I used to have a mentality that those who gave a shit about the trash that was game of thrones were a blight on society, but if it inspires otherwise good people to appreciate the Wheel of Time or Lord of the Rings, then I guess I really should respect what HBO did.

I think it's a social thing. A big part of their love for the series is tied up with the social aspect provided by belonging to a fandom. They mourn the red wedding together, hate Joffrey together, and get super assblasted about the show going to shit together. Everything is amplified because they're doing it as a group.
