I don't have a lot of experience in this area, but as far as class goes, assuming your using 5e rules, I'd suggest going with something like fighter if this is gonna be your first time role-playing, since its an easy straightforward class. Also, make sure not to get too engrossed into just the combat side of character creation depending on how your campaign is setup, seeing as that can lead to you feeling out of place in non-combat situations. I'd also make sure to stay away from the wizard class, due to the copious amount of spells you have to keep track of for a first time player, and I'd also stay away from Ranger, as they are seen in general as being under-power compared to the other classes.
