what, you don't love all the LOL XD RANDOM quips and goofs!
Remember that time Rocket Racoon said TASERFACE! LOOOL! AND THEN HE SAID IT AGAIN! AND THEN HE KEPT SAYING IT WHILE HE WAS LAUGHING SO EVERYONE IN THE AUDIENCE GOT THE JOKE. The fucking madlad. Yeah, I would let James Gunn diddle me
don't forget their most genius recurring joke device: the interrupted dramatic moment. Its so genius in its simplicity. You have one character give a dramatic speech, or take a dramatic pose. The music swells....and then BAM! some comic relief character sticks his head around the corner, the music cuts out and Jokey McQuipster says "hey guys, I found my car keys!" Cut to a shot of all the main characters looking at each other confusedly and then cut to the next scene. Fucking kills me every time! (See "Are you finished yet?" in Black Panther, numerous moments in Dr. Strange, GotG2, Avengers, all the other shit etc.)
GotG and Thor Ragnarok at least were open about being fun action-comedies, not all this weird try-hard shit getting spoiled by stupid jokes like Iron Man.
Yes, He's do dumb. Only has made movies with billions of dollars at the box office. While your accomplishments in fleecing the stupid sheep that watch that capeshit include?
No I hate film-youtube and if you make youtube videos about movies you might as well title your channel "I am the personfication of HIV". Fuck RLM, Fuck Every Frame a Painting, Fuck Patrick Willems, Fuck Moviebob, Fuck CinemaSins, Fuck Nostalgia Critic, Fuck YMS, Fuck Honest Trailers, Fuck every single pasty "look at how clever I am" saying banal shit about movies on youtube.
if you don't think Infinity War was a good movie, you're simply trying to be a contrarian
hate all the smaller movies all you want, but Inifnity War was about 1 million times better than any movie with that overloaded clusterfuck of a cast had any right being
Iron man 1 was good, the other films up until the Avengers was meh and then they made every film copy Whedon's Avengers quips. Iron Man 3 was dogshit. they have been coasting on goodwill for half a decade
Literally any other movie trend (except maybe horror movies) would be better.
I was gonna be offended, but the horror genre does best when it's not in the spotlight. See: late 90s teen slashers, torture porn era, and the zombie revival.
I'm longing for an actual good horror movie, why do they need to be so bad plot wise. Even though I somehow enjoy those shitty 90's slashers, the babadook is still the best one I've seen so far, and that says something.
I think that Westerns made in modern times are arguably more creative than spaghettis, just because they require an update and transition of the themes of westerns.
This video has a great analysis on what it takes to make a western.
Essentially 2 brothers gone vigilante against predatory banks trying to foreclose and take ownership of previously worthless land which is now extremely valuable given today's unconventional west Texas oil discoveries, trying to save their family's land to break the cycle of poverty. One brother is 'honest', the other is an outlaw, both pursued by an old school lawman about to retire.
Maher is just the closest old-media host to new media. He is keenly aware old media is crumbling before him but that sweet HBO cash is what keeps him from jumping ship, or saying anything seen as too obscene. Though he does slip up from time to time.
Sad times we living in when Will Smith and Dwayne Johnson are the only two niggas able to bring in 400 million+ at the box office in non- DC, non-Marvel, non-Wizarding World movies.
"But then twenty years or so ago, something happened – adults decided they didn’t have to give up kid stuff," he said. "And so they pretended comic books were actually sophisticated literature."
Unmarried
No kids
Smokes pot
Used to grope models at the Playboy mansion with Hugh Hefner, who lived like a 13 year old his entire life
Complains that adults read comic books
He's been a hypocrite for ages, I stopped watching him must be what 10 years ago now, maybe more, in part due to his anti-vax stance, I mean you can't shit on people for not listening to science and then not listen to science. Makes you look like a buffoon
KING: You mean you don't get a -- you don't get a flu shot?
MAHER: A flu shot is the worst thing you can do.
KING: Why? MAHER: Because it's got -- it's got mercury.
KING: It prevents flu.
MAHER: It doesn't prevent. First of all, that's...
KING: I haven't had the flu in 25 years since I've been taking a flu shot.
MAHER: Well, I hate to tell you, Larry, but if you have a flu shot for more than five years in a row, there's ten times the likelihood that you'll get Alzheimer's disease. I would stop getting your...
KING: What did you say?
MAHER: That went better in rehearsal but it was still good. Absolutely, no the defense against disease is to have a strong immune system. A flu shot just compromises your immune system.
KING: So you don't take any western medicine, don't take an aspirin?
MAHER: Never, an aspirin no. Thousands of people die from aspirin every year.
You can google around for more bullshit stuff he's said.
healthy adults that get them every year are legit retarded and just buying into marketing
I think herd immunity actually applies here. If you work in contact with the elderly it also reduces the chances of carrying the flu to someone that can't fight it off
There was an 18 year old that died from the flu from where I'm at. Athletic, healthy, and that jazz. The flu killed him dead, it's definitely worth your time to get the shot.
Why the fuck would you NOT get a flu shot? It saves you ending up bedridden for a few days and feeling lethargic for months. What marketing is there to buy into? They cost all of $10, although both of my employers offer them to employees for free.
You're the legit retarded one if you actively allow yourself get sick because you think you're a tough guy.
because the flu strain mutates constantly, and its basically a placebo unless you have a terrible immune system
you give it to old people so they dont die if they happen to get the same strain as last year, you dont just get as many injections as possible like a hypochondriac lol
i love Larry King he was like the proto-Tucker Carlson. He just let people prove how fucking retarded they were. When you can surprise a 70+ year old jew with your stupid opinions you know you're something
The only thing he’s wrong about there is that it’s not the same with girls. He honestly thinks underage girls don’t rub their cunts thinking about nailing their history teacher Chad McBigdick. He’s a cuck.
Guy's a delusional. Literally every comic book guy I know is a soy-drinking male feminist who hates the orange man so even if his points about capefaggot manbabies is true, there's zero connection to Trump because he is a reactionary response to this culture than a symptom of it.
I used to hate Bill because of his retarded smug arguments, but after this he could literally bash on islam/religion for the rest of his life and I'll still pray for him to get into heaven lmao
To my mind, this embracing of what were unambiguously children's characters at their mid-20th century inception seems to indicate a retreat from the admittedly overwhelming complexities of modern existence, it looks to me very much like a significant section of the public, having given up on attempting to understand the reality they are actually living in, have instead reasoned that they might at least be able to comprehend the sprawling, meaningless, but at-least-still-finite 'universes' presented by DC or Marvel Comics. I would also observe that it is, potentially, culturally catastrophic to have the ephemera of a previous century squatting possessively on the cultural stage and refusing to allow this surely unprecedented era to develop a culture of its own, relevant and sufficient to its times.
I would also observe that it is, potentially, culturally catastrophic to have the ephemera of a previous century squatting possessively on the cultural stage and refusing to allow this surely unprecedented era to develop a culture of its own, relevant and sufficient to its times.
The homogenization and blandness of most of Hollywood's film output comes down to the international market and the demand that every film be a blockbuster. No one will love it, but no one will hate it.
Not sure I'd call him a paedophile, but I won't deny he has some very weird sexual issues in his work. Nothing wrong with a bit o' magic though, and he's woke as hell about class issues and commodification/infantilisation of culture, among other things. Jerusalem would be the dirtbag Ulysses if Ulysses wasn't already the dirtbag Ulysses.
Nah. He uses them well and naturally. There's a difference between trying to sound smart and being smart. The guy who linked /r/iamverysmart never will be.
I tried reading the latest League. I don't know how, but he made Harry Potter being the anti-christ, a school shooter, and a weird sex pervert seem staid and boring.
