For some reason I felt so uneasy about her being there, something just wasn’t right. So I turned to the gentleman to tell him to have a good night and to enjoy his sub, hoping he could read the concern in my eyes. He most definitely did. He then proceeded to whisper so very quietly, “is anyone else with you in here?” I say, “no sir.” He nodded and said out loud so the woman would be able to hear I guess; “I will be waiting in here until my ride arrives. If that’s okay?” I said sure that’s fine.
I’ve never had that happen to me before, and I’m not referring to the situation with the woman. I mean I’ve never experienced another man being able to understand my concern by simply looking at my face, and then proceeding to stay, for just another 5 minutes until he’s sure I’m safe. It was the most reassuring and wholesome thing I’ve ever felt. After he said that I had to step to the back for a bit to refrain from her seeing my tears welling up in my eyes. But I got myself together and stepped out to the front. He didn’t know me, he didn’t have to do that for me, but he did anyways. I’m forever thankful. After the gal left we chatted for a bit and laughed some.

Having worked in retail/convince stores 9/10 people asking to use a store phone are broke addicts without a cell phone plan that say they’re calling a ride or their girlfriend but immediately start setting up a deal.
Of course I worked at a gas station that sold booze and drug paraphernalia so it probably drew a different crowd.
But I don’t think OP is some crazy harpy for getting a bad vibe from some sketchy rando hustling in to use the phone.
Also not uncommon at all for decent people to linger behind to keep an eye on odd customers when a girl is working by herself.

I have gone into stores to ask for phones multiple times over the course of my life when its been out of battery and its always been fine, the last time the guy there happily gave me his mobile and asked to put my phone in their charger while I was there.

I don’t want it to be me, I don’t want my loved ones going through what you described. I think about myself going through what you did and I don’t think I’d be able to handle it. I don’t have very many people in my life, but the ones I do love me very very much. I imagine the face on my little sister who’s always looked up to me, and loves me more than a sister can love a brother. I imagine my other baby sister growing up without me, not knowing who I was and how sad she would get from my sister telling her stories about how much I loved her, and how I left her behind alone.
Most of all I picture my mom, who would give her soul if it meant life would be just a little easier for me. And how crushed she would be to lose me.
I can’t take it. It’s too much to know they’d hurt that much. I just can’t fucking take it.
