Millennials feel insulted when they're told that hard work and dedication leads to success

DOn't you know, its "luck"?

Yeah, see, you won the "birth lottery" by not being born in a third world shithole; QED: everything you have is by luck.

This, but unironically.

Picking an employable major is also luck based.

Hardly.

No shit

Oh, would you have preferred a sarcasm tag? Fuck you.

No need for that kind of language here

I personally know a philosophy major, it’s pretty hard for me to believe people actually spend money on that

I mean if I got to have Wittgenstein as a prof it might be worth it.

But now you just get some moron hired to fix the faculty diversity quotas and it's pretty retarded.

Looking at Hollywood, they are probably right.

Welcome to reddit where your failures are mostly society's fault, and your success is mostly luck.

I feel that this is only something people who weren't alive under much better circumstances.

People didn't suddenly get lazy, stupid and shitty in 2007. An economic crash that this country never recovered from happened, and the people in charge have been blaming young people for their own failures of leadership ever since.

I'd say blaming your failures on something that happened a decade ago is a pretty bad way to start your climb to the top, but I'm no money expert

Yeah...I'm 28. I'm also one of the least successful (wage wise) among most of my friends. God forbid I take personal responsibility for my circumstances / future and don't blame others / society for my short comings.

posting in /r/Drama

wondering what went wrong

\>not using meme arrows in a post about meme arrows while ironically fucking up the escape code

I graduated in 2009 and every single one of my friends from college has a six figure job at bare minimum coming out. It was harder for us, but there were still plenty of opportunities.

Sure but does that mean we just shit on those who haven't made it? Doesn't seem to make sense. Yea there are some opportunities but like anything else there will be those on the losing end. And at this time there are more on the losing end.

The only people I know on the losing end are the losers. Even people who passed high school with a 55 have good jobs.

Everyone I've met without a job have been known to be lazy assholes that can't hold a job because they're shitheads. It's a solid trend.

There's so much going on with this statement and a lot of details missing from it

Sure it does. . This is America. Once you get yours, fuck everyone else. That's what made this county great. Sink or swim bitch.

Alternatively - society has become more fair, which makes it more of a meritocracy.

In the bad old days, a rich idiot could easily succumb to various vices and addictions and have little support. Now they just do a bit of therapy. OK, a tiny number are so fucked up they can't be cured, but it's only a small number.

Schools have become more consistent, and better. A uni education might not be perfect, but they actually try to teach shit now.

Healthcare is way better. You are far less likely to grow up crippled by some terrible childhood disease, and even if you have some medical issues there's a lot better treatment and management.

I could go on, but basically all the unfair shit that life throws at you has been mitigated a lot more, so it's things like talent, genetics, and being well raised that count for a lot more.

Yeah that's why the president of the united States is someone who had to fight every step of the way to earn the position based purely on merit.

This but unironically.

This sounds pretty much made up. You don't even touch on the sociological affect of being well to do, which makes sense cause it wouldn't help.

This sounds pretty much made up

No, it's the internet, making crap up is against the rules.

Are we making points or not? Why can't anything have any significance to you millennials? This is why you're all poor

of course every response to this post completely fails to understand the idea that "harder" doesnt equal "impossible"

theres been wage stagnation for decades, but nah, the kids today just dont wanna work

I'm not like those other millennials.

Welcome to reality. It's shit.

I've literally never heard of 'survivorship bias' until reddit started parroting it in response to every assertion that maybe they should work harder. Isn't it great how you can just hide behind vague social studies concepts to avoid personal responsibility?

what can’t you hide behind to avoid personal responsibility though

Well you can also hide behind video games and other distractions, but those don't allow you to be indignant to your parents and other authority figures. Much less appealing.

