Leftist Reddit can't work because they have nothing to hate and bitch about and that is the only content leftists are ever able to contribute, outrage.
I tried. The software and UI aren't terrible. I could definitely see it taking off for certain niche that don't quite work for subreddits.
However the community is ... "Well isn't that special"... They can have their own little safe space on the internet and if it keeps them happy, what ever. Not my place.
Other than an alternative to reddit without the shitty admins, vote manipulation by said shitty admins (and users who they agree with and allow to vote-brigade certain subs), editing users comments by the shitty admins, etc.
Except they're editing comments because they don't like the opinions of those people. I don't think I'd laugh about being censored, but I guess if you don't value free speech it could be funny.
Yes. You or your ilk should make a new one if you care that much. It's not like you're banned forever from creating an alternative website if one closes.
They made an algorithm to keep T_D from gaming the system and shitting up the entirety of /r/all with things that the vast majority of reddit isn't interested in. If they're going to use vote manipulation, then reddit is in its rights to stop it. As for editing comments, that was a huge mistake, but I don't exactly blame the guy for getting frustrated that hundreds of people were calling him a pedo because he shut down a sub that was openly organizing a witch-hunt against innocent people.
Oh no what ever will we do if they are manipulating worthless imaginary internet points? Why don't you take all the admins to /r/karmacourt and try to call of impeachment if you care so fucking much?
Actually, no - it's not a fault of the website being "bad", it is a funding issue. I believe reddit also has a similar issue in that it isn't actually profitable, but voat doesn't have the capital to stay afloat.
Except they're editing comments because they don't like the opinions of those people. I don't think I'd laugh about being censored, but I guess if you don't value free speech it could be funny.
Oh no, I will no longer be able to write fuck /u/spez without being censored!
Not gonna argue that, I don't think anyone doesn't think it was childish and possibly the worst PR move he could have made. But whether or not it is significant or detrimental to the """"""amazing dialogue"""""" here on Reddit is a pretty emphatic "no".
Lol if I was him I'd just full on fuck with that shitty sub after all the shit they give him. He runs a glorified internet forum, might as well have some fun with it
Well the difference between a semi-joking word filter and directly editing the posts of users who disagree with you is pretty massive if you couldn't tell.
Listen candy-ass, the only thing he changed was from people user name pinging him to username pinging the mods of the subreddit. It was a word filter, not directly editing
Oh shit, absolutely nothing in that post says anything about a fucking word filter!
He edited a few comments that said "fuck u/spez" and replaced "u/spez" with the names of T_D mods, and then edited them back later. That isn't a word filter, dumbass. If when any time a person posted "fuck u/spez" and it got changed to "fuck u/t_dmodhere", then it would be a word filter. But what actually happened was he edited a few top comments. That's all.
The limp wristed candass retard let a foreign leader bring troops into the united states and let them attack US citizens. And he did nothing about it, he let a foreign army attack Us citizens on Us soil. He is utterly and completely incompetent and whiney chicken shit. He's going to go to jail, the_donald is going to get banned. And I'm going to laugh.
Yeah, it's not okay and shouldn't happen again, but let's not forget that he did it in an obvious way, changed it back, and immediately admitted to it and apologized. It's not the undercover misinformation campaign T_D thinks it was.
I'll probably get a few downvotes for this, but you're right and it's really not unreasonable to expect a platform to be decent. It's easy to say to switch websites, but when you have a huge platform like reddit not only is it hard to find an alternative but it's even harder to get anyone else to follow to an otherwise inferior place. While the issues so far have been pretty tame, I think it's good that we hold big Internet forums responsible for their bullshit, rather than call dissenters nerds for using Reddit too much and actually caring.
Of course this is r/drama so I'm probably arguing for you against a bunch of ironic shitposters right now.
It's easy to say to switch websites, but when you have a huge platform like reddit not only is it hard to find an alternative
Yeah, the reasons it's hard is because a huge community of people don't enjoy shitty toxic websites. The vast majority of reddit hated and disposed FPH and subs like T_D so when they're banned and their community goes "Off to this site we go every one!" no one follows them because no one cared for their company in the first place.
You don't create a super power website by letting toxic communities fester and take over.
Good. Maybe when 98% of anarchists are in prison from that honeypot the ones that aren't super cunts can join you in engaging in responsible political discourse
