Gotta love when people obsessively reply to anyone criticizing them and insist that those disagreeing with them are offended. It's reeeing for fart sniffers.
the mixed messages in “This Is America” are also superficial. They allude to race-based catastrophes without explanation, therefore without justification, just a pop artist’s sanctimony. This spectacle of American chaos is vague and safely “radical.” Its style of eternal paranoia keeps viewers from thinking. They can, instead, fantasize that clicking on Glover’s squandering of black cultural and political history equates to a militant political act.
I'm with you. Glover is a college-educated label stooge with a squeaky-clean image that won't upset whites, and the video is superficial and feels contrived, but it's a decent track in its own right. It almost has a Ghanaian GH hiplife thing going, and that's cool to hear in a mainstream American release.
See, every time I've brought this up no one has wanted to engage me. The crappy trap is a blatant parody of that particularly stupid genre, and the OTT dancing is clearly poking fun at the coon tendencies of some entertainers.
Can you believe that when I was in school in the 1950s in rural Portugal they didn't even let us study the implications of Donald Glover's 'This is America'? Fucking racists.
I use Kelly Gallagher's Article of the Week every Monday morning with them, so we've already read and discussed various relevant topics like the NFL players kneeling and gun violence in America.
Oh my god this poor class. Nobody wants to argue about politics in fucking high school.

"ISIS" (Apple Pie Terrorists) didn't murder 1000 Americans last year. It was cops. Mostly white ones. Like the motherfucker who shot the drunk guy/idiot crawling on the hallway floor of the Travel-lodge because he was "coming right at me!"
There are 1.1 million cops in the US. ISIS had at most around 70k militants, but that number is considered inflated. By pure numbers, of course cops are going to kill more, and of course it's more white cops because the majority of our force is white. Do you then think it's a problem that black people commit the majority of the crime? Probably not, because you're only able to think rationally when it doesn't confirm your biases. Obviously there is much more to both of these issues but I'm glad your stupid stats added nothing to the argument.
"ISIS" (Apple Pie Terrorists) didn't murder 1000 Americans last year. It was cops.
But they also didn't maintain peace and order either. Also they're in a different country separated by an ocean. It's like comparing Nazis favorably to American mail men because they were responsible for less fatal car crashes in the United States.
What we are saying is that it's dumb to spend so much effort on caring about Isis when they don't affect us, while there are issues closer to home.
It would be like if we were constantly complaining about tourist scams in Thailand, and meanwhile hundreds of thousands of packages were being stolen by postmen right here in the US every year.
Imagine trying to use a fad rap video to convince 14 year olds of your politics. Then imagine going home and having your spouse or significant other ask you what you did today and explaining the former with a smile on your face.
I have long proposed we replace the entire public school system with a new laptop sent to school-aged kids every 3 years and annual in-person tests.

