And people laughed at doing YouTube as a fulltime job. At least that counts as entertainer/digital marketing/whatever. Twitter is a dead platform walking.
Yeah, I'm really not bothered by people like Phillip Defranco making money off YouTube because to me, it's really no different than making money off a talk show or radio show. It's just in a different format and with less regulations. I see no reason why you should be able to make a living writing tweets though.
DeFranco is different his format is literally very much a news type of show. like 10 minutes every day he makes a video discussing that day's topics. that could be an actual career. Youtube as a fulltime job usually means idiots like the nostalga critic who make crappy videos for autistics and bots
I've wondered, do YouTubers plan to do it forever? What would you put on your resume? What if you made edgy videos and then wanted to get out of it? I feel like you would be basically unhirable.
One of the few YouTubers I regularly follow is Jason Steele/FilmCow/SecretAgentBob because his humor is basically Adult Swim-esque animation. I'm really surprised he hasn't gotten a full time job at an actual studio.
thats sort of the problem, every other movement in the entertainment world usually meant the mainstream studios would hire you. it just hasn't really happened for youtubers though which was what most people assumed would have happened and people probably don't think about it that much. I know Spoony in his early years though he would get like a mythbusters esque show.
anyway here are some examples of how people usually break into the mainstream from niche fields
Chris Nolan's cinematographer got his start making soft-core porn.
The Workaholics were youtube comedians. pretty much every famous director born in the 60s got their start making music videos for bands. most of the famous comedians under 50 now all got their start on the daily show. Aziz Ansari was an intern there for example.
to be honest i just assume they either leave it off their resume or just say they used to work in entertainment for awhile. Like there are tons of out of work actors that quit the industry despite having a bit of success, like working on a tv show for a season or two.
apparently in the peak of the charlie the unicorn days he was offered an adult swim position but they massively low-balled him (iirc he said for a pilot they offered him less than what he was making PER DAY from merch, and a contract would involve some loss of rights) and so here we are
The Adult Swim producer I was working with thought the show needed to have more "drug humor" so that college kids would like it, and I began to realize the project was likely to turn out really bad.
sounds like they wanted some "dude weed lmao" humor which I can't stand so I can commend him for turning it down.
Charlie the Unicorn isn't even one of his funniest videos. Some of his later content is a lot better.
most youtubers sell out their opinions to the highest bidder, act like retards in public or camwhore for money. you are basically asking prostitutes what their future plans are, so don't expect much.
I've wondered about everything you've mentioned as well. Especially for channels where your paycheck is dependent on the whim of kids and teenagers with an iPad, it seems bound to fizzle out eventually, and then what? I suppose the really big ones could get taken up by professional studios, but seems the majority will be stuck with "entertainment" taking up their formative years on their resumes.
It probably depends on the content you make and how you can branch out. You would have to have another income of some sort to stay afloat. One thing I've noticed with a lot of the big cooking channels is that they also have cookbooks and cookware lines. Some art YouTubers and animators sell art prints and merch. Granted you would have to be big enough to get people to buy it, but it's better than scraping for views.
I watch a lot of beauty youtubers and at least one I know of is in the army outside of her YouTube channel. I think a lot of them have outside jobs and the ones that don't do collaborations with makeup companies and have affiliate links.
My wife watches a lot of this garbage and I noticed a parallel between the aspirations of these cows and video game journalists.
Basically both of them start off reviewing other people's content, then they get "freebies" to influence them, then next they get paid to basically endorse crap and finally they both aspire to work with/for the people they are "reviewing".
It's literally the lifecycle/evolution of an internet whore, or essentially "whore yourself out enough and hope you'll get a turn to be the pimp".
I have a feeling some of them just have rich spouses. There's no way they're doing 100s of dollars in makeup hauls and they aren't married to money or working some kind of job. I think some are actually makeup artists but I don't think many are.
I assume you get a career in something which is related to your YouTube-channel.
Editing, SFX, script writing, programming, carpeting etc.
Seems like you would be pretty hireable depending on how good you are at your trade. Your YouTube channel basically works like a massive portfolio to show off your skills.
No, and even then what's the use? He rambles a bit and people reply that he's a fucking retard. I remember having a mandatory workshop about Twitter marketing a few years back. In a class of ~40 people of 19-20-21 year olds, 2 people had an active Twitter account. Most people had one at one point but stopped using it.
If you have enough followers companies will pay you for product placement. My wife does marketing. Her company will throw a few grand out for a single tweet from someone with a big following.
TIFU by literally daring people to boycott me for harassing a famous minor about their pubic hair when I have as much job security as the spongebob “Evil Patrick” meme
Owen Benjamin has never been known for making good decisions. he was actually your average d-list LA comedian this time last year, then he pissed someone off and now he's a lumberjack in the midwest who pretends to be a right wing comedian. also he tweeted too much
I'd actually consider employing the Evil Patrick meme for a low-level position. This caustic manbaby fuck-yokel doesn't even manage to effectively cuck libs (which is child's play, I'm a libcuck myself). He fails a battle of wits against a kid who can't even buy cigarettes and manages to demonstrate his total lack of any value in both the workplace and market of ideas.
He should grab his bootstraps and start sucking dick by the docks and at least demonstrate willingness to do more than rattling his pathetic fucking tincan on Twitter like the emasculated fucking failure he is.
now my ability to make an income has been revoked.
Oh boo fucking hoo. Imagine being a libertarian and being this assblasted that you'll actually have to be productive and work for a living. Something tells me he's the type of guy who whines about how hard his job is while everyone else picks up his slack. I wonder how he'll like the receiving end of capitalism.
Found the cummie. You know, for all the whining about capitalism being inherently exploitative, I've never see any of these dissidents provide a viable, actionable alternative that doesn't rely on 10,000ft abstractions about power dynamics.
planning through market simulation (centralized or distributed)
planning through machine learning (centralized or distributed)
UBI
...etc. I don't think any of those are particularly abstract or hard to envision.
The currency system is a system that was specifically invented because data about who needed what (at the global scope) was next-to-nonexistent and had to be approximated somehow. That issue is rapidly being mooted, why shouldn't we leverage the vastly superior information systems we have now?
The currency system is a system that was specifically invented because data about who needed what (at the global scope) was next-to-nonexistent and had to be approximated somehow.
Disagree. I view money as coercion tokens, i.e. I do something that I do not want to do (even if i enjoyed writing a book, i will not enjoy selling it) and get tokens that I can spend on making people do something they don't want to, either.
I've never see any of these dissidents provide a viable, actionable alternative
The problem is with pure capitalism, which *is* inherently exploitative. The trick is to mitigate its problems with things like social programs and regulations. You can support capitalism and still think libertarianism is stupid.
Capitalism is fine, I just want taxes high enough to pay for decent education, basic healthcare, effective infrastructure, and a safety net for the elderly or disabled.
Incidentally, reading factual criticism of libertarianism and immediately screeching about how capitalism is the best thing ever, calling your opponents communists and demanding they come up with a better plan on the spot, is another of the core ideas of libertarianism.
Having a live feed of his and his family getting his house repossessed and slowly starving on the street would be interesting. If he immediately breaks his beliefs after his Twitter got banned I can only imagine what he'd do if he faced some real hardships. Fingers crossed for tough times ahead for Owen.
