[Discussion] Is anyone else so used to online toxicity that you're unable to relate to normies who view hateful comments online as this horrible problem in society that needs to be fixed?

178  2018-03-17 by MasterLawlz

I don't want to classify this as a "serious post" because the topic is stupid but it's something I'm at least curious about.

I have a friend who got mad at me because she said how horrible her and other women's experiences have been on tinder and shared some screenshot that someone else posted online of a really angry and hostile tinder message. I said (casually, not meaning to troll or nothing) that the message was equivalent to a casual conversation on Xbox Live. She wasn't happy with me, lol.

Plus, I've probably been told to kill myself or in some other way insulted on this forum a few hundred times. So, when people talk about online toxicity being some kind of national tragedy, I legitimately cannot relate. I thought it was a feature, tbh. I hope I'm never unable to connect to the internet and receive messages from people I've never met telling me they hope I commit suicide. I don't know how I would fill that hole in my life. I guess worst case scenario, I could become a door-to-door salesman or an employee of the IRS.

I really wonder how much of this is because of the gender ratios in online gaming. I'm pretty sure by the time that most American boys are 14, they've probably heard just about every insult under the sun while playing Halo. By the time they're old enough to regularly go on forums or dating sites, the insults just feel like a given. Most women who regularly play video games play either simple ones on their phones or single-player games, they don't get the same bizarre experiences that young men do.

Demod your account.

Yeah I don't know, I'm pretty confused as to why anyone cares. I used to get death threats daily back in the day on wow and I get more insane pms from time to time on Reddit.

They have 0 impact on me and I couldn't possibly imagine caring.

Totally agree. Whoever thought that the internet was going to be a space where everyone was polite and nice to each other all the time? How would you even enforce that without ruining people's free expression and ability to speak their honest opinions?

Ten years ago or so I used to turn on my computer and be regularly greeted with death threats and insults. It was very amusing to me, I liked the novelty of when someone would use a creative turn of phrase. Literally 100% of people never followed through on their threats. They were all internet tough guys, keyboard warriors who were doing the equivalent of the Navy Seal copypasta.

There's another aspect of insults when it comes to guys: Roasting or taking the piss. When you're a guy, you often insult your friends and mock them, it's actually a sign of acceptance. This is a big thing in the UK and Ireland, and I know it's done in America as well.

So, depending on context, being insulted or mocked is not some soul-destroying suicide-inducing experience, and the motives of those who want to "clean up the internet" are highly suspect. What such people really want is censorship.

Whenever I see people online say that they got death threats as a serious concern I know they're normies.

The internet is not real.

I can obviously relate to people who are mad about how toxic the internet is, my main gripe in that is framed as only one or a few groups being toxic when almost every group I can think of has their fair share of shithouse people. This is also framed around social mores, that are synonymous with social or economic class and geographic factors that complicate things further as to who has the right to determine the style of discourse.

Maybe there should be voluntary sections where toxic wankstains, edgy teens and people with personality disorders can have their fun while not running into people who would be genuinely upset by that stuff.

Plus, I've probably been told to kill myself or in some other way insulted on this forum a few hundred times.

I would think it'd be in the thousands by now.

Seriously though, please keep yourself safe

eh, women are just fucking pussies. "oh my, a man was mean to me on tinder", so just block him and talk to one of the other 500 chads you matched with you dumb fuckin roastie. do they really to get those extra validation points from their stupid ass male orbiters (you) because some dumbass swore at them?

I've been on the 'net since before it became the monstrosity it is today.. The toxicity has always been there, no different now than it was then. The only difference is today, people are so overly sensitive they'll find even the littlest thing to be outraged or offended.

I don't know if it should be called funny or sad, but it seems some people need to be outraged or offended as a way to validate their existence - so much that they go out and look for shit to be outraged about.

I guess I've been at it so long I've developed an immunity to all the shit, so I too cannot relate to this outrage culture.

I have a friend who plays Halo online with his son, so that when he says 'I've shagged your Mum' it's actually true.

