I was the victim of a hate crime in 2015. A woman assaulted me because according to her I was an "illegal Mexican" and "trump was going to order the army to shoot all illegal Mexicans in the head". I am not an illegal Mexican btw. I am Colombian and American. I do have an accent tho (that was what triggered the assault). Then she proceeded to call the cops on me and my black husband for "trespassing" which we were not. I am just mentioning this to make the point that for a lot of people symbols of hate are just that. For minorities it means that person might assault us or kill us for not being white.
We don't have the luxury of the abstract because those symbols represent hate against us. I understand that for some people (specially white) a symbol may represent just trolling or shit posting. I can tell you to me a Trump flag (the woman who assaulted me mentioned Trump) represents the person who committed a hate crime against me. I don't have the luxury of the abstract. To me is very real. The PTSD is real; the depression is real. If I see that symbol I get really upset particularly because when the cops came (due to her lies) the only person they seemed to be interested on was my husband (who is black). We had to fight with the DA just for the woman who assaulted me and lied to the cops to get charges.

I was the victim of a hate crime in 2015. A woman assaulted me because according to her I was an "illegal Mexican" and "trump was going to order the army to shoot all illegal Mexicans in the head". I am not an illegal Mexican btw. I am Colombian and American. I do have an accent tho (that was what triggered the assault). Then she proceeded to call the cops on me and my black husband for "trespassing" which we were not. I am just mentioning this to make the point that for a lot of people symbols of hate are just that. For minorities it means that person might assault us or kill us for not being white. We don't have the luxury of the abstract because those symbols represent hate against us. I understand that for some people (specially white) a symbol may represent just trolling or shit posting. I can tell you to me a Trump flag (the woman who assaulted me mentioned Trump) represents the person who committed a hate crime against me. I don't have the luxury of the abstract. To me is very real. The PTSD is real; the depression is real. If I see that symbol I get really upset particularly because when the cops came (due to her lies) the only person they seemed to be interested on was my husband (who is black). We had to fight with the DA just for the woman who assaulted me and lied to the cops to get charges. Same way how most African Americans cringe when they see a confederate flag.
If Chris Pratt did not know that, meh ok, Whatever. If he knew... well too bad. I will exercise my freedom of association and my freedom not to go and see his movies and cancel him. I know for a lot of people is just a shirt. For people like me is a reminder that you can be on a public place and someone can attack you or kill you because of the color of your skin. The symbol has been used by the marines for such a long time and its meaning and purpose has absolutely no connection whatsoever to white supremacy. The confederate flag and the swastika have a long history of being associated with racists and radical extremists unlike the Gadsden flag.
Chris Pratt is the average conservative guy that likes hunting and going to church. When you look at American history, you have to see how amazing it is, even the bad. We literally went from being just Puritan colonies, to defeating England, to having a civil war and taking down slavery (although it was a slow transition), two world wars, major civil Rights movement, and going into a 10 year war all in 243 years. I mean holy shit the US crammed all that in 243. That's something to be proud of, and when you think about symbols like "don't tread on me" it should appeal to everyone. I mean I'm an Orthodox Christian now but what difference does that make? I'm still brown and I still get wary of certain places. Like yesterday I was at the gun range, the guys in the range were all white. The guy who rung me up at the front was an older white guy with a Tom Selleck moustache. I being the good mannered guy I am was nothing but " yes sir, no sir," and at some point I was shaking a bit because I was so worried that these guys would treat me badly or with super caution but no. They were all super nice and helpful, infact when I was getting targets there was a 4 targets for 5 dollars thing going on I pulled out like 5 or 6 by mistake and was about to take it back and he said no you're good you got 4. The range officer, after I somehow shot the binder clip on the target, was joking around with me and gave me a new clip. We were both laughing at how I managed to suck that much. These far left people don't seem to go outside at all and meet people that they think is racist or facists. No matter who you are the way to fight prejudice is to understand how similar you are to someone whom you have prejudice against.
