Autism is a spectrum, and while there are many high functioning individuals with the condition (the type the media focuses on), there are just as many who are very low functioning and their autism makes them suffer every day. They will never be independent and their parents will have to caretaker them for the rest of their lives. Many also suffer from episodes of extreme aggression. Implying we shouldn't try to cure autism because some people are fine is just stupid.

I understand what you're trying to say, but making a blanket statement like "we should cure autism" includes high functioning individuals that make up a sizeable portion of the spectrum, and stigmatizes them further. I don't think we should decide that these people need a cure because something is wrong with them.

Great question, and not an easy answer. I do think we have to consider biopower relations when determining any sense of normativity. This isn't really the proper forum for that kind of in depth disucssion, and it would also involve digging through a lot of literature. But because autism isn't inherently painful like cancer is, we should approach "treating" it cautiously. That's all I'm saying!
