But the hate that drove so much of the atrocities of WWII is still here and, in bitter irony, the reaction to the game depicting it has shown that it still lingers as much today as it did back then.
It feels funny until you read Joshua Green’s Devil’s Bargain, where he details how Steve Bannon saw GamerGate as inspiration for weaponizing online outrage that eventually, among other things, led to Donald Trump storming the White House.
Is this actually news to you? Steve Bannon used to run RuneScape gold rackets and pwn children out of their parents money before he became such a recognizable political figure. He's had his finger on the pulse of the cringey alt-right punk wannabe gaymer subculture for decades now.
gamergate literally did cast the first domino to get trump elected. i actually dont know how anyone can disagree with that. gamergate is what brought milo, akkon, and steve bannon. it was the beginning of the culture war.
If you think GamerGate was the beginning of the culture war you're either 15 or spent the last 30+ years in a coma.
All GamerGate did was present another opportunity for people to be on the wrong side of a media controversy and further crater public trust in the press.
obama getting elected was the very start, but it was just politics. not a culture war with a vengeance that got trump. insulting me does not prove your arugment.
trump ran with hating ont he media. gamergate was about media misrepresenting shit and having an agenda.
first time I heard the term "culture war" was during W's first term. that was the beginning of the christian right and the tea party which kicked off this whole dramatic era
wow. you really are naive. that is literally how politics is in usa with a 2 tier party system. it's the same thing bill clinton did with democrats with neoliberals, they change the party not create a new one. trump just did it with republicans. completely separate from culture war. wow.
literally no idea what you're saying in this comment? or responding to? but I recommend you take an aspirin because I think you might be suffering an attack of some sort
That wasn't even the beginning, the Dubya-era Christian Right was just a new manifestation of the Moral Majority Reaganites from the 80's when old timers were in a tizzy over devil music.
Trump one with fentanyl addicted generic rural republican voters who were just more excited about him than Romney or Cruz, you're giving too much credit to this internet shit
margin was thin enough for it to have been a hair on the camels broken back. Then again the kind of people who recognize the noun "gamergate" as a word probably add up to less than half a percent of the voting population.
"gamergate" as a word probably add up to less than half a percent of the voting population.
I know a Video Game Playing pot smoking senate hearing watching guy who didn't know what gamergate was ( I didn't bring it up or talk about it thank god it was just something in a youtube title while we were high)
TBH I unironically think gamergate had an effect on video games and was just another factor that led to the increasing polarization of many new vidyas. You didn't see shit like battlefield v or womyn "empowerment" ever before 2014.
Even when it was done in the past it was low key. Fable 2 had a butch bad ass chick that most players I know liked quite well.
That shit comes out today there would be 4 articles on how important she is to gaming, 2 on how she should have been black, and 5 videos about how she’s secretly a tranny.
This is exactly it. Now that video games have officially entered The Culture Wars, every game is making a statement whether they like it or not. So now they have to be SUPER FUCKING EXPLICIT that they aren’t nazis, or else they’ll be subject to hundreds of thinkpiece “”””articles”””” about how the game promotes nazism
Remember when gog used a hashtag wrong and a few """journalists""" went ballistic? If people would just realized saying shut up faggot worked we'd lived in a much better world.
That lowkey happened when several major publishers decided some of the more yappy outlets weren't worthy of free review copies anymore. The passive-aggressive whining Kotaku engages in about it is pretty lulzy.
You know who really seems nervous is Ubisoft lol, they always had a title card before the Assassin's Creed games that read like (This game has been made by a team of various religious beliefs) but now they've added like six more descriptors to that statement.
I thought it was cool at first because the early games focused a lot on religion, it was the more recent games that just made me feel like they're trying to cover their own asses in case they offend anyone
He's definitely a nashvillian. I swear the amount of randos that go out in the nightlife to and want to talk about politics just so they can sniff each other's farts has gone up exponentially. We used to be the town of music snobs and sniffed each other's farts about that.
I love how they try to create a sort of “behind enemy lines” implication, when hardly anyone around him probably cares that he’s in a political minority 😂
In W.B. Yeats’s haunting poem, “Second Coming,” the narrator talks about technology swirling out of control and how the world crumbles around him. While the poem is about WWI it can apply just as much to WWII (one can argue the World Wars were really one big war with a long interlude). It’s hard not to feel echoes of that in all this in how under the nose of many, a technology designed as not much more than an elaborate toy and the forums to discuss those that play with them became weapons of hate, while those in control of both either seem ineffective or unwilling to do anything significant against it.
Way to let everyone know you wrote this article because you're seethingly mad that this is the only job you could get with your English degree.
Audible managed to distill that into an advert with a 'stupid' chimpanzee playing on his phone and a 'smart' chimpanzee listening to an audio book of Harry Potter.
> Women and minorities on the battlefield of World War II? Those aren’t in the history books, they said. Of course they actually are, and what’s not in the history book is that soldiers got shot, hid in a bush and regenerated their health, but you’ll never see complaints about that.