He moves it out of the Victorian era. It gets progressively shittier the closest it gets to the modern day, because Alan Moore hates modern pop-culture. The Century series, the latest League volume, led up to the anti-climax of Harry Potter being the anti-Christ , which was boring because he hates those books for spreading disinformation about real magic and went too "meta" with the whole thing. It also goes into his weird-ass political views, best described as "anarchist but less interesting". Personally, if you're going to feature Harry Potter as the anti-Christ, I wouldn't. Instead, it would have been to have Neville actually being the chosen one, and the first panel of the comic book would feature the shattered remains of Harry's trademark glasses flying through the air surrounded by skull fragments, a fragment of scarred skin, a single green eye and bits of brain, as the later League is all about writing around trademarks hence "Jimmy Bond",and Moore still gets the whole tasteless "school shooting at Hogwarts" bit the whole book was written around as well as a horrifically tasteless "take that" against Harry Potter. Also Mary Poppins is not god. Mary Poppins is Mary Poppins, an that should be enough for anyone. There was a whole chapter in one of the books about that. Mary Poppins isn't secretly Hestia, God, Jesus, or the Whore of Babylon. She's Mary Poppins.
God that book pissed me off in all the wrong ways.
His magic is real. He cursed Warner Brother's Comic book adaptions, and that's why they all suck. Zack Snyder is actually a homunculus he made in his basement, and sent to destroy all DC comic's live action film adaptions.
Because there's nothing wrong with quality creating media for children? Children learn a lot from the cartoons, books, etc. they consume and creating comic books for them isn't inherently pathetic at all. His point is about the adults whose main form of consumption is media that was made for children.
It's not as if comics like batman and superman are stopping anyone from writing and reading new stuff too. There are a ton of new comics that aren't re-using the same heroes in capes kids have been reading forever. Saga for example is hugely popular and entirely modern. You can argue that escapism is still a factor in their popularity but comics written explicitly for adults are happily exploring new ground in a peaceful co-existence with the timeless heroes in spandex punching baddies.
I've never totally bought Moore on this. Who did he write Watchmen for ? That's not for children.
He wants to have his cake & eat it. He may have a point, but he is a man who made a career writing stories about Batman & he knows it, and you cant say while trying to impress chubby middle-aged Midlands chavs at the local Wycca meet up.
culturally catastrophic to have the ephemera of a previous century squatting possessively on the cultural stage and refusing to allow this surely unprecedented era to develop a culture of its own
lmao comicels actually think this guy is smart and a good writer.
American comic books died with the newstand. The industry is on licensing life support. They only do new things, instead of just only publishing reprints, in the hopes that new, interesting stories will come about that can be adapted into other media.
Yeah if you tried to make sophisticated literature out of a comic book it would combust. It’s just scientifically impossible to tell high brow stories in comic panels.
It is strange how for years it was this semi-interesting niche thing to read and then because robert downey jr pranced about a mansion for an hour and a half one time every sub-20 year old drone from here to the pacific now thinks comic books suddenly mean anything.
In that case I would still say it is refreshing that someone who is very left-wing doesn't go to extreme lengths to make excuses for a lot of islam bullshit. I don't think you should discriminate muslims because of their religion, but if they do unacceptable shit you should be able to call them out on it.
Nah Maher ruins it by being retarded enough to have his valid takes completely discredited. He has very good points when he talks about Islam. He was also stupid enough to drop the N-bomb on his own fucking show last year. That he wasn't fired for it shows that nobody actually cares what Bill Maher says.
Mahar's a political chameleon who will jump sides whenever he thinks he can get more views.
I bet a bunch of people think we're REEEEing over him besmirching the virginity of capeshit, but in reality we're salty that this substandard r/drama mod wannabe gets Boomerbucks for his routine and we don't
Also the title is a bit wrong. He got fired around 9 months later, and his show wasn't doing well to begin with so it's likely he was going to get sacked anyway.
He most definitely got shit canned for that individual show. There was a concerted effort to fuck with him and advertisers dropped him left and right. People were not happy over that. The show very quickly became very unprofitable.
I'm just parroting what he said on a podcast lmao, you could be right. I'm sure 9 months was the time til he got sacked, but at least the man himself claims he was doing shit anyway.
Hmm well I was a fan of the show and I remember the news being pretty relentless on ripping on the man that calls American soldiers cowards right after 9-11. It was not the greatest time to be brave with your shit talking about America. I don't know how you could even top that short of making a speech in Hawaii in 1941 celebrating the genius and bravery in Japanese strategy.
If the media is shitting on you, do you really sack the controversial man or soak up the view numbers (and then maybe sack him)? I mean we have social media now and so in 2018 it's the former, but I'm not so sure if they'd sack him immediately back in the 00s.
Again though, you could be right. Obviously Maher isn't the most reliable narrator on the issue.
Every time I see smug egotistical seriousposting on this sub it's always you.
I recently decided people who are bad with subtext(this means you) didn't have to be my audience. I appreciate that the occasional lack of /s can be confusing, but it's a little much to expect the rest of us to slow down for you.
Imagine this much unironic C O P E, it's OVER for sweaty!
I'm so great my comments have complex hidden meaning
Imagine thinking saying the opposite of what you mean, dragging everything out into a petty slapfight and being needlessly belligerent all the time is a tough riddle to crack.
I'm just sperging out over shit noone cares about.
The problem was it is broadcast tv. Their only way to make money is ads. There was no ad money for the show. It was not just controversy from angry blue checkers like you see today. It was a concerted boycott of companies dropping his ass and more wanting to be attached to him. ABC isn't a charity. They made no money from it versus alternatives.
Actual live proof of a 12 year old on drama over here lmao
Talking shit about US troops during the biggest pro-war moment of the 2000s is beyond career suicide. If you weren't an actual baby back then you'd remember the sheer amount of American jingoism that Trump wishes he could stir up now
In either way, I only have this version of the image. The original had a /pol/ post which I replaced with this tard wrangler's poor attempt at being sentient.
I remember the same thing. It’s funny, because if you take what he was saying exactly is he seemingly intended to say it-only that, flying into a building is braver than remotely controlling a cruise missile, he has a point. But at that time, everyone was thinking about the cowardice of killing thousands of people who had nothing to do with any conflict at all. But yeah, you’re right-his career was thoroughly derailed at least for a long time based on that specific comment.
I’m of two minds about the guy, not particularly because I’m a Republican, but I do respect the man at least in part because he’s one of the only left-leaning people in Hollywood who continually calls out Islam, or really any religion, and a lot of the pussy PC culture. I feel like I know he’s an asshole, he knows he’s an asshole, and at least we can both get down on that. We might actually be able to figure some shit out because we both know we are idiots and assholes… There’s nowhere to go but up
He said the people in the planes weren’t cowards, and they weren’t. A coward wouldn’t go kamikaze. He wasn’t praising their mission or saying they were good people.
Killing yourself doesn't take that much bravery, judging by suicide rates, and not having to see the result of your actions doesn't strike me as especially corageous either.
Ok extremely unpopular opinion. Stan Lee set comics back, because while similar mediums like manga ended up explorer all facets of life American comics got stuck being majorly only about superheroes. This hurt the medium comic in a way that is only now starting to recuperate from.
You can criticize manga but lack of variety it aint. You can find popular manga about almost anything, not even niche stuff. There is a very famous series about a gay couple during the 80s american gang wars. There are popular manga about a man trying to deal with political corruption as he starts working in politics. There are manga about people that wanna play jazz.
With american comics what is selling? Spiderman # 1546?
There's some really good series out there,no doubt about it,but its because the industry is not so centralized as comic books, there can come a one hit wonder type of author that gets his big break and then he wont release anything of note or hes gonna milk his series until the cows come home. Also they save costs and time by not coloring their series and how they are distributed in large books compared to flimsy comics that are what? 40-50 pages. So you can find the good stuff even on a whim.
But you cant deny that there's a ton of fluff out there.Especially the stuff that doesn't gets scanned and translated into English, shit is usually dime a dozen.
If you were too look close enough you'd find shit that wasn't about superheroes the same way you have to find something in manga that isn't about fucking your little sister. Why even bother.
