I'm being serious, why is nobody talking about this?

In the past each generation had a better quality of life than the previous. The idea of National Service for young people was to instill good qualities in them and support the system that would give them a good future.

That is no longer the case. It doesn't make any sense to make life harder for young people who are facing a future of very little prospects of owning a home or retiring before they are 75.

Young people have:

• Already losts years of their life staying at home to defend the old from dying of covid.

• Taken on an enormous debt burden left by older generations, that allowed said generations to live comparably better. They will be paying for the rest of their lives and not see the benefit.

• Won't see their inheritance from property as it will mostly go to end of life care.

The policy would also have many benefits too the elderly and society:

• Get old people moving and active. Leading to healthier lives for the elderly and a reduced burden on the NHS.

• Reduce the "epidemic of loneliness" due to the social aspects of volunteering, the elderly can meet new people and experience new things.

• Things like childcare volunteering could reduce the burden of childcare on young parents and even lead to an increased birth rate for the country.

You may ask "Would you put the elderly in jail if they refused?" not at all! But it could be encouraged by removing locks on their pensions. For instance if you want the full quadruple lock you need to volunteer for 1 weekend at least every month.

We have a lot of old people in this country just sitting around doing nothing, it's time to get them moving and make them useful members of society again.
