The show's narrative is that petrol cars will always be superior so they show how "faulty" electric and hybrid cars can be. In the case of the Tesla, there's also the added bonus to make fun of American craftsmanship. That narrative is also why Clarkson almost always beat the other two when the race was between his car and their various forms of mass transit.

To play devils advocate, they are also anti-petrol who gets way more government welfare than Tesla. I prefer Tesla getting the subsidies than the oil companies which currently get most.
I'm not a TeslaBro and I think they are overreacting, but the article states that Top Gear staged the break downs differently than with the petrol cars to serve their narrative and passed it off as an objective test.

That's just the main "drive" motor. You forget how many other motors/speakers/ect there are in a Tesla that do use rare earth metals. Additionally the amount of ore in a Tesla is roughly 30% greater than in a traditional ICE vehicle because of the structure (aluminium and titanium) and the battery (Nickel, aluminium, cobalt, ect).