There is a very famous series about a gay couple during the 80s american gang wars. There are popular manga about a man trying to deal with political corruption as he starts working in politics. There are manga about people that wanna play jazz.
Is there Manga about people wallpapering a large auditorium in silence? Because that sounds more interesting than any of that shit.
If you look at the best selling graphic novels/trades (this is equivalent to manga volumes) from October.
There's currently Gideon's Falls a horror mystery in a city, My Heroes have always been Junkies which is a story about a girl going through rehab, and Death or Glory a series about heists during the 1960's.
You know what the best selling one was for manga?
Actual capeshit Literally a manga version of the Justice League
The only way you get to this point is by being a weeb and not paying attention to comics.
They are the same thing, and I say this with a new volume of Yotsuba and a stack of the Over the Garden Wall comic at my side.
There's a graphic novel, Hicksville, by Dylan Horrocks, that has that as one of its underlying themes - that graphic novels could have been another great medium but were ruined by cookie-cutter capeshit.
The literary establishment is dead and rotting. Academia has murdered art. No new great works of art can be made, because we are incapable of appreciating them.
I'm not, actually. You try reading modern literary analysis, as I had to, and you'll gradually realize that civilization has already ended. We just haven't noticed yet.
You just said you had a post-graduate degree in literary analysis, and now you claim you have a law degree. You'd have to be at least forty to have both of those. How boring and miserable must your life be, as a forty year old man, to be not only posting on r/drama, but also moderating it?
It's very clear that your assumptions about how long studies take is entirely predicated on Burget schooling and not, say, the Oxbridge model where you can do undergrad alongside law degrees.
I'm not saying the degree is useless; I'm saying most modern literary analysis is garbage and should be fed to pigs. I like good literary analysis, but the last work I read that I really enjoyed in that field was an examination of Japanese horror movies from ten years ago.
Yeah, lit critique is godawful because it's sounds so much time trying to connect the dots it sucks everything interesting out of stories and boils them down to academically-proven movements and universal cliches, not unlike the spergs over at TVTropes.
Stan Lee was just a fan of and as such just following an already well established trend of superhero favouritism. DC Comics is much, much more at fault.
Nah, that's just a symptom and not the real issue. Look at europe. They're not dominated by capeshit, but they're still not doing well.
The issue is that people think comics are for (man)children. In Japan shit directed at children is of course still king, but you also have lots aiming for older and more 'normal' demographics.
The market is small. Capes are easy to understand and easy to read. They are the simplest, dumbest concept, and thus survive. Its like that one book that should have been awesome but wasn't where Superman was the last man on Earth and had to fight twin clones of Hitler.
It had nothing to do with Stan Lee. It was the government getting involved and threatening to regulate comics and jail the creators for corrupting the youth and peddling “filth”. What was popular before superheroes were crime and horror, and due to government pushback and intervention in the industry these types of stories were abandoned and capeshit became king.
Even capeshit was heavily, heavily censored and took decades to slowly pull back those barriers. That’s why comics used to have the “comics code” which was basically comic companies self censoring in order to prevent a government regulatory board from censoring them. This is where the cheesy, campy style of superhero comics came from, because you couldn’t have Batman drop a guy off a building he would now be running around fighting dinosaurs and talking apes with Robin.
So yeah, the government censored an art form until only one type of that art form existed and that’s why capeshit became the most accepted form of comic book and other genres died off. Stan Lee was just one of the best creators of said shit, promoting the actual talents of creators like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, but if the industry had seen freedom at the time it’s doubtful those types of comics would have been so ubiquitous.
Cough, I mean capeshit is some faggot shit and comics are for gay bitches.
Actually, superheroes didn't regain popularity until the 1960s. They were also big in the 30's and early 40s, but most people lost interest in them. Horror and Crime comics were the big thing until the early 1950s, and then it was science fiction and basic adventure stories for a while. Then the Silver Age happened, and superheroes ruled the roost. That's not getting into the sixties underground comic book scene, which latter blossomed into the eighties and nineties black and white boom which featured a lot of non-superhero titles.
Comic books died a long ago, and superheroes are the sole survivors. They're like the Coelcanths: living fossils, only kept alive to keep the much more profitable licensing department going.
wrong, the comics code decades before pretty much sanatized comics to the point where only superheros comics could make money. Also the 1960s comics were pretty neat. They were in real time. Stan Lee even said he would keep aging the characters until they died and then he would write adventures for the next generation of heros. like Spiderman was only in high school for 2 years real time. 13 years in college, and the last 40 years in his 20s
No comics talk about really good stuff, the problem is how western culture has taken certain aspects like diversity and progressiveness and made them into the focal point of everything. Look at the story where Kraven impersonates Spiderman, or the dark knight series. Blame corporates trying to appeal to everyone instead of focusing their attention on a few topics.
Also check out non marvel and dc comics they're great.
What the fuck does that have to do with Stan Lee? That's like if when Ralph Emerson criticized theatre for being stuck in the past he went after Shakespeare instead of the people writing the god damned plays. Stan Lee wasn't the one pushing Spiderman issue #978, it was the executives at Marvel. Plus, comic books would be a dead medium without superheroes, and they're already dying anyway. People just don't like to read books full of still images and stilted dialogue when they can watch full length series with sound and animation and cinematography. The popularization of manga in Japan has also stilted creativity in anime. Hardly any anime is ever made that isn't based off of a manga or light novel, because studios can't take the risk or afford a few flops without going bankrupt. It's really just pick your poison with these more unique mediums.
Speaking of comedy, how dare you mock a comedy legend like The Three Stooges. You've got some balls. Unfortunately, you're too good for such trivial stuff, what with your genius intellect and all them picture less books you done read. At least Stan Lee inspired people, and was well liked, unlike you. So shut your mouth and get off your high horse, asshole.
Woman Thor was hot garbage, though. The industry is mostly elderly, in spirit if not in body, white leftist males trying to appeal to young women so they can fuck them at this point. Its embarrassing.
Last I checked, Miles Morales is actually pretty well liked by the fans currently. Riri Williams (black female Iron Man) on the other hand, is not, from what I've seen at least.
Comparing trump's election with capeshit popularity is incredibly stupid, but I do think its silly that some people actually think that capeshit is deep or meaningful in anyway.
I want to see Alan Moore, Neil Gaimen, and Grant Morrison ritually rape, murder, and sacrifice Bill Maher to their dark gods. And then Frank Miller just stabs his corpse with a katana while Rob Liefeld sits in the corner in shame.
I'm pretty damn liberal, and so from a very liberal point of view, I say this:
Fuck you, Bill Maher.
Fuck you for shitting on something people love just so you can condescend to them to make yourself seem superior.
Fuck you for making a medium you don't understand the scapegoat for society's ills, much as people have done with videogames, rap, rock and roll, and yes, even stand-up comedy.
Fuck you for using the death of an admired and beloved figure as a sleazy excuse for you to grandstand.
Fuck you for acting like any art medium should be considered a lesser medium, something for idiots and children.
Fuck you for trying to politicize something that was largely politically benign.
Fuck you for your unnecessary insult to people who are hurting, the rhetorical equivalent of kicking someone while they're down.
Fuck you, Bill Maher. As a liberal who likely agrees with you on a lot of stuff, fuck you, you piece of shit hack.
I’ll never understand these people who insist that certain mediums are only for kids/teens and can’t contain “mature adult stories”. If you took a mature adult story (however you define it) and made it into a comic/anime/cartoon the paper isn’t going to spontaneously combust and the story’s still going to be the same.
Maher just won a lot of respect from me at least: he truly has balls.
And now when adults are forced to do grown-up things like buy auto insurance, they call it “adulting,” and act like it’s some giant struggle.
Yep, hit the nail on the head there.