It really depends on how much traffic they were receiving and it's geographic distribution. There was probably enough traffic that self-insuring was not an option. Cloud hosting shouldn't be used for a "hobby", anyways. It's an enterprise solution. The problem with Voat stems from the fact that they approached it like a hobby rather than a business.
Self-hosting no, but there are plenty of options between that and an enterprise cloud solution that would have been better and easier for them to manage with the little experience and purpose they have.
$6k/month is a painful lesson for someone when their Dreamspark etc discount stops.
The Linux VM's are still expensive. I have a Linux VM on Digital Ocean now for my asp.net website. It costs me 5$/month. The same thing would've costed me more than 50$/month on Azure. Other stuff on Azure is pretty cheap though, like the Blob Storage thingy is a major plus. SQL Server too!
I know a lot of you are new, but Voat has been through a wild ride, and never at any point was it an easy one. My memories are bittersweet when it comes to Voat. Iโve sacrificed the best years of my life for Voat, Iโve lost my business partner whom I miss a lot, Iโve lost people in my life, Iโve given up golf which was my passion
Remember, if you are ever feeling bad about yourself, remember that you didn't upend your life just so you could run a shitty clone of a website because they "censored free speech."
Holy shit, thanks I needed this. Was having a bad day and felt like shit, now I feel like I can do anything that doesn't involve unending my life for a retarded Reddit clone.
Not just that, but upending your life so that losers can whine on the internet about fat people and say the word nigger. You ruining your life for that.
Copy pasting reddit to try to upend them, fucking moronic.
If you're going to take an idea, at least make if fucking good. Look at Discord, and see why it's popular. Can't just make the exact same shit and expect magic. ESPECIALLY if the userbase is filled with cunts who were butthurt they weren't allowed to be dicks forever on reddit.
This is something a lot of these people who feel Reddit Censors them don't understand. Like this guy they would realize how much fucking work it actually takes..
To be fair, they have a couple of nice features I wish Reddit had, like visible upvote and downvote counters, as well as more specific dates for when a content was posted
Let's be real here- they never left reddit. They just commented on voat every so often whenever they wanted to complain about reddit, use /v/coontowne, or take part in high school-tier infighting.
Fucking lol that they were expecting somebody to swoop in and invest in a website that is used for literally nothing beyond posting nationalist, gamergate, racist, fat-hate, and pizzagate content and extreme right-wing propaganda. Oh and whining about reddit.
I have laughed for ages about the fact that /v/MeanwhileOnReddit is the 8th most popular sub on Voat.
"Let's all fuck off to another site because Reddit sucks ass and we're never never never going back! And when we get there, we'll all just sit around jerking off to posts on Reddit!"
MWoR is the 8th biggest sub by subscribers. BUT. The thing about Voat is that they don't count inactive users. This is also how they've claimed past "growth," because when new whiny-babies went over there, the older folks would get sick of their shit and move on.
In the past 24 hours, MWoR, the eighth "biggest sub" (by subscriber) on Voat, has had a whopping 10 posts. The most popular one has 92 upvotes.
Posts on /v/pizzagate have biggest votes of around 150. Even the front page of FPH doesn't have a post over 60.
The announcement that they're closing has 562 upvotes.
Voat is already dead. They're just too stupid to see it.
Can confirm. Went to voat cuz I thought why not? More of a say in how the making of a site would go, I could still use Reddit. Didn't really care much for the whole free speech angle and all the conspiratards that were there but I could ignore them. Then wave after wave of shit people kept coming and I think what finally got me to leave was the whole shit over @she.
She modded /v/AskVoat and apparently people decided she was a cancerous mod over really miniscule things but amplified because she was one of them Ess Jay DoubleUs. Everybody wanted her head basically. A FPH mod defended her throughout the whole thing and he was modded to AskVoat and other subs she modded as well I believe. Said FPH mod told her he was suicidal and basically said he would kill himself if she didn't send him nudes. Kind of dumb for her to fall for that, I know. Anyway, he shares those pictures across Voat and @she just stops commenting. Some time between all this, maybe it was after, I can't remember, the owner, Atko, removes @she as mod from /v/AskVoat and someone else is given it. Before all that, I had assumed Atko was just going along begrudgingly, just tolerating the cancerous userbase, not really siding with them. That's when I knew he was with them. He didn't say anything when the whole witch hunt was happening and pretty much rewarded mob rule by removing @she. There were a handful of rational people during the whole thing but I knew that didn't matter if the owner wasn't going to be rational.

