Eh, you could say that the vast majority of speech and debate events are useless. Cross-ex, domestic extemp, foreign extemp and those types. Even the lincoln-Douglas method isn't really used on the political level. To serious post, these events develop more skills than just talking fast, they show you how to structure an argument and how to argue in favor something you don't believe in. If you can see those 40 gallon tubs, those are filled with information to be used to refute the opponents points, that's why they bring them. Its mainly just critical thinking and analysis used to argue for whatever the case is that period. Again though, I was doing a lot of drugs and didn't take it seriously.