Fuck RLM, Fuck Every Frame a Painting, Fuck Patrick Willems, Fuck Moviebob, Fuck CinemaSins, Fuck Nostalgia Critic, Fuck YMS, Fuck Honest Trailers, Fuck every single pasty "look at how clever I am" saying banal shit about movies on youtube.
1 Sarge_Ward 2018-11-17
This post comes off as 'totally not mad.' Youre trying waay too hard.
How do you even manage to look like the pathetic ones when making fun of fucking comic books, the medium even losers think is for ultranerds.
1 CrosbyStillzandSwag 2018-11-17
not at all. Seeing downsies in control of pop culture gets me litty af, I'm more than happy to admit that
1 burnitdownsyndrome 2018-11-17
if you don't think Infinity War was a good movie, you're simply trying to be a contrarian
hate all the smaller movies all you want, but Inifnity War was about 1 million times better than any movie with that overloaded clusterfuck of a cast had any right being
1 FearlessFlash 2018-11-17
Iron man 1 was good, the other films up until the Avengers was meh and then they made every film copy Whedon's Avengers quips. Iron Man 3 was dogshit. they have been coasting on goodwill for half a decade
1 Al-Rokers-BBC 2018-11-17
Same with star wars
1 bareballzthebitch 2018-11-17
All Star Wars after Empire Strikes Back and Capeshit after Val Kilmer Batman are shit - most fans