Sorry for serious-posting, but these retards always draw this analogy as if there's no difference between a historically-authentic setting (which people want) and authentic game mechanics (which they don't).
Because computers are not powerful enough to simulate thousands of playable characters at same time. That's reason for respawn in such games. We're nowhere near technologically to have true simulations.
i feel like this bit does more to take the wind out of the “history” argument than pointing out the fact that historical accuracy makes things tedious and awful
Idk, I think there's a balance here. I think it would be cool to explore what those other groups did during the war, but it is kind of silly to completely fabricate things. It's sorta hard to make something that takes place that long ago and still make it acceptable for a wider audience.
RDR 2 did it pretty well I think, at first I thought it was weird that a gang of outlaws 120 years ago was so progressive and racially diverse but then you find out that Dutch mostly built up his gang out of the outcasts of society and also manipulated people like the natives.
Sorry for serious-posting, but these retards always draw this analogy as if there's no difference between a historically-authentic setting (which people want) and authentic game mechanics (which they don't).
People who write articles about video games don't actually play video games.
The reaction to Battlefield V’s reveal was harsh, but not unpredictable. It echoed the GamerGate controversy, where people dressed up their obvious issues with women as concerns about “ethics in journalism,”
Mussolini did, but no one gives a shit about him either.
but the French, the Brits and obviously the Americans all used black troops in both World Wars. the Italians tried to get some blacks in WW1, too, and the Belgians considered it, but they thought better of it
That would make sense. I've seen a lot of people distance themselves from that crowd. But it seems like their vocal minority is getting louder and becoming a bigger percentage of the group. It seems like the only people that take them seriously is other radicals though so that's good.
I think people just wanted to by another shitty battlefield game, not get dragged into culture war #83875302197842-A. Everything is woke and problematic, and people on the right also need this shit because their youtube income is based on "feminazi bastards are REKT under the POWER of a 4 foot 8 manlet JEW, CLAP AND REPOST MAGA HAT WINNING!!".
Its a shitty media culture that feeds its own reason to exist, its just bollocks. This sub is here to mock it, not fucking fall for the trappings of outrage media.
TBH my biggest problem with the game are the bugs, real annoying shit that stops your week based event progress, quitting a match, progressing unlockables etc.
the title women has hair and you can't even put fucking hair on females in the game.
Everyone arguing about how the Chinese were in the war in WWII and that's why it's okay to play as them hasn't actually played the game because your skin color doesn't affect how you talk lol
To those on the outside, it all may seem strange and surreal. Maybe less so with how strange and surreal our everyday life has become, but still, we’re talking about video games. An artform still in its infancy where polygons crafted to look like people shift around in simulated environments. What is the all the fuss about, and why is it that a group of people take it so seriously to such a visceral response?
What they really meant:
To those who're not retarded, it all may seem dumb and pointless. Maybe less so with how the internet has poisoned every day life, but still, we're talking about interactive video toys. A habit forming product still in its infancy where polygons ARE NOT REAL PEOPLE IN NON REAL SCENARIOS THAT NEVER HAPPENED. Literally, who gives a fucking fuck, and why is this group of goobers doing the thing they always do, sperging on the internet.

i mean hell, they were already drafting blacks for colonial forces in WWI, and II was half in Asia
1 squishles 2019-01-03
no one gives a shit about africa.
1 grungebot5000 2019-01-03
Mussolini did, but no one gives a shit about him either.
but the French, the Brits and obviously the Americans all used black troops in both World Wars. the Italians tried to get some blacks in WW1, too, and the Belgians considered it, but they thought better of it
1 badcatsgotohell 2019-01-03
But there's nothing different in Africa now. We want to fantasize about being in a war, in Africa you can just go down the street.
1 pugba 2019-01-03
in the US you can go to school if you fantasise about war

In the EU just look for rapefugees
1 Unbansawsage 2019-01-03
I'm confused, there where women and minority's in bf1 and no controversy? I don't know, I've been staying away from most of the discussion
1 grungebot5000 2019-01-03
i think the anti-SJW crowd is just more sensitive/fragile now than they were back then
1 Unbansawsage 2019-01-03
That would make sense. I've seen a lot of people distance themselves from that crowd. But it seems like their vocal minority is getting louder and becoming a bigger percentage of the group. It seems like the only people that take them seriously is other radicals though so that's good.
1 Ebony_Eagle 2019-01-03
I don't see anyone complaining about Africa or Asia being shown in a WW2 game.
I know I've pushed for more of the actual unseen parts of the war.
1 grungebot5000 2019-01-03
i mean, they were in europe too though, I mean
1 SkipperPauline 2019-01-03
I think people just wanted to by another shitty battlefield game, not get dragged into culture war #83875302197842-A. Everything is woke and problematic, and people on the right also need this shit because their youtube income is based on "feminazi bastards are REKT under the POWER of a 4 foot 8 manlet JEW, CLAP AND REPOST MAGA HAT WINNING!!".
Its a shitty media culture that feeds its own reason to exist, its just bollocks. This sub is here to mock it, not fucking fall for the trappings of outrage media.

Thank you.

That's a WW II game? I thought it was some steam punk thing based on the cover.
1 Imgur_Lurker 2019-01-03
TBH my biggest problem with the game are the bugs, real annoying shit that stops your week based event progress, quitting a match, progressing unlockables etc.
the title women has hair and you can't even put fucking hair on females in the game.
Everyone arguing about how the Chinese were in the war in WWII and that's why it's okay to play as them hasn't actually played the game because your skin color doesn't affect how you talk lol
1 xXEpicGamer69Xx 2019-01-03
that would be way cooler tbh
1 BumwineBaudelaire 2019-01-03
pretty much the problem in a nutshell
1 Unkill_is_dill 2019-01-03
r/Battlefield is somehow more whiny than r/Witcher and that's quite an achievement.