He didn't say anything because he was on vacation. He also didn't remove her; she deleted her account after the pics were released, so the sub was left with (and still has) no owner.
Yeah, but Reddit grew and Digg became less popular. The reverse has happened with Voat. Voater are all crying about how Reddit was so mean to them while their own platform is dying dead.
Someone should make a retaliation post to that where everyone in hollywood is secretly a woman because it is part of the feminists' evil plan to take over the world
I just visited voat and that description is spot on. Ok I didn't see anything gamergate related, but the number two post at "all" was from their pizzagate subvoat. It is essentially as if the_donald had their own version of reddit.
Buzz words aren't buzz words if they're still used to mean something. They become buzzwords when you suck the meaning out of it. Example: "right-wing propaganda" is a buzzword when you mean "something mildly pro-Trump", not when you mean "Hitler did nothing wrong"
Yeah but just because some people use it as a buzzword doesn't automatically invalidate all uses. In this case, it refers to actual identifiable racism.
We've had one interaction together. So you're trying to prove I'm overreacting to this using the assumption that I'm overreacting to this. A+ circular logic. Next time maybe don't assume I'm in the group when I call something racist
you asked me what we can do to call things racist now that people have diluted the meaning of it, instead of asking how we can stop people being oversensitive and fucking words up for everyone else
What else do they have? That's pretty much it. If devoatees didn't want buzzwords thrown at them then they wouldn't exclusively post content that could be described using buzzwords.
If you take a look at voat, pretty much the only communities still active are the ones that fit into those categories. Most of them are unlisted from /v/all and the front page still looks like a far-right shitshow most of the time.
The Buttheads In Charge have mentioned before that they've previously had offers from investors, but the potential investors wanted changes that weren't within Voat's vision.
the amount of redditers on 4chans pol since the election is hilarious enough. The hills are alive with the sounds of REEEEEEing. Mudlips vs shills all over
Stupid move anyways, and I facepalm at all the morons donating. It's a reddit clone. What did he expect? Even reddit doesn't really make that much money last I read, and this one fucking guy expects to be able to hold up a website that just has a shitty userbase on it.
The reason why companies put ads on 4chan is because it's both big and has a lot of non-offensive content (though one of its biggest advertisers recently dropped the partnership iirc). If a website has a lot of offensive content, then it's not eligible for the most common and convenient ad programs like adsense, and the owner needs to find sponsorships by themselves. It was a big issue with the original Encyclopedia Dramatica and one of the main reasons why it was closed; even though it was one of the most heavily-trafficked sites in the world, it couldn't use any ad programs and nobody wanted to advertise on it aside from a handful of sketchy porn sites and shit. It ended up hemorrhaging money despite numerous donators trying to keep it afloat. It's probably a similar situation with Voat but with even less incentive for sponsors because it's much less trafficked than ED at its prime and doesn't really serve any purpose beyond being a group home for bigots.
Mod of /r/Physical_Removal here. I cannot wait for voat to close down so that all the paranoid pizzagate kids come back to reddit and find my subreddit, from then on I will have an easily controllable army.
I'm kind of glad Donald got elected. Hillary with a republican congress would have been a disaster. Destroying the entire republican party in a single administration is a masterstroke, and it would have been impossible with Hillary in power.
Thank you for the inevitable impeachment hearings. That's gonna be some good TV.
Just curious, was this supposed to be some super-intimidating "Ya'll don't know what we've got in store fer ya" thing?