1 RichEvansSextape 2018-11-17
Imagine thinking the OG hyper-consumer movie franchise started being bad in the last few years
1 cimarafa 2018-11-17
Capeshit is the worst movie trend. Literally any other movie trend (except maybe horror movies) would be better. Even historical movies.

Historical fiction is unironically the best genre
1 cimarafa 2018-11-17
Problem is that when it’s unrealistic the historynerds complain, and when it’s realistic it’s usually lame/boring.
1 NationalismIsFun 2018-11-17
The former leads to good drama and I just disagree about the later
1 xXsnip_ur_ballsXx 2018-11-17
Realistic history is only boring for people who have the attention span of a goldfish.

I love capeshit, read Pride and Prejudice, and unironically watch TCM. You need to go stick your head in a book and read.
1 TrueBlue98 2018-11-17
Yep exactly
Some the of the shit Caesar got involved in is straight up more exciting than any movie, the siege of Alexandria is absurd
1 CadicalRentrist 2018-11-17
Clearly what we need is a pink haired poc mohawked trans girl with cyborg implants and a Samurai sword in medieval europe.

Ben Franklin as a transman.

And I'm a haggisbong so I like seeing English people getting killed.

Usually it'll get insane amounts of praise from critics, even if it is pure fiction and a dull film at best.
1 captainpriapism 2018-11-17
the same people that make capeshit end up making it though and you get nazi ufo zombies
1 AnnoysTheGoys 2018-11-17
I was gonna be offended, but the horror genre does best when it's not in the spotlight. See: late 90s teen slashers, torture porn era, and the zombie revival.
1 GandalfTheGay_69 2018-11-17
I'm longing for an actual good horror movie, why do they need to be so bad plot wise. Even though I somehow enjoy those shitty 90's slashers, the babadook is still the best one I've seen so far, and that says something.
1 LadyVetinari 2018-11-17
Hereditary was very good. The Invitation is good, more thriller tho.
1 AnnoysTheGoys 2018-11-17
Highly recommend The Endless. It's on Netflix too.
1 Bluest_waters 2018-11-17
overall good and worth a watch
but holy shit too many slow moving conversations. Like we're just gonna sit here and have a long slow talk about boring shit for a while. How bout no?
1 AnnoysTheGoys 2018-11-17
Yeah there's about a third of the brothers awkward conversations that you could easily cut
1 jaredschaffer27 2018-11-17
The Babadook
Oculus
Dark Skies
Trollhunter (not very spooky)
It Follows
The Witch
The Battery
The Invitation (not very spooky)
The Ritual
A Dark Song
It Comes At Night
Summer of 84
You're Next (kinda slashery, but a cut above imo)
The Poughkeepsie Tapes
Green Room
Hounds of Love
1 ZMowlcher 2018-11-17
Evil Dead Remake was very good.

1 Burnnoticelover 2018-11-17
I want contemporary westerns to get big next. More movies like Hell or High Water and No Country for Old Men.
1 Momruepari 2018-11-17
we need more spaghettis.
also how is No Country for Old Men even a western like niBBa what like
1 Burnnoticelover 2018-11-17
niBBa how is it not
1 Momruepari 2018-11-17
ok I see yer point there
1 Burnnoticelover 2018-11-17
I think that Westerns made in modern times are arguably more creative than spaghettis, just because they require an update and transition of the themes of westerns.
This video has a great analysis on what it takes to make a western.
1 Momruepari 2018-11-17
you can shove your video and your "westerns" up your ass
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is still my all time fav
also Fargo (the movie) > No Country For Old Men but both r good
1 Time_to_Drink 2018-11-17
Yes
1 rockidol 2018-11-17
What’s hell or high water about?
1 duckraul2 2018-11-17
Essentially 2 brothers gone vigilante against predatory banks trying to foreclose and take ownership of previously worthless land which is now extremely valuable given today's unconventional west Texas oil discoveries, trying to save their family's land to break the cycle of poverty. One brother is 'honest', the other is an outlaw, both pursued by an old school lawman about to retire.
1 duckraul2 2018-11-17
My boy. Good movie and the outro introduced me to Chris Stapleton
1 captainpriapism 2018-11-17
you have to think about those genres though
whos the antagonist? is there a twist?
these people just want "obvious good guy beats obvious bad guy with beefy punching"

1 Roach-Master 2018-11-17
He's still pro-establishment in most regards, it's just that he isn't the usual NPC and does edgy shit.