Oh, the wife will leave with the child to go live with her parents in Oklahoma before they starve. Might get to see this guy spiral into depression and suicide though.
broke dick is trolling you soooo hard right now and all he had to do was consistantly look like a huge fucking moron for years. And you fell right into it. He gotchoo good.
"i swear some of you guys need this shit explained to you"
Said with zero irony. maybe, KYS would fix the problem? you'd never haver have to explain things to a cuck/soy/srdine/tankie/commie/idiom treadmill ever again.
nah thats cool but you actually have to have one up on someone to feel that shit, and that certainly isnt the case with people who have sore anuses because of me posting
Left leaning comedians usually just resort to low-hanging "DAE Drumpf" humor but at least it's sometimes funny. Right wing comedians are just completely awful except for maybe two or three in history.
I don't think it has anything to do with free speech. Twitter isn't known as an unconditional free speech platform (they've been blocking shit for ages) - it's just hilarious how quickly he changed his tune from "I don't need sponsors, my pubes have sex!1!one!!" to "mah family so huuungry twitter :(((((" If anyone feels any sympathy for him after that - he's the biggest retard in history.
Well yeah. I don't need a stupid piece of paper to tell me that I was born lol that whole system is retarded, it just demonstrates that the government is too incompetent to keep track of its own citizens.
Doesn't matter. He did a "come at me bro," got BTFO, and then whined about it like a little bitch. It's hilarious even if the person he taunted was that limp-wristed little gun grabber retard.
This is the best thing that has ever happened to him. His comedy was so washed and unfunny that he wasn’t making any money from that alone. But Now that he’s been shoa’d from twitter, he’s ascended to conservatard martyrdom which entitles you to tribute at the alter of his patreon account of some 10k a month. I’m convinced this was his strategy all along given his epic Oscar night spergout.
The "punch up not down" rule basically requires you to either make fun of successful/popular things, or have a persecution complex. Its basically why most conservatives don't do comedy, but alt-righters have their own well-developed brand (they think they're oppressed by liberals).
To everyone else it may not be funny, but it makes them prime lolcows.
The “punch up not down” explanation is easily the most retarded analysis of comedy on the planet. I don’t know if you even know what comedy is. Have you ever heard a joke before?
as explanations go it might be closer to 0% explanatory than 100%, you may generate a closer explanation of comedy if you invert it; almost everything funny to anyone is mean spirited in some direction or another and "punching up" is just a cute knot you tie yourself in, in order to believe your being mean is ethical
This is by far the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. You could’ve said conservatives were inbred racist retards and it still would’ve been slightly closer to the truth than saying comedy is about the “punch up not down” rule.
We make fun of retards all the time here (punching down) and it’s still funny
Political comedy sux but it seems like conservative representation is almost nothing in the broad comedy scene, even counting all forms of comedy. There's South Park and Red Eye was a thing for a while, but otherwise conservative comedians are very hard to come by, and the ones that do exist aren't remotely funny.
Most likely the things that tend to make people conservative also make them unlikely to want to be public comics. Most comedians are damaged neurotics with poor familial relationships who move to their nearest big city to grind out comedy gigs at night while waiting tables or whatever during the day. Additionally, in those big cities they're unlikely to be super popular because there aren't really right wing audiences.
So you have two sets of selection - first self selection, and then market selection.
In contrast to comics who do lib/lefty political stuff, the damaged neurotics who lean conservative typically just smoke meth and try to fuck their father-in-law's second wife.
There are plenty of funny right-wingers, they just tell jokes among their friends.
There's South Park and Red Eye was a thing for a while
event those two shows took a cumtown-esque "hands off of politics but liberals are always made fun of more often" slant.
personally i blame it all on (((nepotism)))
people say conservatives can't do comedy, if you ask any jew from LA or NYC about Palestinian muslims or illegal immigrants into israel or how well israel defends its borders, you will suddenly hear some very far-right wing opinions from some of the most hilarious people on earth. Jerry Seinfeld went to a muslim killing amusement park earlier this year, for instance. (yes seriously)
I mean there really isn't such a thing as political comedy, unless you're counting trash like the daily show/Colbert/SNL level shit, but if you're looking for comedians who happen to be conservative there's Bill Burr, Tim Allen.
Other comedians who have gotten sjw libtards in a tizzy recently include Seinfeld, Dave Chapelle, and Ricky Gervais. While that obviously doesn't make them conservative, it certainly is endearing.
I won’t bother finding you any links but Carlin has plenty of funny stuff. But the political shit was just that....shit! That goes for all comedians imo though, from both sides of the spectrum.
If you want to insult Hogg, a better way is pointing out how much he looks like a school shooter, especially when he puts on his adorable little “serious mcstern face” he always wears in interviews. But why tf would you talk about his pubes? and insulting him for going to college? the fuck’s your illness benjamin?
Room is a 2015 independent drama film directed by Lenny Abrahamson and written by Emma Donoghue, based on her novel of the same name. It stars Brie Larson as a woman who has been held captive for seven years, and whose 5-year-old son (Jacob Tremblay) was born in captivity. Their escape allows the boy to experience the outside world for the first time. The film also stars Joan Allen, Sean Bridgers, and William H. Macy.
Our drama scientists detected a massive irony wave, about 20x more intense than we previously thought possible. It's going to take years of study to fully understand the mechanisms that generated an ironic event of this intensity.
You're a heartless fuck who will gladly parade a traumatized child survivor of a mass shooting through a hostile media circus just to score cheap political points.
You perpetuate a discourse that values identity and image over thoughtful policy. He's not right because he has good ideas, he's right because of his experiences. This is part of a broad trend of devaluing expertise in favor of a marketable storyline. It's tragic that this child is getting caught up in that meatgrinder.
oh do me do me
I don't actually care one way or the other I just want to try and get a rise out of people I don't know on the internet because it makes me feel something briefly
Seriously though you're missing the point. Hogg himself is just a milquetoast run of the mill teenage idealist motivated by narcissism, honest passion, or both. Who cares - people like him are a dime a dozen. He's funny because of what the adults in the room with him end up doing.
eh he's just a teenager. the funny part is all the adults around him losing their goddamn minds.
On the left you have a bunch of grown ass men and women seriously looking up to him for opinions on serious and complicated policy matters.
On the right you have an adult human being discussing the teenager's pubes or mocking a trauma victim just to spite the left. And all the while they're treating him just like the left does: like a serious expert to be challenged.
He's just some fucking guy - the circus is the funny part.
yes it sure is unlikely that people would make fun of a funny looking kids appearance when he puts himself in the spotlight and acts like hes important all of a sudden
other than his appearance hes irrelevant like all the parkland kids
i prob wouldnt make fun of him as much if people didnt live vicariously through him and make him as cocky as he is though
He's somewhat revolutionary, an early representation of the delusional milo copycats that are coming. He's just more u0 front and less clever with the begging
Normally I object to this kind of thing seeing how it smacks of policing wrongthink, but this guy is a jackass who offered nothing to the discussion and is really just eating crow at this point. He isn't a martyr, he's a douchebag who got the microphone ripped away from him.
Like I get free speech is fundamentally important but at the same time when unfunny edgelords with the wit of your average 6th grader get told by the free market that they aren’t wanted anymore (and thus learn the real world comes with consequences) I’m not exactly crying for them.

