...but as subtle as a jackammer up your arse.
The dev could have made things a lot more interesting by not making the evil route a mindless grind that tells you how bad you are every 5 minutes.
“Dialogue 3D” takes the convenient, infantile good-versus-bad conflict so many wish to apply to the real world and shows how argumentative bullshit only empowers the evildoers. It’s not like the goose-steppers are holding their fire as they provide thoughtful replies, either. As one might imagine, this makes a first-person shooter a lot less responsive, and a lot more difficult.
What the hell Polygon. Who would stop and ask "am I right for shooting at someone who is shooting at me" in a middle of the firefight. At least nobody alive after the firefight have asked that question.
You ask these questions when weapons are not being pointed at each other, not after.
Remember when they used to attack gamers because video games were all about violence and never offered a peaceful option? Then a game comes along that offers that choice and it's bad because you can't punch Richard Spencer in it.
1 - im partial to a bit of shut up and jam gaiden myself also im a bit fuzzy on the rules but is this bearded guy also up for being punched or is it only people he doesnt like
I have to actually agree with Ghazi... or at least the guy who said Undertale's message was bad.
The message wasn't "if you kill people for fun, you are a monster" it was, "if you kill these assholes that are actively trying to kill you and steal your soul and have killed six other children before you, you're bad." Which is fucking stupid.
That being said, I still liked the game even as insufferable as its fanbase is.
Appropriate level of violence against the appropriate people for that matter.
Kid wears a piece of clothing denoting his support for politics you heavily dislike? You could argue with them, but should probably mostly leave them alone.
Someone verbally threatening you or your family? You can reasonably argue you should rough them up a bit to get a message across so they know you'll fight back harder if push comes to shove.
Someone pointing a gun or knife at you/your family? Yeah, shoot to kill.
Undertale's message isn't supposed to be applied to real life, it's a moral critique of video games. You see monsters, you kill them and gain XP to increase your LVL, you get loot to kill monsters better...and Undertale prompts you to ask "why?"
Because it's convention. It's part of the medium. It's like when you're asked "would you kindly" in that game that everyone can't stopped masturbating about.
So when people are taking Undertale's "never kill anything ever" approach, they're ignoring the context in which the game exists. That is, you play a character that can't die, can rewind time, etc. which is crucial in being able to successfully Pacifist, Undertale Style.
Without it, you die. People die. There are actual consequences. You can't rewind the clock over and over until you figure out how to reach a peaceful resolution to a person running at you with a spear and murderous intent who hates you and your entire race.
I'm rambling. Video games aren't real life. They're not even close.
I guess that's true. It does indeed break the 4th wall in-universe many times. That said, I guess I have a problem with its treatment of asking the "why" question for videogames.
As well as ask why you "kill" and sacrifice "pawns" in chess but that could be because my own approach to videogames has always been min/maxing and winning. Less about the story behind it.
Of all things, the second Digimon series had the most thoughtful approach to the "You, the person holding the controller/at the keyboard, are the real monster!" meme. The first major villain was a guy from the physical world who became a self-styled evil overlord in the digital world and did all sorts of evil shit to the Digimon because he thought it was a VR game and none of it was real. Then when he found out it wasn't a vidya game, that the weird critters he was terrorizing were actual people, he lost his shit and surrendered.
That's what the games that lecture you on this shit don't understand. We're not doing it because we're psychopaths, we're doing it because it isn't actually happening.
Yeah, the monsters never did anything. Humans just think they did. Essentially the genocide run is accidentally walking into another country and just murdering everyone for the fuck of it.
But no, the game telling you not to do that is pro-fascist....
But rolling into other lands and hacking at everything in sight with my broadsword is my duty as a civilized white man.
So brave. Professing your desire to stand up to "Nazis" - we truly live in courageous times that people have the balls to come out and say that they dislike Nazis - future generations will tremble before the might of their ancestors.

Thank God both left and right wingers have abandoned pacifism and non-interventionist style politics.
I'm thinking we can get that nuclear holocaust sooner than later.

We had a good run, but it's high time to end this. Don't call it holocaust, call it "humanity went to farm, to run around free"

I'm surprised they don't just think that Undertale is an evil patriarchal gamergate game due to what the developer has said about them in the past.