The appeal is pretty clear. When you hear "none of your failures are your fault! It's the system/society/other people that are stacked against you!" it makes people feel better about their lack of success

So what you're saying is, everything is society's fault, and we as individuals never need to take responsibility for anything? Yeah, I like that. I didn't do anything wrong because I can't do anything wrong because we're all just products of our environment, bouncing around like marbles in the game of Hungry-Hungry Hippos that is our random and cruel universe. Yeah, it's not my fault. It's society. Everything is because of society! Hooray! Everything is meaningless! Nothing I do has consequence!"

started parroting it in response to every assertion that maybe they should work harder.

Yeah that makes no sense. Survivorship bias usually refers to people giving specific non-standard advice about why they achieved success like aligning their chakras each morning. Now if someone said the key to their success was phoning it in and being a dick to everyone that is a little more suspect.

I saw a bunch of people invoking it over a video of Morgan Freeman giving advice on how to succeed - work hard, network with others, live healthy, etc. Apparently that's too much to handle for the underachieving geniuses of reddit.

People took the “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” thing too far so now people have gone to the other extreme of “success is literally impossible and anyone who isn’t poor was just completely lucky”. Luck is important but it’s not the only factor.

That being said, I really wonder if the job market is as bad as they say it is compared to older times. I mean yes, the economy is not as good as it used to be, but at the same time finding and applying for jobs is SIGNIFICANTLY easier than it’s ever been in history, I can apply to hundreds of jobs in less than an hour thanks to job websites and apps. Yeah, my success rate on a large scale is low (either due to lack of qualifications, the interview just not going well, or the company being a scam that I wouldn’t ever consider), but who cares so long as I still get some job offers? Even if only 5 companies out of 100 want me, that’s still 5 jobs to choose from.

In all fairness, it's demonstrably not true anymore. There are too few decent paying jobs, and too many people to fill them. For most, hard work and dedication will go unrewarded as a simple matter of economics.

Millennials feel insulted by boomers who pretend that young people today have the same opportunities that they had 40 years ago.

Well, its not that hard work and dedication are irrelevant. That are a necessary, but not sufficient, condition. In order to succeed, you either need to know people that matter, lie, cheat, and steal your way to the top, and/or open up your asshole.

Offering bussy for pay is legal, but paying for it is not. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Asking for bussy is also frowned upon, apparently.

But we can still take it, eh comrade? huehuehue

fairness

gtfo with that shit over here

If you don't want to take a risk and move somewhere that there is a demand for work that's on you bucko. All the boomers where I lived moved far away from home to get work when they were kids. I know zero unemployed welders. plumbers, engineers, biologists, business students, or even labourers. They went to where the work is.

But but but...I was told I could get any job I want my my liberal arts degree and by double major in feminist inter-sectional transgender-racial studies gives me a unique perspective to bring to a business environment.

Area I live in has <4% unemployment which means my customers are basically scraping the bottom of the barrel for entry level workers. They will hire you if you're an ex-con, a HS dropout, offer benefits after a probationary period, offer overtime, and there's room to move up and learn skills like running equipment or maintenance. Don't have a car? Many of my coworkers will give you a ride until you can get a few checks and buy your own clunker (or at least pay your fines).

Turnover is stupid high because a lot of guys in their 20's, especially white guys, haven't worked a day in their life and puss out when they're standing outside in the elements.

It's difficult to find people who show up sober or don't disappear on a bender after they get their first check.

It's difficult to find people who can't do simple addition and subtraction or can operate a production job where you have to move relatively quickly.

I'm as bleeding heart as most liberals, but don't blame society because you can't do 3rd grade math and refuse to move from Bumfuck, Nowheresville where there's no work.

Area I live in

What kind of area is that, out of interest? You don't specify.

I live in this type of area I'm from SLC.

However my hometown is in ohio and it is a really small town and very hard to find a job. I guess it does depend somewhat on location. However in cities I've noticed it is easier to find work than bumfuck egypt.

Tell them to stop snorting Oxy and move.

And here I thought /r/drama was two steps toward doxxing me. I should shit post more.