No one is buying it. Conservatives are so outnumbered that they can only hang onto power with gerrymandering and manipulation of the electoral college. The popular vote is forever out of their reach.
No, it's literally what it is. If you do or say something that the site doesn't like, the consequence is having your account or community removed. Voat users disliked the idea that they couldn't do or say exactly what they wanted without any consequence at all.
youre framing "doing whatever you want" as something sinister instead of just saying something though
if someone gets banned for disagreeing on immigration for instance they havent done anything wrong or malicious, theyve just given an opinion that certain people decided was not allowed
these rules are always misguided and abused
consider that in the future someone will be in charge that decides your ideas are abhorrent and not allowed, what do you plan to do then? withdraw from society?
Yeah, except "I don't like immigration" isn't something that gets banned, but "NIGGERS NIGGERS NIGGERS" and "FUCK FAT PEOPLE LET'S DOXX THEM" do.
Stop pretending that the banning or r/coontown, r/jailbait, and r/fatpeoplehate is anything but Reddit removing the worst of the worst of the most toxic communities.
The fact you conflate the two says more about you than it does about Reddit.
cringe lol i bet you felt really sorry for ellen pao too
Stop pretending that the banning or r/coontown, r/jailbait, and r/fatpeoplehate is anything but Reddit removing the worst of the worst of the most toxic communities.
really helped didnt it, its a great site now
and its not about those subs, its about the ones that people lumped in with them because theyre loathe to discussion and introspection
sort of like how idiots scream nazi at everyone who isnt a communist, everything that wasnt sjw friendly was a hate sub
The fact you conflate the two says more about you than it does about Reddit.
nigga youre the one conflating everything with coontown like youre negareddit personified
its funny to me that people always lump in fph because it wasnt even that bad, just the owners of imgur bitched because they were made fun of
nobody was actually doxed or whatever
also voat was formed because people started thinking the admins here were politically motivated and about to delete everything they didnt like in a moral panic
which isnt too far fetched given their history
sure it started with a few unsavoury subs, but theyre known for overreach and listening to the complaints of crazy people too
If Voat ever does close, I hope you still consider its limited existence an accomplishment. Voat has given a home and a voice to countless people for a few years now, and that's by no means a failure.
I still have my voat account from the first wave of the FPH exodus. Decided that I'm more of an )r/fatlogic kinda guy and left. By then coontown had taken over the site.
That's what killed the site imo. It was decent for a while, but then the coontown people came over and ruined it. Anyone that wasn't insane would look at the front page of nothing but white nationalist bull shit, and immediately hit the back button.
FPH, for all the drama it caused, was never racist. People on there talked all the time about how qualities you can't change about yourself, like skin color shouldn't be shamed by society, but eating too much sho. Politically speaking the sub is about an even split of left/right, not unlike this sub.
Plus, a good chunk of racists are obese, both the hicks as well as neckbeards.
considering Voat users love highly illegal porn so much, the perverts who use that site could just organise a darknet garage sale of horrendous stuff and all the bitcoin raised could go to cover the costs?
I know a lot of you are new, but Voat has been through a wild ride, and never at any point was it an easy one. My memories are bittersweet when it comes to Voat. Iโve sacrificed the best years of my life for Voat, Iโve lost my business partner whom I miss a lot, Iโve lost people in my life, Iโve given up golf which was my passion, and even with all this I still believe in Voat.
When you're so incompetent you have to give up your life to copy an open sourced website that you spend no time moderating.
How on Earth are they failing? Aren't they supposed to be Reddit but without all the SJW socialist cucks? Shouldn't it be a Randian capitalist wonderland over there?