Hahahahahahahaha How The Fuck Is Cyber Bullying Real Hahahaha Nigga Just Walk Away From The Screen Like Nigga Close Your Eyes Haha

You are either born a sociopath or live long enough to become one. There is no escape apart from the ol 'Tsshk Tsshk... Bang' routine

I have a friend who got mad at me because she said how horrible her and other women's experiences have been on tinder

That is like saying you had a bad experience in some greasy kebab shop in Leeds. In life, you usually get what you pay for. Considering tinder is free, you should tailor your expectations accordingly.

No I don't have autism .

I've been on the internet since 1996. Everything that was going to hurt my feelings already came up in some IRC channel, usenet group, or forum long ago. I have a hardened internet tough guy shell that's not going to get rustled by some retard on the internet. The only thing that really bothers me at this point is really fucked up gore videos that I purposely avoid.

me_irl

Astute analysis, men and women are different. Why don't you publish your findings in Scientific American: Retard Edition

that wasn't even the point of my post at all

are you dumb

You asked why your female friend and all of her female friends are upset with mean comments online when you and your guy friends are okay with it. I guess if you have trouble with critical thinking, you might come to the conclusion it is due to some vague concept of "toxicity" (?) instead of what it actually is

Gender isn't the only factor, I just thought it was relevant to bring up. Plus my point wasn't "lul women and men are different" but rather asking if different gaming experiences could explain some of this.

Also, you're turning this into a seriouspost. Not cool, this is /r/drama.

Plus, I've probably been told to kill myself or in some other way insulted on this forum a few hundred times

Have you wondered if the case is that the reason you've been told this is only because you're insufferable, and that it's not representative of anything else?

I have wondered that before but immediately dismissed it because I know deep down you all love me.

You're telling me you actually wrote this and it's not just some retarded copy pasta you found somewhere you wanted us all to laugh at?

Yes, I might even submit it to my English professor.

You should kill yourself first

I don't think I'll get extra credit for that

You'll be forever immortalized in the lore of r/drama; you might even get this sub banned! Surely that's worth more than some grade.

I would unironically do that except then I wouldn't get to see the controversy over it

So kill someone, exchange your eyes, fingers and teeth with them then go incognito

Just delete your account, none of us will know the difference.

Faking could be just as good though. But any one of us could do that.

Maybe it's time to dust off the old GIMP...

Damn dude be careful. She's probably one of those liberal SJW Feminazi professors who will give you an F for not being PC.

This is a retarded worldview. OP’s friend isn’t angry because le women are le sensitive. Women can be vile af (and they are. praise bussy). It’s because it’s some guy 15 minutes away and not some anonymous faggot on 4chan. You have the privilege of being a fuggo no one wants to stalk

You should make sure to tag all of your posts with the proper [DELUSION] flair. It'll make it easier for those of us who aren't mentally ill to filter your asinine opinions.

Yes

Yes, I have been posting online for the past 18-ish years now and I am completely desensitized to anything remotely "controversial". Most of the time I respond with some iteration of "who cares" or "I've seen that before".

This also goes into what I call the "power of words" like you mentioned. You know how many times I've been told to go "fucking kill myself" on the internet before? Loads. Does it affect me at all? No. Words are meaningless to me, yet Its culturally discouraged to for example, swear in public. What is the point of this? Who actually cares how I speak? It's not like it is hurting anyone. My mother for example would call it a sign of "respect" to speak politely, yet that seems to be a one-way street - she is apparently 100% justified to swear at me whenever she wants.

I guess my take on life is 100% a product of being the first generation to grow up with readily accessible home internet. I have, for example owned the alias "SecretDragoon" in one way or another for over half of my life.

No. Words are meaningless to me

I honestly don’t believe that at all unless you never leave the basement or interact with, you know, real life human beings. It’s easy to maintain that impersonal detachment online but in real life shit gets personal really quickly.

The only way I believe that words are meaningless to you is if you’re legitimately autistic or a budding sociopath.

Online isn't the same as Meatspace tard.

who gives a shit what a 12yearold who doesn't even have the decency to be born in America thinks rofl, imagine being a european they can't even make good non-gin after thousands of years lololol

Who’s the 12 year europoor here?

anyone who talks to me on the internet

like you.

