Monday night drunk thread

Covered a 4 hour shift in Psych ward today so my friend could catch a flight. Went pretty well and then got a patient that was death glaring me, threatening to kill himself and me while masturbating using urine as lubricant. Fricked out of there and reread the report and it was a grown adult upset that he was asked to wash some dishes that resulted in a psych evaluation in the ER.

I don't have enough Grey Goose to deal with this.

at least this much unleashed: Zoomers In

I don't know anymore if the things I believe about men and women are true.

Every person is different, but most women want to be cared for, most women want to be physically protected from other men. It follows that if you don't go to the gym to work out, you are not really a man.

Is this toxic masculinity?

A man in a wheelchair can get laid if he shows he will stand up at the right time and do the right thing. It's just that if you don't have the foresight to understand that being able to do the right thing requires making use of your strength, you're not really performing masculinity. And women will notice.

There's this dual tendency in women in culture/media (that is, the representations of women which are often misleading), but women in culture are, generally, made up. There are women who have a masculine combat stance, but they are far fewer in real life than the women who prefer a man be around just in case and are willing to admit it, at least in their dating preferences.

I shouldn't say "dual" because there are no dualities. Something always emerges from a duality. This was one of the hardfought understandings of sorceryofthespectacle.

Dualities are an illusion of the Cartesian minds. If you discover a duality, you must be wary for something is missing. One of the reasons I have hope for the future is that culture, today called "memes" for reasons which bother me (it's just cultural exchange? It has always been "memetic"?) (The justification for the term 'meme' carries with it more than the format, but also the instantaneous dissemination. But instantaneous dissemination dates back to television: the spectacle is much less powerful without the image.) (Because the underground has existed since the 60s.) (It's just that in OWS times, those who hoped for an Internet style flash viral movement were ignorant of the heteronormative forces at work keeping the status quo firmly in power.) (The speed of communication empowered by the Internet was not sufficient to overcome existing barriers to change last time, and it won't this time, either.)

So memetics as a term carries this baggage because it presumes a theory of communication which is deeply false. This is the hill I choose to die on, but it's necessary to understand what I mean when I say that I don't worry about the future, I don't worry about the kids running the next movement, because crowd-sourced comic sections connect us. I call them crowd-sourced comics because it reflects their impact within the existing cultural forms.

One of the difficulties with the mass media of our time is it is reliant on a duality. Mostly mainstream plots revolve around good characters against bad characters, and people might 'change teams' in what amount to a reduction of good and evil to _empty aesthetic_. But the purpose of our media is to distract us from evil and the best way to do that is treat evil as the losing side in eternal depictions of warfare. Evil doesn't win because when evil wins it's frustrating at best and 'your people get murdered' at worst.

Something always emerges from a duality: from this empty sterilization of good and evil by mainstream culture, humanity has become a taboo. You can't depict people anymore, they must be rendered 'plastic.' But here I err: you can depict people, it's just that no one will care. This agency-robbing mythos that there is some conspiratorial force at work which renders are culture increasingly inert over the years is false. This is just what the mass man wants.

But the mass man gets hungry.

Or the mass man is out of work.

Then the movement happens. You are here, in the time before the movement arrives, but after it is clearly visible.

The Left has already begun a movement. Student protests are not about what they say they're about -- NO DUALITIES implies that they are also about what they say they're about, protests are about precisely what they are about. But they are more powerful when there is a movement stirring. Do you see?

The visual symbolic language of what people these days call 'memes' but I just like to call 'comics' because it's clearer as to their spiritual power constitute, roughly, neat dissection of divine masculine and divine feminine, representations of man and woman which interact for conversations in an underground, which was roughly uncensorable. The canary in the coal mine is 'watch people die': when people are not allowed to share these true stories, something has gone wrong.

other than that, freedom of speech is more or less available to the online denizens. The problem is that there's mostly bad speech in the underground, which is to say, it's not forbidden by the 'state' of leftist authoritarian language rehabilitation wholesome secular officers for no reason, it's mostly bad.

Here we walk this narrow line of satire and crass. (no dualities: thus, what is in the middle? thus, I laugh.)

The point about whether or not there are ever dualities is missing it: there are dualities, but they are reliably illusions meant to guide us. Masculine and feminine are a continuum, physiology has real effects on us, and why shouldn't it?

We're only human.

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey is no longer on the board of Bluesky, the decentralized social media platform he helped start. In two posts today, Bluesky thanked Dorsey while confirming his departure and adding that it's searching for a new board member “who shares our commitment to building a social network that puts people in control of their experience.”

The posts come a day after an X user asked Dorsey if he was still on the company's board, and Dorsey responded, without further elaboration, “no.” As TechCrunch points out, Dorsey was on a tear yesterday, unfollowing all but three accounts on X while referring to Elon Musk's platform as “freedom technology.”

Neither Bluesky nor Dorsey himself seem to have said how or why he left the board. For now, two board members remain: CEO, Jay Graeber, and Jabber / XMPP inventor Jeremie Miller. Dorsey originally backed Bluesky in 2019 as a project to develop an open-source social media standard that he wanted Twitter to move to. He later joined its board of directors when it split from Twitter in 2022.

But Dorsey hadn't seemingly been a particularly active participant at the company. In March, when The Verge's Nilay Patel asked Graeber for Decoder about his level of involvement with Bluesky, she said she gets “some feedback occasionally,” but implied he's otherwise “being Jack Dorsey on a cloud,” as Nilay put it. Months before that interview, Dorsey had closed his Bluesky account.

Bluesky did not immediately respond to The Verge's request for comment.

Update May 5th, 2024, 4:37PM ET: Updated with Bluesky's confirmation of Dorsey's departure from its board.