Still sad to not have a viable alternative to reddit who feel like a 2008 Yahoo News comment section. Maybe even worse.

We still have Imzy!
n/a mizmoose 2017-05-17
I seriously wanted Imzy to work. But the place is the anti-Voat. It's so leftie liberal it makes my teeth hurt. And so it's a zombie, too.
n/a SuchSpookySkeltal 2017-05-17
Do they still have the invite-only thing? That seemed like a nail in its coffin.

n/a FalmerbloodElixir 2017-05-17
Well the difference between a semi-joking word filter and directly editing the posts of users who disagree with you is pretty massive if you couldn't tell.
n/a ninjaofpatience 2017-05-17
Listen candy-ass, the only thing he changed was from people user name pinging him to username pinging the mods of the subreddit. It was a word filter, not directly editing
n/a FalmerbloodElixir 2017-05-17
No, actually, it wasn't a word filter.
n/a ninjaofpatience 2017-05-17
You are almost as retarded as the president
n/a FalmerbloodElixir 2017-05-17
Oh shit, absolutely nothing in that post says anything about a fucking word filter!
He edited a few comments that said "fuck u/spez" and replaced "u/spez" with the names of T_D mods, and then edited them back later. That isn't a word filter, dumbass. If when any time a person posted "fuck u/spez" and it got changed to "fuck u/t_dmodhere", then it would be a word filter. But what actually happened was he edited a few top comments. That's all.

n/a Socksockmaster 2017-05-17
I'll probably get a few downvotes for this, but you're right and it's really not unreasonable to expect a platform to be decent. It's easy to say to switch websites, but when you have a huge platform like reddit not only is it hard to find an alternative but it's even harder to get anyone else to follow to an otherwise inferior place. While the issues so far have been pretty tame, I think it's good that we hold big Internet forums responsible for their bullshit, rather than call dissenters nerds for using Reddit too much and actually caring.
Of course this is r/drama so I'm probably arguing for you against a bunch of ironic shitposters right now.
n/a MrsBoxxy 2017-05-17
Yeah, the reasons it's hard is because a huge community of people don't enjoy shitty toxic websites. The vast majority of reddit hated and disposed FPH and subs like T_D so when they're banned and their community goes "Off to this site we go every one!" no one follows them because no one cared for their company in the first place.
You don't create a super power website by letting toxic communities fester and take over.

freea loss of $72,000 annuallyn/a UpvoteIfYouDare 2017-05-17
It really depends on how much traffic they were receiving and it's geographic distribution. There was probably enough traffic that self-insuring was not an option. Cloud hosting shouldn't be used for a "hobby", anyways. It's an enterprise solution. The problem with Voat stems from the fact that they approached it like a hobby rather than a business.
n/a brokenskill 2017-05-17
Self-hosting no, but there are plenty of options between that and an enterprise cloud solution that would have been better and easier for them to manage with the little experience and purpose they have.
$6k/month is a painful lesson for someone when their Dreamspark etc discount stops.
n/a UpvoteIfYouDare 2017-05-17
Okay, I thought you were just shitting on cloud computing in general. In my opinion, it's definitely a use-case issue.
n/a Nerdiator 2017-05-17
The Linux VM's are still expensive. I have a Linux VM on Digital Ocean now for my asp.net website. It costs me 5$/month. The same thing would've costed me more than 50$/month on Azure. Other stuff on Azure is pretty cheap though, like the Blob Storage thingy is a major plus. SQL Server too!

I have laughed for ages about the fact that /v/MeanwhileOnReddit is the 8th most popular sub on Voat.
"Let's all fuck off to another site because Reddit sucks ass and we're never never never going back! And when we get there, we'll all just sit around jerking off to posts on Reddit!"
n/a snallygaster 2017-05-17
Holy shit, it's STILL active? Don't know if that's a testament to how inactive Voat is or how angry its users are that reddit exists.
n/a mizmoose 2017-05-17
Wow. I just took a deeper look.
They're just too stupid to see it.
n/a TheRealCJ 2017-05-17
Voat is like a bushpig. It's already been shot in the brain but has just enough dumb willpower to charge forwards and attempt to gore you.
n/a mizmoose 2017-05-17
That's a perfect analogy.
n/a dis_is_my_account 2017-05-17
Can confirm. Went to voat cuz I thought why not? More of a say in how the making of a site would go, I could still use Reddit. Didn't really care much for the whole free speech angle and all the conspiratards that were there but I could ignore them. Then wave after wave of shit people kept coming and I think what finally got me to leave was the whole shit over @she.
n/a Tergeron 2017-05-17
what was the @she thing? I missed this
n/a dis_is_my_account 2017-05-17
There were a handful of rational people during the whole thing but I knew that didn't matter if the owner wasn't going to be rational.

n/a zxcnzxjcknzxc 2017-05-17
He didn't say anything because he was on vacation. He also didn't remove her; she deleted her account after the pics were released, so the sub was left with (and still has) no owner.
n/a dis_is_my_account 2017-05-17
It might've been he was on vacation, I don't remember, but she definitely didn't delete her account and was removed as mod.