Huh what an odd way to start a flame war. Like I’m not even sure how to respond because a)I’m an ameriburger b) I’m closer to 30 than to 20 and c) kill yourself sweetie :)

Are you autistic? - No. One of the key signs of being autistic is the inability to recognize and decode emotions. This has been something I've never had any problems with. I've watched autistic adults play video games before and it's very apparent that they don't "get" certain kinds of games that were designed to play on people's emotions. Life is Strange is a very good modern example of this. There are also other symptoms such as sameness which don't apply to me.

Are you a sociopath? - No I fundamentally care about other people, I just come off as very apathetic. I'm not going to go shoot up a school, or kill myself or anything but I have very little attachment to this world and wouldn't mind it ending sooner rather than later.

Are you a disgusting basement dweller beta male? - Well you got me there.

Now, I will tell you that I was clinically diagnosed with 1 "mental illness" which is known as Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Absolutely hate and do not respect authority, but for the most part I can "play the part" and act like I do. I think the mental illness is complete BS. Although this was 20+ years ago at this point.

No idea why I am telling you this 🤷.

Back when I was still in high school I remember all these seminars and "lectures" about internet bullying. How horrible it was that Ashley told somebody that their hair was ugly :(

I couldn't do anything but laugh my ass of. Like for real, it's like somebody who almost got stabbed by a knife would educate vietnamn vets on how bad violence is...

thank u 4 ur service o7

It's Trihard 7 you normie

Unironically keep yourself safe.

At least have the balls to tell me to kill myself rather than hiding behind that silly phrase.

I am so sick of the word “bully”, it’s thrown around so loosely and is used in mainstream media constantly to fit a narrative that when addressing it as a problem, they are “progressive” and “in with the times”... online bullying isn’t a fucking problem. I hear about these 13 year old fucktards killing them selves because they were apparently bullied online, and it’s like... you could just turn off your computer, or put your phone in your pocket. No one is forcing you to read their comments. Bullying isn’t making people kill themselves, insecure little shits that take things way too seriously are the problem.

Expecting good decisions from a 13 year old is unrealistic. Also...ignoring some stuff is quite hard without becoming a hermit.

Also troll=anyone who disagrees.

I have a friend who got mad at me because she

Get out ya Normie.

Maybe it was one of those newfangled types of girls, the ones with penises.

You mean girls 2.0?

I honestly have become numb to it. If something really bothers me, delete account, move on. Don't want to participate in a convo bashing on something? Move on.

Yea. If its someone harrasing another person they know irl over facebook or something then i can understand being upset about that. But if theyre both pretty much anonymous it seems stupid tbh

facebook hate mail is even better tbh

No, but the longer you spend in communities like ours the more your worldview gets twisted by it, until you start devolving into the very lolcow you would once mock.

This is pretty much how incels got their start, as I guarantee the majority were /r9k/ anons who began to believe each other's whining so much they built an everyone philosophy out of beta male tears.

I've nearly gone full fed smoker.

Drama really is fairly tame in comparison to a lot of "communities" heaps of the older Chan's with numbers other than 4 and older irc networks could get fairly nasty in a realworld way really quickly if you got doxed or your computer got rooted.

B Bulletin "Post yourself" threads full of judgmental weeb gays for niche Asian video games would have driven half of /r/Drama to unironic sucide tbh

how the fuck can channers dox you based on just what you post online anonymously?

People post identifying info all the time from stuff in the background to metadata to writing analysis. Images with a malicious payload. steno imgs with both a legit file and something malicious. URL shorteners or any one of a number of other vectors.

The longer a user spends on anonymous imageboards the more likely they're going to post something incriminating about themselves. The powerusers would meet up outside of the imageboards on other sites/chats and would share more personal info there.

Plane tracking and sun triangulating.

Your problem is that children spend way too much time online.

Children shouldn't be saved from internet, internet should be saved from children (and sjws).

*Your problem is that you spent way too much time online compared to everyone else.

Agreed.

No, I’m actually capable of empathy and not an emotionally stunted husk of a person.

Maybe step away from the sub if this is a serious thing for you.