Considering this, maybe you are retarded.

1 Baconlightning 2018-11-17
Bill Maher isn't really establishment left.
He's been at odds with establishment Hollywood celebs before.
1 Iseden 2018-11-17
Maher is just the closest old-media host to new media. He is keenly aware old media is crumbling before him but that sweet HBO cash is what keeps him from jumping ship, or saying anything seen as too obscene. Though he does slip up from time to time.

1 Matthew94 2018-11-17
Maus is dogshit. It's about a rich guy who uses his connections to dodge all of the horrors of the war whole everyone around him dies.
He manages to save up like a year's worth of food in 3 months in a God damn concentration camp.

1 KittehDragoon 2018-11-17
He knows 100% how his fans feel on the subject. I doubt it's a coincidence he posted this like the day after his last show for the year.
1 Nanaki__ 2018-11-17
He's been a hypocrite for ages, I stopped watching him must be what 10 years ago now, maybe more, in part due to his anti-vax stance, I mean you can't shit on people for not listening to science and then not listen to science. Makes you look like a buffoon
1 OysterCookie 2018-11-17
A consistent ideology is for cucks and foids, a chad like billy boy here doesn't have time for nonsense like that
1 RichEvansSextape 2018-11-17

1 Nanaki__ 2018-11-17
I'm not doing any more work than this, here is a small sample of his crazy:
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0512/15/lkl.01.html
1 captainpriapism 2018-11-17
tbf flu shots are for old and infirm people, healthy adults that get them every year are legit retarded and just buying into marketing
1 Assy-McGee 2018-11-17
oh fuck we actually agree on something
1 Nanaki__ 2018-11-17
He was saying this to a 70+ year old man.
1 captainpriapism 2018-11-17
yeah he def counts as old and infirm
sorry if i came across as though i was arguing maher wasnt retarded
hes definitely retarded
1 transoceanicdeath 2018-11-17
yeah, but he was defending his own behavior, which Larry King questioned
1 Nanaki__ 2018-11-17
what does that have to do with the price of tea in china?
1 _narrows 2018-11-17
Any idiot understand that Larry king is immortal
1 OkThatsProblematic 2018-11-17
1 Let_you_down 2018-11-17
Flu shots are for the old and infirm. By others getting them, the common strains of flu are less likely to spread to them. It's heard immunity.
1 3DBeerGoggles 2018-11-17
I think herd immunity actually applies here. If you work in contact with the elderly it also reduces the chances of carrying the flu to someone that can't fight it off
1 captainpriapism 2018-11-17
yeah vulnerable people and the ones that have to get close to them might get some benefit, obviously theres exceptions
its way less effective than people think too
1 3DBeerGoggles 2018-11-17
It varies from year to year, as the Flu vaccination for any given year is changed based on what strains are forecasted to be common that year.
1 ZMowlcher 2018-11-17
There was an 18 year old that died from the flu from where I'm at. Athletic, healthy, and that jazz. The flu killed him dead, it's definitely worth your time to get the shot.
1 loli_esports 2018-11-17
You cant be healthy if your dead
1 l1ll111lllll11111111 2018-11-17
Why the fuck would you NOT get a flu shot? It saves you ending up bedridden for a few days and feeling lethargic for months. What marketing is there to buy into? They cost all of $10, although both of my employers offer them to employees for free.
You're the legit retarded one if you actively allow yourself get sick because you think you're a tough guy.
1 captainpriapism 2018-11-17
because the flu strain mutates constantly, and its basically a placebo unless you have a terrible immune system
you give it to old people so they dont die if they happen to get the same strain as last year, you dont just get as many injections as possible like a hypochondriac lol
1 Ranilen 2018-11-17
Wow, he's not anti-vaccination, hes anti-medicine-as-a-basic-concept. That's even more impressively stupid.
1 FearlessFlash 2018-11-17

1 someonecool43 2018-11-17
I would also observe that it is, potentially, culturally catastrophic to have the ephemera of a previous century squatting possessively on the cultural stage and refusing to allow this surely unprecedented era to develop a culture of its own, relevant and sufficient to its times.

He's a mixed bag.
1 RichEvansSextape 2018-11-17
He's also a huge baby who never stops to cry about capeshit despite it being the reason anyone cares about him.
From Hell is over glorified serial killer fanfiction, too.
1 911roofer 2018-11-17
He's been typecast and he hates it. Trouble is, his smart, but not smart enough to let go of the past and move on.

Nah that's your dad
1 RichEvansSextape 2018-11-17

1 911roofer 2018-11-17
Alan Moore also defended that trash series Uber and is a bitter old man whose last good comic was produced ages ago.
1 Lateraltwo 2018-11-17
Read his literature and transmet again
1 911roofer 2018-11-17
I tried reading the latest League. I don't know how, but he made Harry Potter being the anti-christ, a school shooter, and a weird sex pervert seem staid and boring.
1 BeastTrinity 2018-11-17
What? I thought the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was like, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and shitcetera. Does harry potter make a cameo?
1 911roofer 2018-11-17

Alan Moore also wanted to make "tasteful pornography" and made a comic with underage rape, incest, prostitution and more.

