a significant proportion of the casual users/non-mods/lurkers are pretty dire, although I'm hesitant to get involved in atnorman's anti-lurker/take the sub private mindset too. honestly i never found it that smug tbh, at least to begin with, and at least to the extent that plenty of the smug shit is pretty clearly tongue-in-cheek, whereas /r/drama has a full-blown and pretty explicit attitude of blurring the lines between tongue-in-cheek, ironic, sarcastic, and deeply felt personal commitments, which a decent portion of the regulars use to shit on anybody deemed a non-insider - you know, schoolyard or fratboy shit to as nth a degree as possible - which badphil never gave me the impression of being.
Still, maybe that's my insiders' perspective. i discovered badphil when i already had a reasonable grounding in philosophy, i have a BA in philosophy, and it isn't hard for me to separate the wheat from the chaff. And, although given that that's my limited perspective, i don't really get the R1 thing as being a true delineator of badecon from badphil. From my point of view, the R1 thing just lets people who know a bit of undergrad economics to shitpost about stuff they know little or nothing about in the renowned shitposting thread. I only know enough about econ to separate eve from adam in the most basic way, but i certainly know enough about politics and philosophy to know that that rule doesn't exactly separate the enlightened from whoever, and i think badecon's more introspective and reflective users would agree with that. I certainly don't think that the pro-learns attitude actually allows people to do much else but upvote or downvote any view that they already hold or disagree with, and i think that some of the discussions i've seen and had in that subreddit rather reflect that fact.
But then even before i knew what reddit was i always suspicious of the whole "sunlight is the best disinfectant" idea. ban the heretics etc.