No, I’m actually capable of empathy and not an emotionally stunted husk of a person.

soyboy alert

You're giant faggot. Remod u/Ed_butteredtoast then resign yourself permanently.

I'm actually capable of empathy

lol what a cuck

He can understand the feeling his wife's boyfriend gets.

> being married, let alone to a woman

Ensure your safety, KSG style

Eh I'm a woman who played plenty of online games and heard tons of horrible shit to the point that I've become mostly desensitized. I think the difference in your friend's experience is that the toxic messages on tinder directed toward her as a person. Abuse on Reddit or in video games is generally anonymous, and even over voice chat people still don't know your identity beyond what your voice sounds like. If men are creepy toward me over voice chat, they're just doing it because they hear a female voice. They don't know who I am beyond a female voice in a video game. But with dating apps or other forms of communication that are tied to you under your name/with pictures of you, everything is much more personal. It can cut a lot deeper if a man calls you disgusting things on a dating app because he can actually see you and comment directly on your appearance in a way that is often unsettling. For example, if someone threatens to rape me on CoD, I can just brush it off because it's someone talking shit in a video game. But if someone makes a rape threat on tinder, that can get scary quick because they could locate me IRL and actually rape me if they were psycho enough.

yep, you just pinpointed why i find it far more fun to send rape threats and abusive messages on tinder than on xbox live.

Here's a link to a picture with animal friends 4 your effort

squeal

Yeah, I think you're on point. The majority of people who are ~internet hardened~ won't give a shit if some rando on 4chan calls them a soyboy or tells them to kill themselves, but they're going to be hurt if somebody who actually knows something about them insults them based upon their actual attributes. For most people, there's a big difference between seeing an account tell you 'lol you're a neckbeard virgin kys lol' and somebody telling you in person that you come off as an unlovable hand-flapping creep with a crooked nose. Given the number of people in 'thick-skinned' communities who complain about being losers and/or unlovable, chances are they're burned very deeply by how people treat them in person, explicitly hateful or otherwise.

This is why it's a bad idea to dox yourself online.

People actually care what losers think of you?

Caring about other people and their emotions ewwww

You’d think women would be hardened to IRL bullying after middle school. Girls are fucking nasty to each other. Plus they have cooties, yuck.

The evershifting net of support and conflict ensures that no girl becomes immune.

somebody telling you in person that you come off as an unlovable hand-flapping creep with a crooked nose

This was oddly specific.

a girl gamer on the internet?

will you be my e-waifu?

Women in gaming, what did I expect?

Kys

okay

tru

I think it's just a function of what you're regularly exposed to. I had a friend link me that /pol/ post about the /r9k/ dude who an heroed yesterday and she was extremely horrified by how horrible the people on /pol/ were and I was just completely nonbothered because I spend all my online time here or on 4chan so I'm just entirely used to it all.

Anyone who begins a crusade against mean people on the internet is going to be sorely disappointed.

I had 12 year olds on runescape tell me they were going to come to my house and beat me up because I stole their lobster fishing spot.

I had people on a PSP game vividly describe fucking my mother because they lost to me.

People say mean things on the internet. Nobody can change that. If someone doesn't like it, they can just turn off their computer/phone, it's not hard.

Wait a minute, didn't runescape allow multiple people to fish in the same spot?

Yes it does. If I'm not mistaken two people will use up a fishing spot faster than one, or at least that was the idea at the time.

I'm like 90% sure that isn't true. It works that way with trees, for sure, because back when I played there were so many bots at most yew trees that they were unusable, but with fishing spots it seemed like you could have a hundred people on the same one without it having an obvious effect.

