertisers don't care about is the smart thing to do.

It's just corporate incompetence, and due to reddit being privately held, there isn't some board of directors to hold them accountable and tell them that fighting a culture war is really dumb, when you should be trying to make money.

Reddit really hits a weird mid point of a forum aggregator and a social media and can't figure out how to morph the two, so they've just tried to turn it into social media (since forums are dead and unprofitable) with some dumb baggage from forums. However they don't play to their strengths like community engagement and investment, and try to turn this into twitter like platform instead.

The problem is very similar to what Digg experienced. Problems with monetizing because posting was controlled by a select group of people(that coordinated with each other) that warped the community.

Digg tried to clean up and make a revamp to become more ad friendly but that just ended up with posters leaving en masse to reddit.
