Eh, I don't know about that. The main reason you see reparations talk in a democratic primary is that you often have multiple people competing for the black vote, which is very important in a Democratic primary.
When you have multiple black candidates, the whole reparation angle is just to maybe give you an edge. But yeah, they're all well aware that reparations are a political trainwreck and will lose you a general election.

Specialization and tradescraft existed beforehand, but not nearly to the degree it did when Industrialization started. And the reason it grew was because goods coming from the South and Caribbean gave the nation surplus, meaning less need for labourers to do subsistence work.
Maybe, but slavery still continued long after whatever use it may have had, especially in America, where I'd argue it def went obsolete during the huge population boom after independence.
oh it absolutley did. Thats why abolishment was such an important issue throughout the early and mid 1800s: Slavery had now outgrown its usefullness, was not as profitable as the wage labour system that was fast approaching to overtake it, and as well was an international embarrassment.
Right as soon as the Revolution was well on its way slavery was no longer arguable from even an economic standpoint, only from a cultural one for the South. Slavery really should have been abolished right then and there, but the less industrialized south believed that doing so would give the North total economic, and thus soon cultural, dominance over the whole country, southern states included.
But that point that slavery became impractical during the 19th century does not diminish the fact that its use in the centuries prior did much to help create the Industrialized society of the 19th century to begin with.

We've known since adam smith and probably before that slavery is a weaker economic model than free workers. Turns out giving your laborers a small chunk of the fruits of their labor makes them work more productively and they're better able to live under their wages than you are at managing their living accommodations. No one is claiming slaves didn't work but the output of their labor was not increased because of slavery but rather decreased.
And my point is that Smith's theories, and the creation of the free labourer class, would not have come to fruition if not for the Atlantic Slave Trade system creating the conditions that allowed for the Industrial Revolution to occur to begin with.

What I meant to say is that selling one's own labour for the production of goods, industrial and factory goods specifically, moved society from the more-or-less still feudalistic, subsistence-focused economic system towards the system of capitalism. People didn't, couldn't do this back before the boom occurred, because there was not yet a level of surplus that could sustain people being able to work these sorts of industries. There's a reason why well over 95% of workers were agricultural until the 1800s started to roll around.
And what largely led to this surplus, that which other places like China or Japan didn't really have, was the extra production created by having overseas colonies.
Don't take this at full face value though. Its not a full story by any means, and there are some in the academic field who would critique this interpretation.

Oh I'm not meaning to do that, and looking at it I think I may have accidentally done so. By no means is it a full story. But I would argue it is absolutley one of the largest factors, especially for explaining how Britian got it before the rest of the globe. But factors like an abundance of coal on the island, higher per capita earnings, and even factors like the Protestant Work ethic and the Enlightenment movement towards secularism and concepts such as private property all have a fair claim for assisting in this Industrial development.
I don't have nearly enough understanding myself to say that capitalism's development was near inevitable, but I am mostly in the camp of believing that to be so. The movement towards it in a lot of socieities of the era, even those non-colonial ones, and even those ones outside of the eastern continent, all seem to point that to be so. I do believe you to be right on that point. I mostly just think those previously mentioned factors, and the slave trade surplus especially, were some of the biggest factors causing it to happen as soon as it did and where it did.

The original reorganization of modern western society into the capitalist economy originated in Britain, which did so because of the surplus cotton from its colonies. I don't think thats an ahistorical take. Britian is always defined as being the first industrial society, and this argument I'm using is essentially the thesis of Pomeranz's 'The Great Divergence.'

The Industrial Boom (revolution) gave birth to both the technologies and the economic system that would foster these more efficient sytems. The wage labour capitalist system that is now (much) more efficient than slave labour was essentially only birthed out of Slavery's levitation of Britain's need for subsistence growth. Specialization and tradescraft existed beforehand, but not nearly to the degree it did when Industrialization started. And the reason it grew was because goods coming from the South and Caribbean gave the nation surplus, meaning less need for labourers to do subsistence work.

oh it absolutley did. Thats why abolishment was such an important issue throughout the early and mid 1800s: Slavery had now outgrown its usefullness, was not as profitable as the wage labour system that was fast approaching to overtake it, and as well was an international embarrassment.
Right as soon as the Revolution was well on its way slavery was no longer arguable from even an economic standpoint, only from a cultural one for the South. Slavery really should have been abolished right then and there, but the less industrialized south believed that doing so would give the North total economic, and thus soon cultural, dominance over the whole country, southern states included.
But that point that slavery became impractical during the 19th century does not diminish the fact that its use in the centuries prior did much to help create the Industrialized society of the 19th century to begin with.

fair point, but one might argue that the means for which to discover these new technologies would be more difficult to obtain without the surplus economy created by the colonies moving people away from agricultural occupations. If the population is still largely stuck to farming products for subsistence or for basic inter-community trade, there isn't much in the ways of time and material for people to mass produce great innovative strives.

We've known since adam smith and probably before that slavery is a weaker economic model than free workers. Turns out giving your laborers a small chunk of the fruits of their labor makes them work more productively and they're better able to live under their wages than you are at managing their living accommodations. No one is claiming slaves didn't work but the output of their labor was not increased because of slavery but rather decreased.

What I meant to say is that selling one's own labour for the production of goods, industrial and factory goods specifically, moved society from the more-or-less still feudalistic, subsistence-focused economic system towards the system of capitalism. People didn't, couldn't do this back before the boom occurred, because there was not yet a level of surplus that could sustain people being able to work these sorts of industries. There's a reason why well over 95% of workers were agricultural until the 1800s started to roll around.
And what largely led to this surplus, that which other places like China or Japan didn't really have, was the extra production created by having overseas colonies.

You're right you don't. It would have been better for both the economy and from a moral perspective for slavery to have not been used, but unfortunately the global trade economy has a lot of roots in the transatlantic slave trade.
Oh I'm not meaning to do that, and looking at it I think I may have accidentally done so. By no means is it a full story. But I would argue it is absolutley one of the largest factors, especially for explaining how Britian got it before the rest of the globe. But factors like an abundance of coal on the island, higher per capita earnings, and even factors like the Protestant Work ethic and the Enlightenment movement towards secularism and concepts such as private property all have a fair claim for assisting in this Industrial development.
I don't have nearly enough understanding myself to say that capitalism's development was near inevitable, but I am mostly in the camp of believing that to be so. The movement towards it in a lot of socieities of the era, even those non-colonial ones, and even those ones outside of the eastern continent, all seem to point that to be so. I do believe you to be right on that point. I mostly just think those previously mentioned factors, and the slave trade surplus especially, were some of the biggest factors causing it to happen as soon as it did and where it did.

Industrialization in those other places only did so by following suit with the British Industrial Revolution. The original reorganization of modern western society into the capitalist economy originated in Britain, which did so because of the surplus cotton from its colonies. I don't think thats an ahistorical take. Britian is always defined as being the first industrial society, and this argument I'm using is essentially the thesis of Pomeranz's 'The Great Divergence.'