@she deleted her account.
Well, @she deleted her account and is leaving AskVoat. This is what y'all wanted, right?
n/a dis_is_my_account 2017-05-17

n/a JeansWest_NewJack 2017-05-17
I just visited voat and that description is spot on. Ok I didn't see anything gamergate related, but the number two post at "all" was from their pizzagate subvoat. It is essentially as if the_donald had their own version of reddit.
n/a TheRealCJ 2017-05-17
I guess we just found out what happens when 13 year olds attempt to run a social media site...
n/a Quantumtheori 2017-05-17
Yeah it crashes cuz 13 yr olds have no money
n/a captainpriapism 2017-05-17
well yeah most of the site is stuff youre not allowed to post on reddit, i assume thats why people went there instead
no point posting to a smaller audience if you can help it
n/a 1sagas1 2017-05-17
...but every one of those fits
n/a hexane360 2017-05-17
Buzz words aren't buzz words if they're still used to mean something. They become buzzwords when you suck the meaning out of it. Example: "right-wing propaganda" is a buzzword when you mean "something mildly pro-Trump", not when you mean "Hitler did nothing wrong"
n/a captainpriapism 2017-05-17
yeah like calling everything racist
n/a hexane360 2017-05-17
Yeah but just because some people use it as a buzzword doesn't automatically invalidate all uses. In this case, it refers to actual identifiable racism.
n/a captainpriapism 2017-05-17
overusing and misusing a word makes people sick of it
if you call something racist now most people will just roll their eyes and assume its blown out of proportion or just made up
the amount of faggy sjw types screaming "hate speech" at subs that left for voat makes me think most of it never existed
because they scream hate speech at literally everything
n/a hexane360 2017-05-17
So what do I call it? Super-racist? "Actually racist"?
Because without that alternative, it seems like you're just using that as an excuse to ignore racism
n/a captainpriapism 2017-05-17
you cant actually do much about it now because youve already blown your load calling not racist things racist
and thats what people will base your future claims on
"oh they probably just mean some dumb shit that isnt racist again, im not going to bother even looking"
its boy who cried wolf styles

What did I blow my load on specifically? Am I automatically a crazy SJW for using "racism" in a sentence?
n/a captainpriapism 2017-05-17
it was a general you, as in the group over reacting to stuff and diluting the meaning of words or the people that agree with them
depends what that sentence is
do you think it means "prejudice based on race" or "prejudice plus power"
n/a hexane360 2017-05-17
We've had one interaction together. So you're trying to prove I'm overreacting to this using the assumption that I'm overreacting to this. A+ circular logic. Next time maybe don't assume I'm in the group when I call something racist
n/a captainpriapism 2017-05-17
you asked me what we can do to call things racist now that people have diluted the meaning of it, instead of asking how we can stop people being oversensitive and fucking words up for everyone else
shit is implied
n/a hexane360 2017-05-17
I can't really stop people being over sensitive. Case in point: this conversation
n/a thefran 2017-05-17
People call everything you say racist because everything you say is racist
n/a captainpriapism 2017-05-17
except nobody actually calls me racist, they just rage and pout without explaining what their issue is
find me a racist thing ive said
n/a thefran 2017-05-17
Most pro-Trump things are right wing propaganda though.
n/a snallygaster 2017-05-17
What else do they have? That's pretty much it. If devoatees didn't want buzzwords thrown at them then they wouldn't exclusively post content that could be described using buzzwords.
n/a captainpriapism 2017-05-17
pretty sure its just a tiny unpopulated version of reddit
the whole "everyone there is doing hate speech" comes across pretty circlebrokey
n/a CaptainMemer 2017-05-17
You come across pretty gamergatery. End your life.
n/a captainpriapism 2017-05-17
gamergate set the stage for the american right to shit all over your face so im not really insulted
gg was always right and the good guys, and everyone who ever opposed them ended up exposed as pedophiles and scam artists
we changed american politics forever by killing identity politics and theres literally nothing you can ever do about it
sucked in hahahahahahah
n/a CaptainMemer 2017-05-17
Lol is this pasta?
n/a captainpriapism 2017-05-17
if you dont recognise it for what it is then youre even further gone than i thought
n/a snallygaster 2017-05-17
If you take a look at voat, pretty much the only communities still active are the ones that fit into those categories. Most of them are unlisted from /v/all and the front page still looks like a far-right shitshow most of the time.
n/a thefran 2017-05-17
If you make a community with the sole goal of being "witch hunt free", almost everyone in it will be a witch
n/a mizmoose 2017-05-17
The Buttheads In Charge have mentioned before that they've previously had offers from investors, but the potential investors wanted changes that weren't within Voat's vision.
n/a Baltorussian 2017-05-17
Well, just 30 minutes ago, r/T_D announced they are moving to VOAT...lmao
n/a alien122 2017-05-17

