Apologies for the repeat Hollys, I'm only writing this because I have insomnia and I refuse to take benzos. I can't live off pills my entire life.
Bomb First
The 27th of March 1977 was set to be a normal day, with flight KLM Flight 4805 and Pan Am Flight 1736 set to land in the Canary Islands. The KLM plane was being piloted by captain Jacob Veldhuyzen who was very respected in the industry. Accompanying him was First Officer Klaas Meurs, and Flight Engineer Willem Schreuder. Some useful stats regarding the KLM plane:
It had arrived from Amsterdam Airport
The aircraft was a Boeing 747-206B
It was carrying 14 crew members and 235 passengers
The larger Pan-Am plane original from Los Angeles Airport, and it was a Boeing 747-121. It was being piloted by Captain Victor Grubbs who was accompanied by First Officer Robert Bragg and Flight Engineer George Warns. Some interesting facts about the plane:
It was the first 747 to be delivered to an airline
It was carrying 380 passengers
In 1970 it was the first 747 to be hijacked
Unfortunately, things would go awry when a bomb was set off by the Canary Islands Independence Movement at Gran Canaria Airport, injuring eight people. There were threats of a second bomb, which caused all flights to be diverted from the airport. Instead, the planes were diverted to Tenerife.
Trip to Tenerife
Los Rodeos airport is a small airport on Tenerife Island, which is the largest and most populous of the Canary Islands. The Pan Am, which had enough fuel to last two more hours, wanted to do a holding pattern in the air until the threat was cleared but was instructed to land in Tenerife instead, the same place where the KLM plane would be landing.
As previously stated, Los Rodeos was a small airport (it only had one runway), so it was unusual to have five airliners coordinated. To make matters worse, it was a foggy day, which made it hard for air traffic control to see properly. While waiting, the KLM plane decided to refuel. This would prove to be a fatal error.
A stroke of luck
One of the passengers had a boyfriend in Tenerife and decided to offboard and remain on the island. This saved her life. Funny how fate influences things.
The terrible takeoff
The KLM was instructed to taxi down the runway and make a full 180 degree turn to take off. At the same time, the Pan Am was instructed to taxi down the same runway and take the THIRD exit. At first there were was some confusion. Did the air traffic control say first or third? That was cleared up with the controller responding: "The third one, sir; one, two, three; third, third one.”.
The Pan Am passed the first exit, then the second, then got confused with the third which would have required it to make a 148 degree turn followed by another. This would have been practically impossible, thus the Pan Am remained on the runway, unsure of what to do.
Meanwhile, the KLM was gearing for take-off until a crew member told captain Veldhuyzen that they hadn't been given clearance just yet. It was clear the captain was in a hurry.
Meurs radioed in to the control tower to say “we are at takeoff” to which the controller replied “OK” followed by "stand by for takeoff, I will call you”, indicating that he had not given takeoff clearance.
The control tower instructed the Pan Am to advise when it had cleared the runway. This caused alarm for one of the crew members of the KLM who asked the captain "Is he not clear that Pan American?”. The reply? “Oh, yes.” The KLM began accelerating down the runway.
The collision
When captain Grubbs saw the KLM approaching he exclaimed "Goddarn, that son-of-a-b-word is coming!” As he tried to make a sharp left to avoid the collision. By the time the KLM crew saw the Pan Am through the fog, it was too late to slow down, so the captain tried to takeoff instead, hoping to fly over the Pan Am. Alas, the plane was too heavy, as it had just loaded up on fuel, so takeoff wasn't as easy.
The planes collided in a hellish fireball that resulted in an inferno that could not be squelched for hours. 583 people died, with no survivors emerging from the KLM and 61 emerging from the Pan Am. It remains the worst aviation disaster in history.
conclusion
This plane crash fascinates me endless, and I've watched countless documentaries on it. I think it is a culmination of coincidences, miscommunication, and plain old impatience. Do you blame the KLM captain? The air traffic controller? Or do you think it was just a product of bad luck?
I've been enjoying Red Dead Redemption on my Nintendo Switch. I like John Marston's lines, he's a badass lol. You can tell the game is aged because the shooting is terrible but it's forgivable because of the good story.
My sister told me not to complain about not having a girlfriend but she doesn't understand, she's married. I'm 28, turning 29 next month, and have no romantic prospects. It's depressing as heck, but I'll keep trying. I'm not giving up. I WILL be a normie, whatever it takes. I believe I am worthy of being loved.
