Lol if you tell your English major girlfriend that she sucks at writing and will be a failure as an author you’re definitely an asshole. You might be right, but you’re still an asshole.
It is neither tactful or polite to help maintain someone's harmful illusions about the world and themselves, or to lie to them about what you really think about important life choices. Otherwise you're just selfishly avoiding conflict for your own benefit, to their detriment in the long run.
It's not tactful or polite to help maintain someone's harmful illusions about themselves or the world, nor to hide your true feelings about their important life decisions.

Actually believing this guy is being honest to his gf
Imagine believing this bullshit AITA post.
He's not trying to help her break her delusions - he's just trying to keep fucking her. He's not worried about her - he's worried that he's gonna be hitched to a poor pussy and isn't man enough to say "this isn't what I want - I'm out". He'd rather convince her to change so he doesn't have to.
We're all allowed to make shitty decisions - anyone who posts to /r/Drama should know that. If he doesn't like her shitty life choices then GTFO and quit pretending to care just to avoid a dry spell.
Yes. He's telling her he thinks her life choices are shitty. This is true regardless whether it's because she is delusional about her prose creation ability, or she has made a sub-optimal choice of partner. I don't know these people to say which is a better description of reality but I can say with confidence she has been empowered by greater knowledge as a result of his actions.
Lol yeah, my friend's wife was in massive debt when they married, racked up even more debt for the $15,000 wedding she insisted on, and didn't want to work since she planned to be the next Stephenie Meyer. They ended up having to move in with his parents. This shit happens in real life, and it ain't pretty. You have to have a firm hand with foids. Be like, "Oh, we got JK Rowling over here! Why don't you Rowl your ass to the temp agency and pull your own weight, ya freak bitch?"
Oh she was and is a red flag factory. Much of this was medical debt from a sick cat that she bought despite already being in massive debt. She had to give it up because she was hemorrhaging money. When she worked at a vet clinic, she surprised him by bringing home a puppy and a kitten on separate occasions without even texting him first. The puppy is a fucking border collie/whippet mix. The kitten was so insane that they had to put it on Prozac and eventually give it up. But he's doing it for pussy, right? Nope, she has "low libido" and never put out even before they got married, so I can't imagine how bad it is now. He puts up with all this for true love. He justifies the dead bedroom by saying she's "chill", and he likes marathoning Harry Potter movies with her. Foids don't deserve moids, frankly.
Some people just don’t hear you unless you’re very blunt though. Especially the ones with artistic stardom type dreams (music, art, music and acting) which are quite frankly moonshots. It’s probably because of the lack of weed out events in either the classroom or life in general, but also because the industry relies on the oversupply to keep costs down. The fact that so many want to become writers allows big name publishers to pay in exposure and in some cases *charge you for the privilege *.
I don’t think it’s asshole to be blunt about this. Personally, I’d issue it more like a challenge— like have you ever gotten published or won a writing contest (or the equivalent in your chosen art) then chances are good that you won’t live off of art. They won’t let you give it away you won’t sell it either.
On that sub being an asshole is sticking up for yourself. My favorite threads there are the “I just told the guy who has bullied and beat me out for years to STFU AITA?” And then everyone dogpiles the OP on how much worse they are than the bully and “two wrongs don’t make a right”
In all seriousness, you don’t tell a newbie they’ll never make it. It takes creative artists 20 years to break through. It’s way too soon to be telling her she won’t succeed. Louis CK talked about how was complete trash up until his 30s then he just ‘got it’ and everything took off from there.
No lol. It really isn't. If you want to support some idiot woman's lack of talent go right ahead but functional adults can discuss the realities of life without their fragile egos being shot to pieces
I too think it's unfair that "nigger" is taboo, but "cracker/honky/whitey" is not. And I think it's dumb that black people can use the most terrible word in the English language to CALL each other, even though no other race does that!! When comedians are onstage, it's perfectly natural to laugh when the black comedian says "whitey/Redneck." But when a white person calls a black person "nigger," lawsuits are filed, and all hell breaks loose. But for all you white people who'd rather play it safe...Black = preferred, African-American = annoying, but still not offensive, Nigger = offensive to Black people who are NOT niggers whether it's said by a white or black person.