Meanwhile in East Asia, high school seniors are studying mathematics and sciences that American university students with relevant majors get to 3 years into university.
I wish I were exaggerating. Teachers in America, despite being literally years behind countries with far less funded education programs, are teaching American rap videos in class time and treating their class discussions like an /r/politics post.
This is probably one of the biggest problems in America, and a guy got downvoted to -1000 for suggesting that there is little educational merit to showing students a rap video.
Yeah our education system is utter shit. All I get emails for from my kids school relates to them urgently begging us to prepare our kids for more standardized testing. All the worksheets, classwork, and homework revolve around preparing them to do well on state tests so the schools don't lose funding. It has nothing to do with educating the kids or preparing them for life. Shit even gym class has been put to only twice a week, and they wonder why kids are fat as fuck.
It doesn't sound like they even effectively prepare them to excel at the tests though. The issue isn't "teaching to the test," the issue is that America's teachers are extremely low performing and overcompensated.
I literally received an email stating we needed to rally our children so the school could maintain a high enough testing average to not lose funding, I was floored.
We're actually basically the same as most of Western Europe. I know that Chinese kids do learn a fuckton of science and math, but the OP is actually exaggerating when he says that Americans get to it three years into university; they learn, like, the equivalent of AP Calc, which is something that most STEM majors have when they come in and will have in their first year.
Russian Federation
...and then half of all the OECD countries, including Switzerland, Austria, Iceland, and Luxembourg.
Also, do you know how to read? Netherlands-Taiwan on that list aren't significantly different from the US, statistically; this means that you could really say that the US is anywhere from 15th to 28th.
We rank above the OECD average in science too. I think that maybe--just maybe--we have time to show them a rap video as an in-class exercise in an English course.
I'm glad you found a reasonable goal. While you guys stretch for "acceptable," despite spending 28% higher than the OECD average on education per student, East Asian countries will still be crushing you in maths and sciences, and even reading.
See, I started by comparing the US to East Asian countries, and now you're playing with the data and moving the goalposts to make the situation seem not as dire. You tried to show me a single example of the US beating an Asian country in one subject as some sort of counter-point, and now your argument has essentially boiled down to this:
The US is spending substantially more money to almost be average when compared to other OECD countries.
Good job. Show them more rap videos and have more useless class discussions. I'm sure Paulo Freire and Vygotsky are saluting you from Communist Heaven.
Doesn't really seem to correlate to educational success in any country. To bring up Switzerland, again, they spend more than we do per student.
I'll also add that the US education system has more rural schools than a lot of the generally smaller and more urbanized OECD countries and, in turn, has to build and maintain more relatively small schools in rural areas; this will increase spending per student, both in terms of actual building maintenance and because you need a principal and shit at every school.
STEM has nothing to do with it, stupid. Do you even have any background in education research whatsoever?
American education programs are now so overwhelmingly based on socialist/communist lines of thought that it's actually embarrassing. That's why I'm bringing up Freire and Vygotsky, two socialists whose works are cited constantly in education related textbooks. It has nothing to do with STEM, and that you immediately thought of that shows you have zero reason to be discussing this topic.
No matter how you desperately try to spin it, Asian countries are kicking America's ass in almost every single possible way, and America keeps dropping at a constant slope. In the meantime, teachers are blaming this on everyone they can while applying ineffective pedagogy.
You may want to stick to topics you actually know a thing or two about, like the 457 Tumblr genders.
I dunno, one of my favorite teachers was in his early 30s and pretty cool. He didn't do any fellowkids shit besides let us watch South Park one time, back when it was edgy and felt semi-relevant, but otherwise he was great. He introduced me to Pynchon, Dillard, and John Okada and he got me interested in literature as art and writing for its own sake; so that was cool.
Man, it's a good music video, but people have gotten way too obsessed. It's not some high art, you aren't so woke for liking it. And the idea that people would show this in class to discuss race relations? Seems like a sad way to try to relate to the kids.
I mean, i think Childish Gambino is a shitty rapper, but there's a proud tradition of teachers tossing out vaguely relevant but entertaining videos to keep the kids paying attention while they try to explain a deeper topic.
Shit, i'm pretty sure i saw titties in class once because the teacher showed Schindler's list while we were talking about WWII and the Holocaust.
I have a feeling you are a super white person trying to relate to the blacks/ pop culture. That ‘music’ video is terrible and has zero significance to anything. Sure you could try and derive some deeper meaning, but it doesn’t change anything. Just concentrate on teaching the basics, and don’t get too far into the weeds. Please remember to respect individualism and promote freedom of thought. Not everyone thinks the way you do nor should they, in a free society.
Really? You’ve never heard of Donald Glover? That’s pretty painfully out of touch, dude.
Imagine going to college for years, investing in a community, caring about your students, making sure they have the tools they need to succeed and have great jobs... Then some dip shit on reddit calls you painfully out of touch with humanity because you don't like rap and don't know who one rapper is. Lol
The absolute state of millenials.
Out of touch use to be like not knowing how to operate a cell phone or computer, now it's not being part of some retards Fandom.
To be fair, if I had them do more than I had asked them to do it, I think it may have killed the my students' enthusiasm for that video. I only asked them to respond to the video and a criticism of it through a 10-minute think-pair-share and a one-page response. They were free to agree with the Glover's claims, disagree with aspects of it, identify and analyze imagery or symbols throughout, or even complain that its popularity is unjustifiable and is blown out of proportion.
Gallagher's Article of the Week assignment, which this all fell under in my class, is just to bring awareness to the students and allow the students to read and write on relevant and often-times controversial subjects.

"ISIS" (Apple Pie Terrorists) didn't murder 1000 Americans last year. It was cops. Mostly white ones. Like the motherfucker who shot the drunk guy/idiot crawling on the hallway floor of the Travel-lodge because he was "coming right at me!"

1 Fletch71011 2018-05-15
There are 1.1 million cops in the US. ISIS had at most around 70k militants, but that number is considered inflated. By pure numbers, of course cops are going to kill more, and of course it's more white cops because the majority of our force is white. Do you then think it's a problem that black people commit the majority of the crime? Probably not, because you're only able to think rationally when it doesn't confirm your biases. Obviously there is much more to both of these issues but I'm glad your stupid stats added nothing to the argument.
Imagine not being able to think critically.
1 aqouta 2018-05-15
But they also didn't maintain peace and order either. Also they're in a different country separated by an ocean. It's like comparing Nazis favorably to American mail men because they were responsible for less fatal car crashes in the United States.
1 Che_Gueporna 2018-05-15
Nobody is saying Isis is better than cops.
1 aqouta 2018-05-15
But he's the one who brought up ISIS, no one was complaining about ISIS here. It's a bad comparison for so many reasons.