n/a snallygaster 2017-05-17
That is surprising, isn't it? It's not like his reputation can get much worse; he should go for it.
n/a a_normal_human 2017-05-17
So "angel investor" is a codeword for "someone to give us piles of money to piss away"?
I take it they have no revenue?
n/a mizmoose 2017-05-17
They have occasional funding drives. Last one was selling t-shirts and shit. They made enough to fund one month.
Then it trickled down to hundreds a month.
n/a dishragnarok 2017-05-17
the amount of redditers on 4chans pol since the election is hilarious enough. The hills are alive with the sounds of REEEEEEing. Mudlips vs shills all over
n/a omfgkevin 2017-05-17
Stupid move anyways, and I facepalm at all the morons donating. It's a reddit clone. What did he expect? Even reddit doesn't really make that much money last I read, and this one fucking guy expects to be able to hold up a website that just has a shitty userbase on it.
This should be a case study of what not to do.
n/a MG87 2017-05-17
I am shocked. SHOCKED that no one wants to advertise on a website known for racism and pedophilia.
n/a Dial_A_Dragon 2017-05-17
Companies advertise everywhere there are people. 4chan has ads. It's more likely:
a) Voat is tiny
b) poor business model (even Reddit doesn't make a profit)
n/a snallygaster 2017-05-17
It's probably a similar situation with Voat but with even less incentive for sponsors because it's much less trafficked than ED at its prime and doesn't really serve any purpose beyond being a group home for bigots.
n/a vnrmffk1 2017-05-17
Racism yes, CP no.
n/a WingOfWar 2017-05-17
Ftfy
Sure no "big" brand will go for it, but there's always someone out there who will advertise no matter the content.
Nevermind the content, though. Why invest in a site that somehow manages to be worse than an its already mediocre competitor?
n/a UserUnknown2 2017-05-17
Maybe make it so all of your traffic isn't from loonies, racists and jackasses and maybe you'll make money
n/a I_smell_like_bacon 2017-05-17
They need a reddit gold type of solution. Maybe Voat Asbestos.
n/a TruthPains 2017-05-17
Can make fun of fatties, minorities, and liberals in the Voat lounge!
n/a Kerankou 2017-05-17
They need a final solution.
n/a Forseti69 2017-05-17
Maybe if they didn't use shitty technology like C#, they might still be around.

Have fun.
n/a Sharkaddy2 2017-05-17
I'm kind of glad Donald got elected. Hillary with a republican congress would have been a disaster. Destroying the entire republican party in a single administration is a masterstroke, and it would have been impossible with Hillary in power.
Thank you for the inevitable impeachment hearings. That's gonna be some good TV.
n/a LeftistsToTheLions 2017-05-17
... why do you think us right-wingers elected Trump?
You guys know little about us. Keep shouting KKK.
n/a Sharkaddy2 2017-05-17
Just curious, was this supposed to be some super-intimidating "Ya'll don't know what we've got in store fer ya" thing?
No one is buying it. Conservatives are so outnumbered that they can only hang onto power with gerrymandering and manipulation of the electoral college. The popular vote is forever out of their reach.

