Is Star Trek ready for female or minority characters? Or are they pulling a Ghostbusters to deflect criticism? Scott Bakula wishes he had a tan in /r/startrek.

Yes.

Let's ask William Shatner.

/u/WilliamShatner do you think the new Trek series is off to a good start?

It’s pretty garbage for a plethora of reasons, but I think the worst part is that the pilot episode amounted to “Let’s talk it out with the Klingons” with the main character going “No KILL KILL KILL”

Yeah that’s so Trek

It's not about race, the show just isn't that good. I've only watched the first two episodes but are well really supposed to believe that the main character is going to commit mutiny, get sentenced to life in prison, and then go on to command a starship.

Plus, the show is supposed to take place before TOS but the ships have technology in them that far surpasses what we saw in TNG. Breaks the immersion a bit, at least for me.

The Orville is the best ST since DS9

The Orville

That's a funny way to spell "Galaxy Quest".

Galaxy Quest: The Not-Animated Series

Better?

I've only seen one episode but I liked it. Need to watch more.

Ep1 felt a little too slapstick/family guyish for a ST show, but I've liked the rest.

I barely watched star trek but even I remember that shit has been maximum diversity since the nineties. They've had female and minority leads since TNG haven't they?

there's already been a black captain and a woman captain, so I don't really see how they're "groundbreaking" in any way

Now they're doing it and the minorities are more proud of the things she didn't accomplish, like being a minority, instead of the ones she did, like getting on the show.

It seems to just be a marketing angle. This whole article and Malfoy's comments seem to be designed to manufacture a "controversy" and use social media outrage to raise visibility of the show, à la Ghostbusters 2016.

Malfoy

(((Slytherins))) amirite.

well, my buddy who's more of a trek fan than I'll ever be told me that Orville is doing a better job of being trek than trek, and I trust him with his brand of geekiness.

I loved Stargate sg-1 in my time, but by the time of universe it was "teen drama in a space box"

I like how they pretend reading youtube comments hasn't always been akin to swimming in an open sewer.

If you hear this and say "oh, you're talking about me" then you're probably racist. If you hear this and say, "well obviously they're not talking about me" then your comment makes no sense. Because you're not racist, right?

Right, people who are not racist never get called racist with ulterior political motives, and thus they never have any reason to suspect that people are doing so.

Sure thing.

You rang?

Another fucking one of these.

Literally nobody is actually hating on the show "because of the black female lead". The people making this accusation are deliberately and maliciously making this shit up, and to support it they will point at people that are obviously not doing any such thing, and deliberately and maliciously pretend that they suddenly can't comprehend English well enough to understand the real objection (pandering).

I don't even need to check this because it's the same goddamned shit every fucking time.

But I hate it because of the black female lead.

Wow, wrong again. Update your Bayesian priors now, nerd.

Username game on point tbh.

Effortposting get the bullet too.

Totally get what you're saying. We are actively cleaning up the thread, and most of you all are being civil and respectful, like Trek has taught us ;)

I think you are making shit up and that there never was any "alt-right" presence in the thread.

It still boggles my mind that there are racist Trekkies. It goes against the very fabric of what Star Trek stands for.

.

I don't know about these specific people, but there are plenty of racist trek fans. There are also a lot of libertarian trek fans. They yell about socialism being terrible and then watch a show about a socialist society.

Hey /u/callahandy and /u/Andrewcujo all those people who watch Game Of Thrones must be royalists right?