I live in western WA and work in the timber industry. It's a great line of work for reinforcing the worst types of stereotypes about white folks.

not calling you a liar,

but i only ever read this bullshit about "can't find enough people for the job" on the internet.

guess what, most people behave rationally out of their self interest, these jobs you speak of more than likely offer shit pay and shit conditions making it "not worth it" in a real sense.

but i only ever read this bullshit about "can't find enough people for the job" on the internet.

Go outside more, dip shit.

employers who pay shit get shitty employees

WOW what surprises wow wew

Read my post again.

I'm also sorry about your brain disability.

if shitty jobs with shitty pay aren't attracting workers who cares?

let the brown immigrants do them, since they literally are desperate for any work.

if lazy citizen kids don't want to do the jobs and feed off the welfare state, good for them.

Feed off the pork barrel.

Thanks for teaching me about labor markets, incel.

Exact same here in Iowa

Same situation in Alaska, a few years ago the salmon plants could not hire enough people to keep up with the fish caught.

Pull your pumpkin spice latte out of your ass and go get a job. This is why you guys are such fucking twats, you expect everything to just be available around you all the time at your own fucking convenience. The world does not and has never worked that way.

Millennials feel insulted Why the mother fuck do people keep reporting FEELINGS like they fucking matter? You fee fees are your own god-damned problem to deal with and should not be the concern of society or the media. HTFU and get a god-damned job you limp-wristed, commie, pinko pansy.

lol u mad

Lmao found the loser

Imagine being the biggest loser in an r/drama thread

You're like the economic version of an incel. For every man/human that's out there who has given up on women/the job market, that's one less man/human I have to compete with while I'm out making a living and traveling and beating off in the woods.

Are you ironicposting or just retarded?

I come from a country where success is viewed as a positive and not as something that happens when you're born under the Sign of Darkness formed by mercury, saturn, and venus

lol what a piece of shit it's his fault i'm poor lmfao

What I’m saying is that there is no shortage of opportunity for success in Canada. However you can’t expect to have women’s study degree and make 6 figures. Pick careers where the labour demand is high and you’ll more than just get by,

/u/analyst_84 gets it. But fuck you anyway.

Suicide is easier.

Trade schools are the way to go, you can make just as much if not more money for a significantly cheaper education, I considered becoming a stenographer (court reporter) because I knew it would be less difficult than getting a four year degree.

Ah yes, the "I did well and worked hard to get here! If you all just buckled down..." Somehow I doubt that. I wouldn't know however, as a graduate in the arts means 'will work for exposure' for some reason.

really sucks that someone put a gun to your head and forced you to spend years on an art degree.

Lol if only. It's more like 'you're abysmal at anything that someone would actually pay for'. I was great at dance, art and shit like that. Math, science, tech and stats? Not...so much. It's not fair but it's not exactly a shock that artists = on average pretty fucking poor, especially now. Who wants to pay for an artists when you can nab something off of shutterstock?

well, at least you have good candor.

If you're ever looking for a career chang I recommend B2B sales in the healthcare or tech industry (not a telemarketing center but an actual sales department for B2B products/services. you'll still have to do a lot of calls). I've seen so many people with the odds seemingly stacked against them (short, ugly, otherwise unpopular, empty or unrelated resume) get in the door on a good interview and build a great career in sales through being constantly positive, driven, and willing to learn.

I did sales for awhile but I got too pissed off after 10+ years. I'm glad I work somewhere where sweats and stuff are totally fine though, and I don't need to fake-smile to customers.

As someone who has never done drugs, let me tell you all about drugs.

Maybe the government in Canada should stop worrying over the feelings of lazy people and fix their shitty infrastructure or address their growing heroin epidemic

With the magic of fentanyl hopefully the opiod epidemic will take care of itself.