hes not an asshole at all. being a good writer nor an english major will help you find success in being an author. people have no fucking clue how much garbage is sent to publishing companies. being a successful author such as the next jk rowling is the femoid equivalent of playing mega millions.
Oh, I getcha. Yeah I agree with that. I don't think it stops you from being a good writer (and of course someone who wanted to write would also be interested in English Literature), but all the best authors usually had totally unrelated degrees and jobs.
YTA YTA YTA! JK Rowling’s husband left her because he didn’t believe in her.
Edit I made a mistake, Jk Rowlings left her first husband because of domestic violence. She divorced her first husband in 1994 and finished writing the manucript of Harry potter in 1995.
It's where the fake posters went after they got bored with /r/relationships and /r/legaladvice. It's much more popular because as it turns out redditors don't really want to give advice, they just like feeling superior to some asshole on the internet.
Do these retards understand how many books get published only to have them sell under 500 copies? The majority of fucking books, it’s why publishers don’t print new authors, it’s all digital. Odds of being a successful author are slim to none. Bringing up 50 shades and Harry Potter like it’s the norm 🤔
It's like those kids who drop out of college to become SoundCloud rappers. They think they're gonna be the next Lil Bo Peep or whatever the fuck without realizing for every big artist there's 5,000+ artists on SoundCloud with 15 followers.
i read something recently about how in the height of Stephen King, he could put out a garbage tier book and sell more copies of that than all the other books published that year combined.
Same with paterson, rowling and other name brand authors. Its a game of recognition and thats it.
Exactly why I told my ex to forget it when she was looking at doing the Amazon self publishing shit. I felt bad cause she was genuinely trying, but the amount of money it cost versus what she could make back was terrible
You've got to start small. Write some short stories and submit them to literary magazines and journals. Chances are you still won't get published, and even if you do you won't make any money, but at least you will be out there. Once you've got some short stories published maybe (maybe!) a publisher will look more seriously at any novels you write, but that's unlikely too.
The trick is to say you aren't in it for the money so that when none comes you don't look like a failure, just a hobbyist.
Uh no, I know this sub has irrational hatred for everything, but this dude is completely wrong in thinking that its impossible to become an author. You idiots just see JK Rowling and start going "hurr hurr wandshit hurr hurr look at me, my taste is better than everyone hurr"
Imagine how that sub would react if it was a girl and her boyfriend said he wanted to be a professional video game streamer for a living. They'd probably (correctly) call him a lazy bum who needs to step out of fantasy land and get a real job
Is he being an asshole? Absolutely. But he's not wrong that most artists can't actually support themselves on artistic careers so it's not a bad idea to have a back-up plan.
That's not what he's saying though. He thinks no one can be an author and basically thinks his GF should completely give it up, not have a backup, just give it up
But you're comparing writing novels to streaming video games, which is a stupid comparison. Nobody is majoring in playing video games, but his girl has focused her studies and her life, in a sense, in English and has ambitions to be an author.
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with streaming video games, but equating the career prospects of playing pre-made predictable games all day and writing works unique to her mind are different things. Both are meritocratic in nature, which as about as far as the comparison goes.
Nobody is majoring in playing video games, but his girl has focused her studies and her life, in a sense, in English and has ambitions to be an author.
Lmao imagine thinking that going into tens of thousands of dollars worth of debt makes your retarded dreams less retarded.
Aspiring to be J.K. Rowling is obviously dumb, that goes without saying, but wishing to be a successful author isn't nearly as far fetched. There's nothing wrong with ambition. The real issue is that she shouldn't be making it her primary focus in life right now, because to do so would indeed be a major gamble of her time and money. The boyfriend handled the situation like shit, I can think of a million better ways to approach it better than he did. How far on the spectrum does a guy need to be to talk to his girl like that and think it'll be okay? Did he not know her before having this conversation?
That isn't what the guy was saying tho, he was putting down her dreams completely. Plus just because you don't make it as an author doesn't mean the skills can't be transferable to a job in the same field
YTA - What gives you the authority to say something like that to anyone? Let alone your girlfriend? And who’s to say anyway? You’re just rude, no matter.
Lol “the authority” yeah if I’m dating something that’s all the authority I need bucko.