1 Anarcho_Autism 2018-04-07
Found the cummie. You know, for all the whining about capitalism being inherently exploitative, I've never see any of these dissidents provide a viable, actionable alternative that doesn't rely on 10,000ft abstractions about power dynamics.
1 RelevantEmployment 2018-04-07
1 pi_over_3 2018-04-07
UBI needs capitalism to function, thats were the tax money to fund it comes from.
1 RelevantEmployment 2018-04-07
Granted, but I see socialism as the logical conclusion of UBI.
1 thefran 2018-04-07
Disagree. I view money as coercion tokens, i.e. I do something that I do not want to do (even if i enjoyed writing a book, i will not enjoy selling it) and get tokens that I can spend on making people do something they don't want to, either.
1 RelevantEmployment 2018-04-07
You're assuming that people won't charge for doing something they like; I don't think that's very plausible.
1 snallygaster 2018-04-07
The problem is with pure capitalism, which *is* inherently exploitative. The trick is to mitigate its problems with things like social programs and regulations. You can support capitalism and still think libertarianism is stupid.
1 Iron-Fist 2018-04-07
Capitalism is fine, I just want taxes high enough to pay for decent education, basic healthcare, effective infrastructure, and a safety net for the elderly or disabled.
1 thefran 2018-04-07
Incidentally, reading factual criticism of libertarianism and immediately screeching about how capitalism is the best thing ever, calling your opponents communists and demanding they come up with a better plan on the spot, is another of the core ideas of libertarianism.