WTF I hate immigrants now

I always did

Fucking Europeans murdering my proud Native American ancestors

This shit is hilarious to me, since i know a number of families who moved here from Asia in the 70s and 80s, some from active warzones, each one led by a tough-as-nails bitch of a tiger mom who brought everybody over, one by one, while working 90+ hours a week in shitty food service jobs. Oh and some of them were from Vietnam, and had pulled their entire family out of the aftermath of the Vietnam War, as it happened, fall of Saigon style.

They're literally all wealthy now. Every single one of them, and all their kids, own homes, cars, businesses, all of them. Well, except the fathers, since again, all of the tiger moms had naked mole rat husbandos who either ran off or preferred to drink and gamble instead of forcing the kids to take their piano lessons. And the reason why is simple: no drinking / drugs, no wasteful spending, work / school like a madman, and never settle for second best.

These ladies got spat at, called "chink bitch" etc all the time, got ripped off regularly, lived in the deep ghetto where bullets ended up in their cars and walls, and still made it. Hell one of em never even had a bank account, but she did have a shotgun to defend her house where she kept her filthy lucre.

So /u/analyst_84 I salute you. And fuck these weak ass syrup-loving white bitches, mayocide when? MAYOCIDE NOW!

truly an inspiring comment right here

thanks famalam i do like me the slant-eyed ones. unfortunately i didn't marry into one of those families, since i'm a dumbshit honkey who chose "love" over money.

free life protip: money every single fucking time.

i just had to make that choice, i choose money... for now anyway

thanks for the tip

good job, you'll thank me (and yourself) when swimming in your money pool. i mean, hopefully she/he is at least a 5 or 6 also, really kinda sucks when you're walking around with the elephant man

Sounds like Americans.

Damn. Thank you for recognizing how hard my people worked for their dream in America after escaping communism on a small boat!

/u/CarnistHappyCamp was clearly not talking about your people.

What do you mean?:o

I'm being mean on /r/Drama

Call me a mayo or something.

Oooohhh... uh... Fucking non-spicy eater.;;

My doctor told me to avoid certain foods or it would trigger my digestive disorder! You're very insensitive!

you seriously need to kick that up a notch. how about "capitalist pigdog babykiller" or something

are you cuban? i wasn't talking about cubans..

yeah, but they post on /r/hapas now

Nah only their kids do

not mine, but then again my kids aren't fucking losers.

Same shit happens in America and is why I don't believe that it's just poverty or bad schools which cause certain demographics to do poorly. You have poor immigrants, often completely uneducated themselves and with no English, moving to the shittiest ghettos. 20 years later, their kids are doing great, the neighborhood has gentrified, and those groups are considered "white."

Its almost like you can get ahead by working hard, studying, saving your money, not doing drugs, and not committing crimes .... otherwise known as "acting white

Not doing drugs?? Screw that mayocide now

DON'T REVEAL OUR SECRET

i'm talking about america here. god only knows what the frostbacks do with their immigrant hordes. i think they build mosques for some of them and sell their houses to the others at exorbiant prices.

If they think being poor in a developed country is bad, wait till they see the rest of the world.

Smells like diversity hiring policy helped these guys get to where they are.

I’m a white male

Life in Canada sounds like Goldeneye on 'Agent' difficulty.

Downside is you have to live around leafs

I'm a leaf-blower.

/u/jotasaurus does hearing about the success of others remind you of what a failure you are?

Keep Yourself Safe

I do well for myself, thanks for thinking of me though. :)

Literally Reddit: the country.

These days, employers RIF people without any consideration that the more people they cut, the longer things take and the resulting work is shittier quality. And when that happens, they blame it on everyone but themselves.

It's also true that the harder and more efficiently people work, it almost always ends up being handed even more work.

No employer I've ever had has done that. Maybe you should work at unskilled jobs that don't involve a fryer.

Mr. Lube and shop bitch jobs are out there. I pushed a broom, emptied garbages, cleaned trucks and torqued oil pans down for 3 years before I moved up the chain.

