This is Mike Pondsmith who has been making tabletop games before anyone under the age of 37 has been alive and video games even earlier. This includes Cyberpunk2013/2020, on which an upcoming AAA game some Slavs are working on is based. The usual small but vocal minority have been quite angery over dickgirl billboards and “racist” depictions of gangs.

I’m also increasingly concerned about Cyberpunk’s handling of non-white cultures. Last year’s Gamescom demo drew criticism for its clumsy and inauthentic presentation of a Latino character, and I’m not convinced the Voodoo Boys are a step in the right direction. At one point V, the player character, mockingly says “and who are dem” in response to Placide’s pronunciation. I asked Tomaszkiewicz if he was concerned they weren’t treating certain cultures with enough respect.

“Obviously we’re paying a lot of attention to representing different groups respectfully. You know, there’s always a risk. Of course we have it in the back of our heads that we need to be careful about this. We are contacting different consultants to learn about specific groups, and our company has a variety of people with different beliefs. As for The Animals, if you play through the game you’ll see that they’re not mostly black people, it’s mixed.”

He told me that most of the city were mixed race, but the backstory for this particular area concerned most people being immigrants from Haiti. By itself, that would be fine. But near the end of the demo, we meet a white man in a suit and tie who gives us the information we need. He also tells us the Voodoo Boys are going to turn on us the moment we’ve done their dirty work – and is immediately proved right.

The violent black thugs betrayed us, as the corporate white man said they would. If CD Projeckt are trying to subvert expectations – if the punchline is, but sometimes the thugs are really thugs – then it’s not one that lands.

The blurb for the author, Matt Cox, lists his accomplishments as “He's played more games of Dota than you've had hot dinners.” Impressive. Whereas Pondsmith’s accomplishments include “Before (becoming) a pen and paper game designer...worked in the video game industry as a graphic designer” and worked with early titans of the gamin industry like Richard Garriot on early designs of the Original Ultima as well as designing the game Imperial Star in the early 1980s “purely for his own amusement.” In the first paragraph of the “Early Career” section of whis Wikipedia write up.

Slightly more impressive.

TL;DR It’s boomer vs. zoomer and the boomer dropped into the r/cyberpunk2077 subreddit to make a couple comments regarding what was said in the article.

Comments like “As for the Animals--the WHOLE FREAKING POINT is that they think of themselves as POWERFUL, DANGEROUS, WILD ANIMALS. You'd have thought the Lady named "Sasquatch" would have given them a clue. 3) The original Voodoo Boys were a scathing commentary on cultural appropriation. I LOVE the idea that real practicioners of Voudon moved in and took back their turf. And they even got the Creole right! 4) Who the (bleep) do YOU think you are to tell ME whether or not MY creation was done right or not?” and “Want to say this just once. I am really tired of well meaning people on internet chat boards paternalistically telling me what I, as a black person, should be offended by. You want to be my ally? Go gird up your loins and at this year's Thanksgiving dinner, have the nerve to tell your racist Uncle Bob to STFU for a change.”

Also he seems to have discovered and likes r/blackfellas after they made a post about him. Basically, it’s over for mayo wokecels. (Barring those who stop bitching about vidya and rage at their uncles instead.)

Nice write-up.

I used to think the internet was one the greatest things humankind had yet come up with, but now that I see what's being done with it, I starting to rethink my premise.

I'm looking forward to the increased censorship that I advocate. I wish it didn't have to be so, but things like this cement my certainty that the "common man" (or woman or anything inbetween) should not have access to such a powerful tool.

Strict population control and allocation of resources will prove necessary, especially as automation renders more and more jobs obsolete, otherwise there will be mass unrest leading to the collapse of civilization. Because the main issue is young children and "tweens", but the demarcation lines are blurry and I even advocate that the age of adulthood needs to be raised to about 25 today in modern so called progressive countries. And even then there are plenty of people in their late 20's, 30's and older who are still mentally and intellectually children.

I didn't say that is was a final solution, or the only solution. Yes I know that plenty of people make complete asses out of themselves publicly and non-anonymously, but a blanket rule that removes all the loser fake accounts and anime avatars and anonymous posting will certainly improve the quality of discourse on the internet as a whole, even if it is not the only and complete fix to the problems.

God, thank you. I am a transgender person and I am also sick and tired of cisgender "allies" talking as if they speak for me or know what I'm going through or what is polite or offensive. The offense over the ad does come from some transgender voices. But a really, really great part is also from cisgender people who are speaking out of turn. If you look at the response from places like r/asktransgender, it's very wide-ranging, from absolute disgust to indifference. It is certainly more nuanced than "it's transphobic", as most news outlets state as if it were a fact. I'm not offended by the "mix it up" ad at all. Did any of these news sites even think to look for perspectives such as mine? Likely not.

Of course a tr*nny has to come in and compare their mental health struggles to racism.
