Thatβs it. They are diversifying to keep up obligations, and the Boy Scouts do a lot more hands on stuff which interests boys and girls. I get why people cling to tradition though.
I really think gender-specific social groups do have their benefits. I lost interest in boy scouts so it doesn't have to necessarily be that organization but I really don't see why literally everything has to be inclusive of both genders all the time. I think teenage men and women can definitely benefit from having groups where they can bond with people of their own gender and learn life skills. Putting them together just causes a lot of the same awkward social situations they experience at school. Especially in the 21st century when the question keeps getting raised as to what masculinity really means and what parts of it we should keep.
I really don't know how/why people stay in scouts. I did cub scouts which was genuinely fun but a couple years into boy scouts it just felt like a job except I wasn't getting paid. You have to dedicate a lot of time to it to get their rankings and I was always told that being an eagle scout can help you in life but I'm pretty sure most people wouldn't care one way or the other.
But with scouts, you have to actually study things and campouts last entire weekends (which would be fine except they usually have a lot of stuff planned that are intended to get you to the next rank). It should have been a lot more recreational and focused on enjoying the outdoors and learning cool skills instead of basically being another class you take once a week.
It was interesting to watch from a social standpoint though. When you shove a bunch of teenage boys together for long periods of time away from their electronics, they either become really close or mortal enemies. Pretty funny honestly. Especially when you give one of them the modicum of power that comes with being a troop leader.
Seriouspost: Did you ever go on a scouts campout as a boy (assuming you are male)? When you're that young, it's a pretty unique experience being away from home, your parents (unless they came), and surrounded primarily by people of your age and gender. You bond with people you would have never expected to get along with.
This outrage just illustrates how unwilling some people are to do basic research before getting angry. The troops are going to be gender-segregated. This '''''''''issue'''''''''''''''''''' is beyond stupid.
This is happening because fewer and fewer people want to be scouts. If the boy scouts want to keep existing they need to up their membership and this is the easiest way

Iβm tempted to send my Eagle Scout medal and card back to HQ
Why do eagle scouts think anyone else cares they're Eagle Scouts? Because no one cares.
Because no one cares.
I used to think that as well until I was hounded in my last job interview for not putting it on my resume when I made a passing reference to being an Eagle Scout. Turns out my current boss was helping his son with his Eagle project and we had a great conversation about our experiences. Then he offered me the job.

This is about the scouts dwindling membership more than anything imo.

It's the same thing that happened to the males only cowboy LARP college(Deep Springs). Male recruitment fell so they decided to open up.

Yep I agree with that, but Iβm just saying this change is more about monetary issues than social issues.

Which is funny as fuck because it won't. You will however get laughed at by people for thinking being an eagle scout matters at all

i can understand not wanting anything from your childhood to change, i just donβt understand the benefits of same-sex camping
1 AlveolarPressure 2018-05-05
They don't want any gussy interrupting their campfire circle jerks. Seriously what kind of boy doesn't want to go camping with a bunch of girls?
1 heavenlytoaster 2018-05-05
The kind that is fake and/or gay.
1 SAC-Lawn_Gnome 2018-05-05

I slept over a bunch though, I was usually with groups of boys but assing a girl or two never really affected anything

the troops are going to be gender-segregated. It wasn't an issue to begin with.

What does skill in tying knots have to do anything? Are the boy scouts going to tie your daughter's fallopian tubes before they dick her?

Boy scouts? What is this, a 1950s sitcom.

If they're segregated then why don't they just go ahead and join the Girl Scouts?

Not really. The whole reason this is happening is to deal with the dwindling number of scouts.