Cool now we can have fatpeoplehate and pizzagate drama again.
n/a captainpriapism 2017-05-17
literally none of the "lets copy reddit" sites ever become popular because people are lazy and complacent
people get really weird about voat for some reason though
n/a TheRealCJ 2017-05-17
probably because it was started as a direct reaction to Reddit no longer allowing users to do an say whatever they wanted without fear of consequence.
n/a captainpriapism 2017-05-17
bit of a difference between not being able to do and say whatever you want without consequence, and banning certain beliefs or ideas
n/a TheRealCJ 2017-05-17
No, it's literally what it is. If you do or say something that the site doesn't like, the consequence is having your account or community removed. Voat users disliked the idea that they couldn't do or say exactly what they wanted without any consequence at all.
n/a captainpriapism 2017-05-17
youre framing "doing whatever you want" as something sinister instead of just saying something though
if someone gets banned for disagreeing on immigration for instance they havent done anything wrong or malicious, theyve just given an opinion that certain people decided was not allowed
these rules are always misguided and abused
consider that in the future someone will be in charge that decides your ideas are abhorrent and not allowed, what do you plan to do then? withdraw from society?
n/a TheRealCJ 2017-05-17
Yeah, except "I don't like immigration" isn't something that gets banned, but "NIGGERS NIGGERS NIGGERS" and "FUCK FAT PEOPLE LET'S DOXX THEM" do.
Stop pretending that the banning or r/coontown, r/jailbait, and r/fatpeoplehate is anything but Reddit removing the worst of the worst of the most toxic communities.
The fact you conflate the two says more about you than it does about Reddit.
n/a captainpriapism 2017-05-17
cringe lol i bet you felt really sorry for ellen pao too
really helped didnt it, its a great site now
and its not about those subs, its about the ones that people lumped in with them because theyre loathe to discussion and introspection
sort of like how idiots scream nazi at everyone who isnt a communist, everything that wasnt sjw friendly was a hate sub
nigga youre the one conflating everything with coontown like youre negareddit personified
n/a TheRealCJ 2017-05-17
Uh, the banning of coontown and FPH were literally the catalysts for the formation of voat. we're talking about Voat. Ipso facto.
n/a captainpriapism 2017-05-17
its funny to me that people always lump in fph because it wasnt even that bad, just the owners of imgur bitched because they were made fun of
nobody was actually doxed or whatever
also voat was formed because people started thinking the admins here were politically motivated and about to delete everything they didnt like in a moral panic
which isnt too far fetched given their history
sure it started with a few unsavoury subs, but theyre known for overreach and listening to the complaints of crazy people too
n/a PM_ME_HAIRLESS_CATS 2017-05-17

n/a jhra 2017-05-17
Any indication on an asking price?
n/a Chanchumaetrius 2017-05-17
Circa $3.50
n/a shitlordcaligula_2 2017-05-17
I still have my voat account from the first wave of the FPH exodus. Decided that I'm more of an )r/fatlogic kinda guy and left. By then coontown had taken over the site.
n/a turtlesrprettycool 2017-05-17
That's what killed the site imo. It was decent for a while, but then the coontown people came over and ruined it. Anyone that wasn't insane would look at the front page of nothing but white nationalist bull shit, and immediately hit the back button.
n/a RemoveTheTop 2017-05-17
Hint: they're 75% the same people
n/a shitlordcaligula_2 2017-05-17
I wouldn't say so.
FPH, for all the drama it caused, was never racist. People on there talked all the time about how qualities you can't change about yourself, like skin color shouldn't be shamed by society, but eating too much sho. Politically speaking the sub is about an even split of left/right, not unlike this sub.
Plus, a good chunk of racists are obese, both the hicks as well as neckbeards.

considering Voat users love highly illegal porn so much, the perverts who use that site could just organise a darknet garage sale of horrendous stuff and all the bitcoin raised could go to cover the costs?
just a suggestion...