This fucking guy who posted this is the delusional one, or just incredibly jaded. The guy is plainly in the wrong for telling his girlfriend that, wouldn't be a shocker if its just the guy posting this link from an alt lmao
Maybe unpopular opinion here, but I trust my bf 100%. I need him to be honest with me, like if my dream is to be an artist but I suck at painting I need him to tell me so then I can either put in more work to get better or maybe a new dream.
He probably could have said it nicer, like offered to help her out and maybe find extra resources to help her achieve her dream if that’s what she really wants. I count on my bf to be the one outside opinion I can always trust and count on.

The hyperlinked stuff is. The paragraph is the bot's take on the content. Post something dramatic and see for yourself.

In America "being an asshole" typically means saying the truth that someone doesn't want to hear.
Dummies will also try and conflate this with someone just being mean and say they are the same thing.
You're not really an asshole for speaking the truth. But in America you are. Especially among the sissy generations like zoomers and millenials.

1 Elite_AI 2019-05-22
Oh, I getcha. Yeah I agree with that. I don't think it stops you from being a good writer (and of course someone who wanted to write would also be interested in English Literature), but all the best authors usually had totally unrelated degrees and jobs.

let me tell you about my very original and unique vampire love story

If the asshole is lacking a feminine penis by its side, just say no. Bussy and trussy only.

