Anyway, Rammstein play heavy metal, they have a bit of a leather daddy image, they’re from Germany, they sing almost exclusively auf Deutsch, and Till Lindemann looks like the guy you stay away from in prison, so American MDEgenerates who can’t understand German have long assumed that the authors of “Links-zwo-drei-vier” are /theirband/. Likewise, liberal music journalists occasionally accuse Rammstein of using fascist imagery. Also, ya know, Columbine. The Nazi rumors have been going on for years, even though:

On the note of other good songs, I was really sad to hear that they've taken "Sex" out of their live lineup. It's not a conventional Rammstein song, but it's really good nonetheless. I won't ever really understand why people who have never had a German language class, or enough classes to have a passing familiarity with the language and recent culture and history, can actually be fans of Rammstein. Those people have zero chance of getting any of the more interesting lyrical/language tricks and historical/cultural/literary references; not to mention completely misconstruing meanings of songs.

Rammstein are one of those artists who managed to be both brilliant and popular, but became popular for reasons that have very little to do with their brilliance. They were respected but not enormous in Germany, but then in the late 90s/early 2000/ they got absolutely huge in the USA thanks to David Lynch, Jonathan Davis, and even Vin Diesel promoting them. They became the face of German rock in the USA, so now any American who likes heavier music and has any interest at all in Germany will naturally flock to Rammstein. And of course, a lot of Americans who are “interested in Germany” are wehraboos who’re one rejection away from going full Pepe.

If a German likes Rammstein, I assume that he’s smart and enjoys their wordplay. If an American likes Rammstein, my first impression is almost the opposite at this point.