1 old_grumpy_grandpa 2018-11-17
>and made a comic with underage rape, incest, prostitution and more.
Literally nothing wrong with that, unless the "more" includes cuckoldry.
1 FearlessFlash 2018-11-17
what a great quote, hey what was stopping Moore from becoming a postman or something instead of writing comic books?
Also he pretends to be a magician something that even weird kids grow out of at like 7 when they discover masturbation.
1 911roofer 2018-11-17
His magic is real. He cursed Warner Brother's Comic book adaptions, and that's why they all suck. Zack Snyder is actually a homunculus he made in his basement, and sent to destroy all DC comic's live action film adaptions.
1 simiskaste 2018-11-17
Because there's nothing wrong with quality creating media for children? Children learn a lot from the cartoons, books, etc. they consume and creating comic books for them isn't inherently pathetic at all. His point is about the adults whose main form of consumption is media that was made for children.
1 Kensin 2018-11-17
It's not as if comics like batman and superman are stopping anyone from writing and reading new stuff too. There are a ton of new comics that aren't re-using the same heroes in capes kids have been reading forever. Saga for example is hugely popular and entirely modern. You can argue that escapism is still a factor in their popularity but comics written explicitly for adults are happily exploring new ground in a peaceful co-existence with the timeless heroes in spandex punching baddies.
1 SpeakerOfThings 2018-11-17
I've never totally bought Moore on this. Who did he write Watchmen for ? That's not for children.
He wants to have his cake & eat it. He may have a point, but he is a man who made a career writing stories about Batman & he knows it, and you cant say while trying to impress chubby middle-aged Midlands chavs at the local Wycca meet up.
1 hecc987654321 2018-11-17

1 leva549 2018-11-17
lmao comicels actually think this guy is smart and a good writer.
1 911roofer 2018-11-17
American comic books died with the newstand. The industry is on licensing life support. They only do new things, instead of just only publishing reprints, in the hopes that new, interesting stories will come about that can be adapted into other media.
1 Crusader_1096_2 2018-11-17
> "And so they pretended comic books were actually sophisticated literature."
But muh Watchmen... it's more high-brow than Harry Potter at least.
1 rockidol 2018-11-17
Yeah if you tried to make sophisticated literature out of a comic book it would combust. It’s just scientifically impossible to tell high brow stories in comic panels.
1 Slutha 2018-11-17
Bout time someone with a little weight to their name called out capeshit
1 911roofer 2018-11-17

1 blartangel 2018-11-17
It is strange how for years it was this semi-interesting niche thing to read and then because robert downey jr pranced about a mansion for an hour and a half one time every sub-20 year old drone from here to the pacific now thinks comic books suddenly mean anything.
1 TurbulentStorage 2018-11-17

What are his views on islam? Pretty out of the loop here, I'm not american
1 LobotomistCircu 2018-11-17
Maher is just the sole voice on the far left who dislikes religion enough to call out Islam as an affront to every value the far left holds.
It'd be refreshing if he weren't horrendously hypocritical and misinformed on tons of other issues.
1 GandalfTheGay_69 2018-11-17
In that case I would still say it is refreshing that someone who is very left-wing doesn't go to extreme lengths to make excuses for a lot of islam bullshit. I don't think you should discriminate muslims because of their religion, but if they do unacceptable shit you should be able to call them out on it.
1 LobotomistCircu 2018-11-17
Nah Maher ruins it by being retarded enough to have his valid takes completely discredited. He has very good points when he talks about Islam. He was also stupid enough to drop the N-bomb on his own fucking show last year. That he wasn't fired for it shows that nobody actually cares what Bill Maher says.

I bet a bunch of people think we're REEEEing over him besmirching the virginity of capeshit, but in reality we're salty that this substandard r/drama mod wannabe gets Boomerbucks for his routine and we don't
1 CirqueDuFuder 2018-11-17
This dude told America 9-11 was an act of bravery. You think he cares about pissing off capeshit fans?
1 Roach-Master 2018-11-17
Based.
Also the title is a bit wrong. He got fired around 9 months later, and his show wasn't doing well to begin with so it's likely he was going to get sacked anyway.
1 CirqueDuFuder 2018-11-17
He most definitely got shit canned for that individual show. There was a concerted effort to fuck with him and advertisers dropped him left and right. People were not happy over that. The show very quickly became very unprofitable.
1 Roach-Master 2018-11-17
I'm just parroting what he said on a podcast lmao, you could be right. I'm sure 9 months was the time til he got sacked, but at least the man himself claims he was doing shit anyway.
1 CirqueDuFuder 2018-11-17
Hmm well I was a fan of the show and I remember the news being pretty relentless on ripping on the man that calls American soldiers cowards right after 9-11. It was not the greatest time to be brave with your shit talking about America. I don't know how you could even top that short of making a speech in Hawaii in 1941 celebrating the genius and bravery in Japanese strategy.
1 Roach-Master 2018-11-17
If the media is shitting on you, do you really sack the controversial man or soak up the view numbers (and then maybe sack him)? I mean we have social media now and so in 2018 it's the former, but I'm not so sure if they'd sack him immediately back in the 00s.
Again though, you could be right. Obviously Maher isn't the most reliable narrator on the issue.
1 -Kite-Man- 2018-11-17
During the 12 months after 9/11, you sacked him without that being question.
Which isn't even really a question if you were around for 9/11. Child.
1 Roach-Master 2018-11-17
I love how you downplay 12 months lmao.
1 -Kite-Man- 2018-11-17
Uh...what do you think "downplay" means?
I brought it up, frontloaded it and everything I said is conditionally based upon it. Have you even graduated from high school yet?
I'm over 30, so, yup.
1 Roach-Master 2018-11-17
Sweaty, I hope you know this has nothing to do with downplaying something.
Well I'm sorry to hear that.
1 -Kite-Man- 2018-11-17
The other two things I said right before that sort of do.
So what do you think "downplaying" means?

1 CirqueDuFuder 2018-11-17
The problem was it is broadcast tv. Their only way to make money is ads. There was no ad money for the show. It was not just controversy from angry blue checkers like you see today. It was a concerted boycott of companies dropping his ass and more wanting to be attached to him. ABC isn't a charity. They made no money from it versus alternatives.