1 ghostofdramafuture 2019-05-22
are they suggesting domestic abuse will help her become a better writer?
1 BernieMadeoffSanders 2019-05-22
Sometimes you just gotta beat the plot into 'em
1 Platycel 2019-05-22
It certainly won't hurt.
Metaphorically, literally it will.
1 Helter_SkeIter 2019-05-22
I mean most successful artists have gone through some sort of hardship.
1 autism_causes_autism 2019-05-22
Have you ever met a mouthy thot who wouldn't benefit from having her head put through a wall? Didn't think so.
1 AnnArchist 2019-05-22
Sometimes the abuse is worth it
1 ardasyenden 2019-05-22
is AITA a pseudo containment board for retardation?
1 Fascisteen 2019-05-22
It’s prime lulz material
1 watermark002 2019-05-22
Without AITA about 25% of all /r/drama content would immediately cease to exist. Praise AITA
1 seshfan2 2019-05-22
It's where the fake posters went after they got bored with /r/relationships and /r/legaladvice. It's much more popular because as it turns out redditors don't really want to give advice, they just like feeling superior to some asshole on the internet.
1 BlastMyBussy 2019-05-22
One hand jacking it and the other calling people inferior online. This is the Redditors purest form.
1 kalinida 2019-05-22
Snarky redditors. Wow wee
1 Captain-Tripps 2019-05-22
I hate how accurately you described my shift to AITA.
1 SlowlyDying- 2019-05-22
Do these retards understand how many books get published only to have them sell under 500 copies? The majority of fucking books, it’s why publishers don’t print new authors, it’s all digital. Odds of being a successful author are slim to none. Bringing up 50 shades and Harry Potter like it’s the norm 🤔
1 DrunkenRecidivist 2019-05-22
You probably have at least as good of a chance of being a successful shitty author as a successful good one.
1 jubbergun 2019-05-22
I think you've inspired me to be a shitty author.
1 seshfan2 2019-05-22
It's like those kids who drop out of college to become SoundCloud rappers. They think they're gonna be the next Lil Bo Peep or whatever the fuck without realizing for every big artist there's 5,000+ artists on SoundCloud with 15 followers.
1 CapitalGigi 2019-05-22
My dorm neighbor freshman year dropped out of my very prestigious university to become a screenwriter... I don't think it went as planned.
1 Corporal-Hicks 2019-05-22
i read something recently about how in the height of Stephen King, he could put out a garbage tier book and sell more copies of that than all the other books published that year combined.
Same with paterson, rowling and other name brand authors. Its a game of recognition and thats it.
1 Helter_SkeIter 2019-05-22
This is all part of redditors delusional UBI dream that everyone can be an artist or a writer or a uniform designer.
They are attacking the OP, because half the people on AITA also think they are going to be JK Rowling
1 tankatan 2019-05-22
The YA market is better at accommodating mediocrity tbh
1 SlowlyDying- 2019-05-22
IE: Hunger Games and Harry Potter
1 DrZerglingMD 2019-05-22
Exactly why I told my ex to forget it when she was looking at doing the Amazon self publishing shit. I felt bad cause she was genuinely trying, but the amount of money it cost versus what she could make back was terrible
1 Phantom_Engineer 2019-05-22
You've got to start small. Write some short stories and submit them to literary magazines and journals. Chances are you still won't get published, and even if you do you won't make any money, but at least you will be out there. Once you've got some short stories published maybe (maybe!) a publisher will look more seriously at any novels you write, but that's unlikely too.
The trick is to say you aren't in it for the money so that when none comes you don't look like a failure, just a hobbyist.
1 rdashdrama 2019-05-22
Found a fanfic author.
1 DrunkenRecidivist 2019-05-22
Paying the bills with buzzfeed blurbs
1 hammermill1 2019-05-22
Uh no, I know this sub has irrational hatred for everything, but this dude is completely wrong in thinking that its impossible to become an author. You idiots just see JK Rowling and start going "hurr hurr wandshit hurr hurr look at me, my taste is better than everyone hurr"
1 seshfan2 2019-05-22
Imagine how that sub would react if it was a girl and her boyfriend said he wanted to be a professional video game streamer for a living. They'd probably (correctly) call him a lazy bum who needs to step out of fantasy land and get a real job
Is he being an asshole? Absolutely. But he's not wrong that most artists can't actually support themselves on artistic careers so it's not a bad idea to have a back-up plan.
1 hammermill1 2019-05-22
That's not what he's saying though. He thinks no one can be an author and basically thinks his GF should completely give it up, not have a backup, just give it up
1 Elite_AI 2019-05-22
correct
and that's the arsehole move tbqh, lotta autists in this thread pretending it's being so brave and honest because they don't know what social cues are
1 d4ddyd54m4 2019-05-22
Authors don't make money and if your hoe isn't getting paid, then as her pimp neither are you. That simple enough for you sweaty?
1 Xelerons 2019-05-22
But you're comparing writing novels to streaming video games, which is a stupid comparison. Nobody is majoring in playing video games, but his girl has focused her studies and her life, in a sense, in English and has ambitions to be an author.
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with streaming video games, but equating the career prospects of playing pre-made predictable games all day and writing works unique to her mind are different things. Both are meritocratic in nature, which as about as far as the comparison goes.
1 IHeartCommyMommy 2019-05-22
Lmao imagine thinking that going into tens of thousands of dollars worth of debt makes your retarded dreams less retarded.
1 Xelerons 2019-05-22
Aspiring to be J.K. Rowling is obviously dumb, that goes without saying, but wishing to be a successful author isn't nearly as far fetched. There's nothing wrong with ambition. The real issue is that she shouldn't be making it her primary focus in life right now, because to do so would indeed be a major gamble of her time and money. The boyfriend handled the situation like shit, I can think of a million better ways to approach it better than he did. How far on the spectrum does a guy need to be to talk to his girl like that and think it'll be okay? Did he not know her before having this conversation?
1 Flipdatswitch 2019-05-22
That isn't what the guy was saying tho, he was putting down her dreams completely. Plus just because you don't make it as an author doesn't mean the skills can't be transferable to a job in the same field
1 Kaiser-romulus 2019-05-22
Lol “the authority” yeah if I’m dating something that’s all the authority I need bucko.

This fucking guy who posted this is the delusional one, or just incredibly jaded. The guy is plainly in the wrong for telling his girlfriend that, wouldn't be a shocker if its just the guy posting this link from an alt lmao
1 coleebear09 2019-05-22
Maybe unpopular opinion here, but I trust my bf 100%. I need him to be honest with me, like if my dream is to be an artist but I suck at painting I need him to tell me so then I can either put in more work to get better or maybe a new dream.
He probably could have said it nicer, like offered to help her out and maybe find extra resources to help her achieve her dream if that’s what she really wants. I count on my bf to be the one outside opinion I can always trust and count on.
1 freddiequell_ 2019-05-22

1 thajugganuat 2019-05-22
It's a great meta post since he's calling out the sub and all the aspiring writers who make shit up there's