I don't think it has anything to do with free speech.
1 snallygaster 2018-04-07
Why can't conservatives into comedy?
1 gincwut 2018-04-07
The "punch up not down" rule basically requires you to either make fun of successful/popular things, or have a persecution complex. Its basically why most conservatives don't do comedy, but alt-righters have their own well-developed brand (they think they're oppressed by liberals).
To everyone else it may not be funny, but it makes them prime lolcows.
1 glorica 2018-04-07
The “punch up not down” explanation is easily the most retarded analysis of comedy on the planet. I don’t know if you even know what comedy is. Have you ever heard a joke before?
1 dreadlordbone 2018-04-07
9/11
1 EmotionalInjury 2018-04-07
as explanations go it might be closer to 0% explanatory than 100%, you may generate a closer explanation of comedy if you invert it; almost everything funny to anyone is mean spirited in some direction or another and "punching up" is just a cute knot you tie yourself in, in order to believe your being mean is ethical
1 SWIMsfriend 2018-04-07

1 theycallmeryan 2018-04-07
This is by far the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. You could’ve said conservatives were inbred racist retards and it still would’ve been slightly closer to the truth than saying comedy is about the “punch up not down” rule.
We make fun of retards all the time here (punching down) and it’s still funny

1 grobobobo 2018-04-07
Neither can liberals, political comedy just isn't funny.
1 snallygaster 2018-04-07
Political comedy sux but it seems like conservative representation is almost nothing in the broad comedy scene, even counting all forms of comedy. There's South Park and Red Eye was a thing for a while, but otherwise conservative comedians are very hard to come by, and the ones that do exist aren't remotely funny.
1 ConsoleWarCriminal 2018-04-07
1 D4nnyp3ligr0 2018-04-07
The only funny right-winger that I know about is P.J. O'rourke and he's more of a radical centrist who happens to vote republican.
1 SWIMsfriend 2018-04-07
event those two shows took a cumtown-esque "hands off of politics but liberals are always made fun of more often" slant.
personally i blame it all on (((nepotism)))
people say conservatives can't do comedy, if you ask any jew from LA or NYC about Palestinian muslims or illegal immigrants into israel or how well israel defends its borders, you will suddenly hear some very far-right wing opinions from some of the most hilarious people on earth. Jerry Seinfeld went to a muslim killing amusement park earlier this year, for instance. (yes seriously)
1 mrcolon96 2018-04-07
wait what. why is that even a thing?
1 SWIMsfriend 2018-04-07
killing Muslims for Jews is like Disney world for whites, it's the best thing ever.
1 wow___justwow 2018-04-07
I mean there really isn't such a thing as political comedy, unless you're counting trash like the daily show/Colbert/SNL level shit, but if you're looking for comedians who happen to be conservative there's Bill Burr, Tim Allen.
Other comedians who have gotten sjw libtards in a tizzy recently include Seinfeld, Dave Chapelle, and Ricky Gervais. While that obviously doesn't make them conservative, it certainly is endearing.
1 ScaledDown 2018-04-07
Bill Burr is not remotely conservative.