Nope it's true, but only for low level fish Once you get to lvl 65, barb fishing opens up and that doesn't get used up faster with more players at it. Low level spawns all get used up fast. Back when I was a f2p noob trying to make enough RSGP for membership, lobster fishing bots pissed me off so much that first thing I did after getting membership was go and kill a ton of wilderness bots.

yeah this is fairly relatable tbh. like intellectually i understand the complaint, and think it's valid to a certain extent, but it is just not something i can connect with at all on an emotional level. like it honestly makes my day when someone gets really and truly Mad Online at me, and lower-level "fuck off retard" type stuff doesnt even register. i dont think gaming really has much to do with it (consider how many hardcore gamer spergs still get tilted incredibly easily) so much as how one relates to the internet. for people like your friend, the internet is essentially an extension of their normal life, and they expect what happens on there to essentially align with normal rl experience. presumably your friend isnt getting called a worthless cunt or whatever very often in her day-to-day life, so it happening online is pretty violently jarring for her. however, if you dont expect online interactions to be analogous to rl ones, then that sort of nastiness probably isnt gonna be particularly shocking, because you either have no expectations going into the situation, or your expectations are based entirely on comparable online experiences. "comparable online experiences" could mean gaming or something, sure, but it could also mean basically any sort of internet socialization in a space that doesnt enforce cordiality.

or maybe its just that were cool and have senses of humor unlike your BITCH friend fuckin roastie cunt

like it honestly makes my day when someone gets really and truly Mad Online at me

Same. It's like Christmas when you get an angry PM or someone sends you a friend request so they can send you an angry PM.

I will skull fuck your corpse u ugly whore!

"Wow you really shouldn't get so bent out of shape over some rando talking shit"

"Hi, you wanna go on a date sometime?"

"Sorry, I'm not interested"

"How dare u reject me! I will skull fuck your corpse u ugly whore!"

Who's the over-sensitive one?

Plus, I've probably been told to kill myself or in some other way insulted on this forum a few hundred times

I guess some people just don’t listen, do they?

I thought it was a feature, tbh.

high five

Lame

I'm with you, idgaf about most shit.

I got my first rape threat earlier and was so happy.

I blame the Facebook generation. Prior to Facebook no one with half a brain put anything remotely identifying online lest you get ruined. Also no one took the internet particularly serious. People that did take the internet seriously usually got ruined and or hounded until they went afk. These days the internet is srs biz, shit posting bullshit is taken at face value news reports are written about single tweets. Imo there are heaps and heaps of people putting there entire life online that really shouldn't be using the internet in the first place.

Bullshit about this being a new thing.

Go read the classic article "a rape in cyberspace".

News stories written about tweets are so annoying. News outlets need to go back to reporting on real shit instead of the hot takes of ~4 random shitposters on twitter.

Or presidental shitpost.

BREAKING NEWS: TRUMP CALLED SOMETHING SAD, MORE IN 5 AFTER VAGINA ADVERTISMENTS

Yeah pretty much. You just get used to it Once you've been on the internet long enough.

I don't game online but as far as forums go it's just text on a screen. It's different if someone said it to you in person. That why the unwritten rule on the internet used to be "don't give out any info" since you don't know who's out there.

I've probably been told to kill myself or in some other way insulted on this forum a few hundred times

not enough

honestly Im just unable to relate to people in general.

No, because I'm not a jackass.

Holy shit you posted something that wasn't dumb as fuck.

sounds like she needs to stop being a little bitch

The internet is the internet. Fuck feelings.

Some communities are more toxic than others. Levels of toxicity is a direct result of what leadership does.

/r/Drama is about the worst one can get without being completely intolerable. In particular, all the making fun of disabilities get really old.

Maybe some people are used to it. That doesn't mean they wouldn't feel a relief when not exposed to it.

I don't call toxicity a "national problem", I just think it's kind of sad that there are all these communities where nobody cares enough to say "how about we just all be nice?", which is proven to work with a bit of effort.

Are u disabled?

Does it really matter?

For any person with basic empathy, it's just as bad to witness something done to others as it is to experience it yourself.

At least in this subreddit I haven't (yet - I know some people might see this as bait) literally been told "the Devil is in you" because of how I was born. (For reference, this is what "ableism" refers to, even if a bunch of agenda-pushers try to give it different meanings.)

As someone who is in the small age group that grew up bridging the divide between digital and analog. The insults online that I've seen are no different than what was said on the playground or in the parks as a kid. Just they are recorded now so it's more visible.

The "hostility" argument is just yet more idiotic concern trolls who have never grown up.