1 _narrows 2018-11-17
We might actually be able to figure some shit out because we both know we are idiots and assholes… There’s nowhere to go but up
1 Methmo 2018-11-17
Say what you want about the guy, at least he isn't cowardly.
1 RichEvansSextape 2018-11-17
Trying to fistfight the bouncer at a stripclub isn't bravery, it's being stupid
1 Wheretheflowersgrow 2018-11-17
Flying a plane into a building for a god you think is real is pretty fucking brave. I've never understood why people call suicide bombers cowards.
1 Methmo 2018-11-17
Because when it comes to Public Enemies, people cannot distinguish denying something bad about them from taking their side.
1 rockidol 2018-11-17
He said the people in the planes weren’t cowards, and they weren’t. A coward wouldn’t go kamikaze. He wasn’t praising their mission or saying they were good people.
1 CirqueDuFuder 2018-11-17
You are a coward for killing off innocent people that aren't fighting you back.
1 old_grumpy_grandpa 2018-11-17
Killing yourself doesn't take that much bravery, judging by suicide rates, and not having to see the result of your actions doesn't strike me as especially corageous either.
1 onenight1234 2018-11-17

1 Vurtizontal 2018-11-17
Ok extremely unpopular opinion. Stan Lee set comics back, because while similar mediums like manga ended up explorer all facets of life American comics got stuck being majorly only about superheroes. This hurt the medium comic in a way that is only now starting to recuperate from.
1 ESTLR 2018-11-17
Yeah compared to glorious Nippon and its manga, which fully explores the ways that the high scool setting can be inserted into... pretty much anything.
1 Vurtizontal 2018-11-17
You can criticize manga but lack of variety it aint. You can find popular manga about almost anything, not even niche stuff. There is a very famous series about a gay couple during the 80s american gang wars. There are popular manga about a man trying to deal with political corruption as he starts working in politics. There are manga about people that wanna play jazz.
With american comics what is selling? Spiderman # 1546?
1 ESTLR 2018-11-17
There's some really good series out there,no doubt about it,but its because the industry is not so centralized as comic books, there can come a one hit wonder type of author that gets his big break and then he wont release anything of note or hes gonna milk his series until the cows come home. Also they save costs and time by not coloring their series and how they are distributed in large books compared to flimsy comics that are what? 40-50 pages. So you can find the good stuff even on a whim.
But you cant deny that there's a ton of fluff out there.Especially the stuff that doesn't gets scanned and translated into English, shit is usually dime a dozen.
1 FearlessFlash 2018-11-17

Frank Miller is the best thing to happen to comics because how little of a shit he cares about the medium
1 Ebony_Eagle 2018-11-17
I don't understand this point.

The literary establishment is dead and rotting. Academia has murdered art. No new great works of art can be made, because we are incapable of appreciating them.
1 ComedicSans 2018-11-17
Lmfao, go home, dog. You're drunk.
1 911roofer 2018-11-17

1 911roofer 2018-11-17

1 RichEvansSextape 2018-11-17
Oh whoops, misread your comment.
Yeah, lit critique is godawful because it's sounds so much time trying to connect the dots it sucks everything interesting out of stories and boils them down to academically-proven movements and universal cliches, not unlike the spergs over at TVTropes.
1 Sarge_Ward 2018-11-17
Stan Lee was just a fan of and as such just following an already well established trend of superhero favouritism. DC Comics is much, much more at fault.

The issue is that people think comics are for (man)children. In Japan shit directed at children is of course still king, but you also have lots aiming for older and more 'normal' demographics.
1 ztwizzle 2018-11-17
Gee, I wonder what could have given them that idea
1 911roofer 2018-11-17
The market is small. Capes are easy to understand and easy to read. They are the simplest, dumbest concept, and thus survive. Its like that one book that should have been awesome but wasn't where Superman was the last man on Earth and had to fight twin clones of Hitler.
1 uniqueguy263 2018-11-17
Otakus are not normal lol
1 thedeevolution 2018-11-17

If they really wanted to get rid of filth they should have removed capeshit first and foremost.
1 911roofer 2018-11-17

1 FearlessFlash 2018-11-17
wrong, the comics code decades before pretty much sanatized comics to the point where only superheros comics could make money. Also the 1960s comics were pretty neat. They were in real time. Stan Lee even said he would keep aging the characters until they died and then he would write adventures for the next generation of heros. like Spiderman was only in high school for 2 years real time. 13 years in college, and the last 40 years in his 20s
1 ZMowlcher 2018-11-17
No comics talk about really good stuff, the problem is how western culture has taken certain aspects like diversity and progressiveness and made them into the focal point of everything. Look at the story where Kraven impersonates Spiderman, or the dark knight series. Blame corporates trying to appeal to everyone instead of focusing their attention on a few topics.
Also check out non marvel and dc comics they're great.
1 SpuddersTheDuck 2018-11-17
1 Marky_Merc 2018-11-17
Brian Lee OMalley made western graphic novels mega popular again for awhile and it was about growing up and romance instead of superheroes.

Lol, it’s like he doesn’t know that the comicbook community is largely liberal and hate Trump.
1 poopy_pant_poster 2018-11-17
this is the same comicbook community that had an aneurism when they made comics about a black spiderman and a woman thor?
1 911roofer 2018-11-17
Woman Thor was hot garbage, though. The industry is mostly elderly, in spirit if not in body, white leftist males trying to appeal to young women so they can fuck them at this point. Its embarrassing.
1 poopy_pant_poster 2018-11-17
as i recall, the backlash was certainly not "this comic is not high quality enough"

Last I checked, Miles Morales is actually pretty well liked by the fans currently. Riri Williams (black female Iron Man) on the other hand, is not, from what I've seen at least.

What kind of name is riri

I want to see Alan Moore, Neil Gaimen, and Grant Morrison ritually rape, murder, and sacrifice Bill Maher to their dark gods. And then Frank Miller just stabs his corpse with a katana while Rob Liefeld sits in the corner in shame.
1 jaja10 2018-11-17
that's implying frank miller and alan moore wouldn't stab each other first