That is the employment equivalent of posting bussy. It works.

Just in case you meant to reply to my comment...

I can assure you that what I posted is pretty much a fact of life in the corporate world.

Yes. Can confirm. Do more with less and get rid of all the experienced people and wonder why everything gets fucked up... blame middle management and then "right size" again.

It's also true that the harder and more efficiently people work, it almost always ends up being handed even more work.

I see someone else works in a corporate environment

Yep. It happened again today, too. Boss said [thing] would be better handled by [people who do a certain job]. The problem is that I [as a person doing a certain job], also have [real work] to do in addition to [things].

And lately I haven't been able to spend as much time as I need doing my [real job] because I spend too much time on [things].

The millenial term is legit kind of stupid now but people use it as some sort of default "young adult" category. People who are just out of college in 2017 are not like me and my peers and they need to get off my lawn.

I'm 32. I don't own a home but I have a nice enough income and stable job. When I was 23 I was all about this "life is hard for us waahhhhhhh" shit. Course we had an actual recession then, I don't know what the new kids' excuse is in 2017.

Like, shit sucks as a twenty something. You never have enough money. You work shit jobs. Your parents are on your junk about how successful they were at your age. Blah Blah Blah.

You just gotta buckle up, go to work, expand your skills and always strive to be better. If you're not a total and complete fuck up you WILL find your something that works out for you.

dont buy a home. ... total money pit. Also, don't have kids.

Know what's a bigger money pit? Rent, it's like buying a home but you dont have a home.

But you don;t have to fix shit or pay property taxes.

So what you're saying is it's better to pay someone else to pay repairmen and the government, than to pay them yourself and cut out the middleman and his margins?

That's fair, man. You do you.

What next? Are we not going to call alt-right Nazis so we don't hurt their feelings?

You Yanks are so retarded with your bootstrapping nonsense. Third World peasants work much harder than you and are still Third World peasants, and always will be. You seem to be happy to be financially raped by a tiny percentage of plutocrats just so you can feel morally superior to the person below you in the rat race. This idiotic hyper-individualism is why alone in the Western World you haven't got a proper healthcare system or a social democratic party, and why you think hundreds of mass shootings a year are just normal occurences. You're being systematically robbed, overtaxed and exploited by a bunch of rich cunts, and you respond by asking to get fucked even harder. You are the children of the world, laughed at by everybody else for your naive antics.

Which yanks you talking about boi? This is leaf drama yo

Well, the people in the link are Canadians. They do have a functional healthcare systems and don't have a mass shooting epidemic.

Through the magic of unobtanium rivets we have prevented thousands of deaths.

Quiet, Pajeet.

But they are our rich cunts. You get f***** over by Rich cunts in another country Plus, we can all become rich cunts someday over here

I was driving down Mulholland today. Nothing but Mexican gardeners, slaving away on rich Hollywood (((people's))) lawns. Hundreds of them. Not another soul in sight.

remember when "millennials" were going to be a global force for good instead of a generation of electronics addicts used as grist for the wheel of capitalism

No. They were always whiny, needy little snowflakes, sheltered in positive affirmance bubbles by their helicopter parents giving out participation trophies.

We didn’t win the lottery, no one gave us any hand outs.

u/analyst_84

You're the child of immigrants, and were allowed to settle in a prosperous first-world country. For many people, that might as well be winning the lottery.

I absolutely agree. But many of my the online posters seem to think they’re living in some post apocalyptic dystopia.

Oh definitely, I wasn't really taking issue with the rest of your post. Part of that "winning the lottery" feeling is realizing a lot of folks really have no idea what actual hardship is.

The American Dream comes from a country with high wages up to the mid seventies due to chronic labor shortage and whatnot, and the most easy-mode middle class post-WW2 to the mid seventies. But nothing lasts forever.

I know the linked drama is Canada but I think the US has influenced Canada somewhat.
