This is kinda true, but everyone knows that there will be short-term dips. The point is that the stock market will always trend upwards over a long period of time. If that ever stops being the case, this means that the global economy is irreparably broken, at which point money won't matter and we'll all be living in a Mad Max world.

sure they will "eventually go up", but they will have to withdraw from the principal during bear market, and that will get compounded once "the market goes up". Their plans are not able to deal with this.