Articulate basketball americans.
1 Bigfartyshit 2018-05-15
Meanwhile in East Asia, high school seniors are studying mathematics and sciences that American university students with relevant majors get to 3 years into university.
I wish I were exaggerating. Teachers in America, despite being literally years behind countries with far less funded education programs, are teaching American rap videos in class time and treating their class discussions like an /r/politics post.
This is probably one of the biggest problems in America, and a guy got downvoted to -1000 for suggesting that there is little educational merit to showing students a rap video.
1 die_rattin 2018-05-15
I don’t think anyone is surprised by American teachers being retarded, that’s basically been a given forever
1 WeWuzKANG5 2018-05-15
Yeah our education system is utter shit. All I get emails for from my kids school relates to them urgently begging us to prepare our kids for more standardized testing. All the worksheets, classwork, and homework revolve around preparing them to do well on state tests so the schools don't lose funding. It has nothing to do with educating the kids or preparing them for life. Shit even gym class has been put to only twice a week, and they wonder why kids are fat as fuck.
1 DoctorFahrenheit 2018-05-15
It doesn't sound like they even effectively prepare them to excel at the tests though. The issue isn't "teaching to the test," the issue is that America's teachers are extremely low performing and overcompensated.
1 WeWuzKANG5 2018-05-15
I literally received an email stating we needed to rally our children so the school could maintain a high enough testing average to not lose funding, I was floored.
1 HasLBGWPosts 2018-05-15
We're actually basically the same as most of Western Europe. I know that Chinese kids do learn a fuckton of science and math, but the OP is actually exaggerating when he says that Americans get to it three years into university; they learn, like, the equivalent of AP Calc, which is something that most STEM majors have when they come in and will have in their first year.
1 Che_Gueporna 2018-05-15
Lol.
It might surprise you to learn that schools teach multiple subjects. In "East Asia" they also teach politics.
1 Bigfartyshit 2018-05-15
Yes, they teach all subjects at an accelerated rate. In the meantime American teachers show rap videos.
1 HasLBGWPosts 2018-05-15
Then why do American students score better than Chinese ones on reading exams?
1 Bigfartyshit 2018-05-15
In reading scores, the world rankings go like this:
1.) Singapore
2.) Hong Kong
3.) Canada
4.) Finland
5.) Ireland
6.) Estonia
7.) Korea
8.) Japan
...
...
24.) United States

1 HasLBGWPosts 2018-05-15
I mean, it also goes
Also, do you know how to read? Netherlands-Taiwan on that list aren't significantly different from the US, statistically; this means that you could really say that the US is anywhere from 15th to 28th.
We rank above the OECD average in science too. I think that maybe--just maybe--we have time to show them a rap video as an in-class exercise in an English course.
1 Bigfartyshit 2018-05-15
1 HasLBGWPosts 2018-05-15
TIL everything that isn't STEM is communism
Doesn't really seem to correlate to educational success in any country. To bring up Switzerland, again, they spend more than we do per student.
I'll also add that the US education system has more rural schools than a lot of the generally smaller and more urbanized OECD countries and, in turn, has to build and maintain more relatively small schools in rural areas; this will increase spending per student, both in terms of actual building maintenance and because you need a principal and shit at every school.
1 Bigfartyshit 2018-05-15
1 WeWuzKANG5 2018-05-15
I mean teachers jobs in America is to indoctrinate children and accept shitty pay, is it any surprise they're this agenda driven and reactionary?

I dunno, one of my favorite teachers was in his early 30s and pretty cool. He didn't do any fellowkids shit besides let us watch South Park one time, back when it was edgy and felt semi-relevant, but otherwise he was great. He introduced me to Pynchon, Dillard, and John Okada and he got me interested in literature as art and writing for its own sake; so that was cool.
1 CarnistHappyCamp 2018-05-15
child abuse right there
1 rnjbond 2018-05-15
Man, it's a good music video, but people have gotten way too obsessed. It's not some high art, you aren't so woke for liking it. And the idea that people would show this in class to discuss race relations? Seems like a sad way to try to relate to the kids.
1 Che_Gueporna 2018-05-15
I mean, i think Childish Gambino is a shitty rapper, but there's a proud tradition of teachers tossing out vaguely relevant but entertaining videos to keep the kids paying attention while they try to explain a deeper topic.
Shit, i'm pretty sure i saw titties in class once because the teacher showed Schindler's list while we were talking about WWII and the Holocaust.
1 Dropperneck 2018-05-15
u/SuperMario1313
I have a feeling you are a super white person trying to relate to the blacks/ pop culture. That ‘music’ video is terrible and has zero significance to anything. Sure you could try and derive some deeper meaning, but it doesn’t change anything. Just concentrate on teaching the basics, and don’t get too far into the weeds. Please remember to respect individualism and promote freedom of thought. Not everyone thinks the way you do nor should they, in a free society.