I can't answer this without knowing your personal politics? What response here would piss you off the most.
1 MadMaxMercer 2018-04-07
I think he is the bastion of modern youth and has political opinons that are beyond reproach.
1 hesh582 2018-04-07
You're a heartless fuck who will gladly parade a traumatized child survivor of a mass shooting through a hostile media circus just to score cheap political points.
You perpetuate a discourse that values identity and image over thoughtful policy. He's not right because he has good ideas, he's right because of his experiences. This is part of a broad trend of devaluing expertise in favor of a marketable storyline. It's tragic that this child is getting caught up in that meatgrinder.
1 MadMaxMercer 2018-04-07
Nice, now I think he's a spineless media prop using the corpses of his classmates to get his 15 seconds of fame.
1 Wednesdayayay 2018-04-07
oh do me do me I don't actually care one way or the other I just want to try and get a rise out of people I don't know on the internet because it makes me feel something briefly

1 hesh582 2018-04-07
"He's a teenager".
Seriously though you're missing the point. Hogg himself is just a milquetoast run of the mill teenage idealist motivated by narcissism, honest passion, or both. Who cares - people like him are a dime a dozen. He's funny because of what the adults in the room with him end up doing.
1 MadMaxMercer 2018-04-07
Great, now I'm a radical centrist >:(
1 ChaddingTater 2018-04-07
Since when is dead floridians a bad thing?
1 captainpriapism 2018-04-07
i just think his serious face and his spindly arms are funny tbh
1 hesh582 2018-04-07
eh he's just a teenager. the funny part is all the adults around him losing their goddamn minds.
1 captainpriapism 2018-04-07
its funny though, people wringing their hands and crying about nothing and looking up to a 17 year old
what can you do except poke fun at the entire situation
1 snallygaster 2018-04-07
I wonder if all of the circus is going to ruin Hogg or launch his career.

uh huh. sure you do.
1 captainpriapism 2018-04-07
yes it sure is unlikely that people would make fun of a funny looking kids appearance when he puts himself in the spotlight and acts like hes important all of a sudden
other than his appearance hes irrelevant like all the parkland kids
i prob wouldnt make fun of him as much if people didnt live vicariously through him and make him as cocky as he is though
1 Ed_ButteredToast 2018-04-07
Jealous much? Of a teenager lmao. The absolute pathetic state of you hahahahaa
1 captainpriapism 2018-04-07

you only need to put as much effort in as elicits a response
your problem is that youre dealing with someone far smarter than yourself (me), and that means that you need to put in far more work to have an effect
whereas i can just say "lol fags" and ill have an instant response from like 5 of you guys and then a couple hours later the srd crowd
all really angry, bitter responses filled with spittle and real life emotion that practically seeps out of the screen
keeps me going tbh
anyway the moral of the story is youre shit at this and you could learn a lot from someone like me if you werent so randomly gay and hostile
1 Ed_ButteredToast 2018-04-07

Normally I object to this kind of thing seeing how it smacks of policing wrongthink, but this guy is a jackass who offered nothing to the discussion and is really just eating crow at this point. He isn't a martyr, he's a douchebag who got the microphone ripped away from him.

Me: Time to put myself on every talk show, news show, and website I can find and spread my controversial agenda.
Also me: Help, I am just a normal child and these people who disagree with me are bullying me.
1 YamYoshi 2018-04-07
Okay but whoever the dude attacking Hogg is kinda a dick and should be suspended for bullying. And maybe he should get a real job
1 PotatoePizza 2018-04-07
He certainly deserves to lose his income, he possibly should be lawfully executed.
1 IzzyNobre 2018-04-07
Like I get free speech is fundamentally important but at the same time when unfunny edgelords with the wit of your average 6th grader get told by the free market that they aren’t wanted anymore (and thus learn the real world comes with consequences) I’m not exactly crying for them.
Maybe I am a fucking idiot
