[Seriouspost] Why is it that so many portrayals of characters are criticized for being offensive but Mini-me from Austin Powers received little to no backlash?
58 2019-03-05 by MasterLawlz
I mean really, this genuinely boggles my mind. There are a lot of movies and shows that get absolutely shredded in the media for how they portray women/gay people/people of a certain ethnic group but Mini-Me was a million times more dehumanizing than almost any other character I could think of but the general public seemed to care very little at all.
Don't get me wrong, it was funny as shit but it's sort of hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that an intelligent human being with thoughts and feelings had to actually rehearse those scenes. There's literally a scene in one of them where Dr. Evil had him on a leash and said "Oh I caught me a marlin!" as he tugged back on the leash like a fishing rod to keep Mini-me from ravenously eating some chocolate like an animal.
He literally could not even speak and was often thrown around like a rag doll for laughs, lol. I really don't think you could have degraded the guy more than they did if you tried. If you had portrayed any other group even a fraction as bad as they did him, it would have been a PR nightmare but I guess the studio figured it was still funny just because he's small.

How much do you have to be molested as a child by your father to become a forum janitor that makes garbage posts thinking he’s funny?
1 MasterLawlz 2019-03-05
well in my case not at all, so maybe it's more like a birth defect than childhood trauma

James Earl Jones is racist?
1 Bteatesthighlander1 2019-03-05
wasn't twenty years ago the height of political correctness (round 1)?
1 Honk4Tits 2019-03-05
No mid 80s, when they were trying to find hidden satanic verses in Cyndi Lauper music.
1 Bteatesthighlander1 2019-03-05
that's not political correctness its Christian correctness. teh Satanic Panic was just a different thing.
Satanic panic is based on the idea that indisputably negative things that (almost certainly) weren't happening were
Political correctness is founded on the idea that disputably negative things are actually indisputably negative.
1 Honk4Tits 2019-03-05
You are right but it was an era of heavy censorship and policing.
1 cheers_grills 2019-03-05
Same thing, just 20 years apart.

Different type
Christian puritans had no issue with a Star Wars alien being a big nosed money grubbing merchant speaking in broken english

Depends how you define it. Compared to now a days the whole of the 90's and 00's were problematic. Like go watch some stand up from mainstream enough comedians from those years, majority of them would be strung up by woke twitter these days.
1 unbanwoodser 2019-03-05
Go watch Ace Ventura.
1 bott04 2019-03-05
Please define a r/drama boomer, don’t you mean GenX as boomers are 45-65 and GenXers are 65-80? And GenXers were the harbingers of everything you hold dear.
1 BlessThisBussy 2019-03-05
I think because it was a different time, people didn't go out of their way to be offended and woke twitter wasn't around to tell the masses why its bad.
1 Think_Once 2019-03-05
No. It's just that no one takes manlets serious. You can make fun of them, even nowadays.

This. Because we never learn.

Exactly.

More interestingly the guy “Random Task” who throws the shoe at Powers used to run rape trains (not on Lawlz’s sluttty mom she was already up for it) on thots and apparently killed someone. His police interview is on YouTube.

Yep. He was also a fighter in the early ufc. Lost all of his fights, including one by "terror."

Lmao I gotta research this guy

Imagine your working at a fast food place, tending to a customer, it's your one dream to meet your hero, Austin Powers, nothing out of the ordinary. Slowly you start to hear the "Austin Powers theme song" slowly start to get louder and louder. Just before the music really kicks in, several hundred Austin Powers impersonators bust through the front door, constantly quoting the films. As they run through the restaurant, a sudden fear rushes through you. The ones in the front of the mob leap over the counter. One grabs your apron. With a quick, "Oh behave!" He rips off you're work attire. It's clear what they're here for, to fulfill their pathological need to shag. You swiftly run to the back of the establishment. The theme song growing louder behind you. You come to the back door. Turning around you see the crowd of Austins draw closer with a "smashing, baby!" They destroy the restaurant as they blow through. You open the back door, locking it behind you. You run a solid 20 feet before realizing you're safe. The patrons may not have met the same pleasant fate.as you. As you're catching your breath, you hear them pounding on the door. You're paralyzed by fear as the pounding grows louder. Finally the pounding stops, despite this, fear over comes your body. The silence is broken by a yell of a "Judo Chop!" The door swings open the crowd of Austin Powers' flood the door along with one confused man dressed as shrek. At this time you realize this is no dream, but a nightmare.

It was the 90s. Also midgets don't seem to get the SJW defense treatment (other than mild reeee'ing about the word itself), probably because it's just a physical disorder rather than a mental one? Wonder if there are more trannys than midgets per capita.
We need to get Peter Dinklige and Wee Man in MAGA hats, gauge the reaction.
1 bott04 2019-03-05
Mini-me and dwarf tossing are SJW approved.
1 McFluffTheCrimeCat 2019-03-05
2.The character had less to do with midgets and more to do with a bad clone job.
The internet wasn’t what it is now where it was as easy to gather large enough to groups to actual complain about things like that.
When are you reviewing billy and Mandy?

They never had much of a voice, we cant hear them from up here but seriously all dwarf roles were basically jokes for a long time, he was nothing new it wasnt until my boy tyrion that we had a mainstream famous dwarf character that was completely serious.

Little people don’t care they just want to work. Time bandits was a great movie. Their roles aren’t condescending generally.
1 HardIsLife 2019-03-05
Nobody here is old like you! We haven’t seen Austin Powers!

Was a different time my friend.
Imagine if they made a movie like any of the American Pie movies today.
Twitter would be like “yikes yall this is problematic. We cannot normalize this.”
1 elksandturkeys 2019-03-05
Why are we still allowing this content(trash)?
1 MasterLawlz 2019-03-05
Because it’s what the people want
1 throwaway-familyhelp 2019-03-05
We're in a dark age for actual comedy movies. Maybe eventually we can have a renaissance where someone is allowed to actually make something offensive and funny again.
1 CPT_Clarnence 2019-03-05
Because midgets aren't people.
It's like saying Lassie is offensive for the way it plays into stereotypes about border collies.
1 Tony_Danza_the_boss 2019-03-05
Because short people have and always will be made fun of, regardless of ethnicity. Somehow it’s always been appropriate
1 strathmeyer 2019-03-05
A character doing something is different than a real person doing something. The same can be applied to the term "being ironic." This is what happens when you don't differentiate between fact and fiction
